GLC determination of warfarin in human plasma

A specific and quantitative GLC method for warfarin in human plasma is described. The procedure uses papaverine as the internal standard and involves a dichloroethane extraction of the acidified specimen. The organic extract is evaporated, and the evaporated extract is dissolved in 50 microliter of chloroform. Aliquots of 2-3 microliter are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame-ionization detector. The sensitivity of the method is such that 0.3 microgram of intact warfarin can be detected in 1 ml of plasma. Statistical analyses indicate a recovery of 97.26 +/- 1.89% SD. The procedure was successfully applied to plasma drug level studies in humans.     

The vestibular aqueduct in congenital deafness: evaluation by the axial projection

Thirty-two patients with congenital neurosensory hearing loss demonstrated dilatation of the peripheral limb of the vestibular aqueduct as visualized on pluridirectional tomograms. Multiple additional anomalies involving most frequently the cochlea (15 patients) but also the ossicles (three patients) or vestibule (one patient) were associated. The axial-pyramidal (Poschl) projection was of great value in evaluation of the vestibular aqueduct and cochlea. The technique, clinical correlation, and surgical implications are discussed.     

Peritoneal tuberculosis imitating ovarian carcinoma "special category"

A case report, of a patient with peritoneal tuberculosis in whom the provisional diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma--"special category" was made is presented. As most gynecologists see hardly any cases of peritoneal tuberculosis nowadays, this possible diagnosis--which should always be considered--is reviewed. It illustrates the importance of a definite histopathological diagnosis.     

An/micr-Ophthalmia, Cleft Lip/Palate, and Short Limbs: A New Syndrome Simulating a Short Rib Syndrome

We report on a male infant born at 38 weeks of gestation with hydrocephalus, right anophthalmia, left microphthalmia, cleft palate, midline cleft of lip, and microphallus. Autopsy showed pulmonary bronchial lymphangiectasia, hepatic periportal fibrosis, adrenal agenesis, ventricular septal defect, aortic stenosis, and undescended testes. The radiographic findings include short limbs and mild shortness of ribs. Karyotype with high-resolution banding was normal (46,XY). The combination of anomalies in this case could suggest a ciliopathy and may represent a new entity similar to that described by Cideciyan et al. [ 1 ].
