OBJECTIVES: The imbalance in oxidative status together with nutrition depletion and low body weight play a vital role in the pathogenesis and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study was undertaken to ascertain if a relationship existed between oxidative status and BMI in COPD. In addition, association of oxidative status and BMI with lung function of the disease was also examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 202 COPD patients and 136 healthy controls plasma lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) activities, BMI and FEV(1)% predicted were looked for interactions. RESULTS: The patients had increased LPO (p=0.006) and decreased antioxidants (GSH, p=0.005; GPx, p=0.035 and CAT, p=0.008, respectively). Of note are the correlations of oxidative stress markers with BMI and FEV(1)% predicted in the patients. LPO inversely and GSH, GPx, and CAT positively correlated with both BMI (p=0.007, p<0.001, p=0.045 and p=0.009, respectively), and FEV(1)% of predicted (LPO, p=0.001; GSH, p<0.001; GPx, p=0.043 and CAT, p<0.001) in the patients. Further, a positive correlation existed between BMI and FEV(1)% predicted (p=0.016) in COPD. CONCLUSION: The intimate relationship of oxidative status with BMI and lung function, and the direct correlation between BMI and FEV(1) may potentiate severity of the disease. 相似文献

Primary infections caused by Toxoplasma gondii, rubella and cytomegalovirus (CMV) can lead to serious complications in pregnant women. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma, rubella and CMV infections through antenatal screening. In this study, the consecutive records of 1652 pregnant women examined between the period March 2004 to January 2006 were included. The results of the antenatal screening for Toxoplasma, rubella and CMV during the first trimester of pregnancy were evaluated. Anti-Toxoplasma, anti-rubella and anti-CMV IgG and IgM antibodies were assayed using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method. Of the 1652 pregnant women tested, anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibody was found in 860 (52.1%) of the cases, while 9 (0.54%) of the subjects tested positive for anti-Toxoplasma IgM. Anti-rubella IgG and IgM antibodies were reactive in 1570 (95.0%), and in 9 (0.54%) of the tested women, respectively. Moreover, 1568 (94.9%) of them were found to be positive for anti-CMV IgG, while 7 (0.4%) tested positive for anti-CMV IgM. Consequently, because of the high seropositivity of T. gondii, rubella and CMV in the pregnant women, the country's health authorities should be alerted, and preventive measures should be taken. 相似文献

In the past several decades, marine organisms have generouslygifted to the pharmaceutical industries numerous naturallybioactive compounds with antiviral, antibacterial,antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancerpotentials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of the anaerobic intestinal spirochetes Brachyspira aalborgi and Brachyspira pilosicoli in the feces of captive nonhuman primates (n = 35) from 19 species housed at the Zoological Gardens, Perth, Western Australia. Both spirochete species are known to infect human beings. DNA was extracted from freshly collected feces with a commercially available QIAamp DNA stool minikit and subjected to PCR protocols amplifying portions of the 16S rRNA genes of the two spirochete species. The feces were also subjected to selective culture for the spirochetes. Subsequently, feces from 62 other captive animals or birds representing 39 species at the zoo were examined by PCR to determine whether they were reservoirs of infection. Six fecal samples from individuals from four primate species (two vervet monkeys, two Tonkean macaques, one Japanese macaque, and one hamadryas baboon) tested positive in the B. aalborgi PCR. B. aalborgi was not detected by PCR in any of the other animal or bird species tested, and B. pilosicoli was not detected in the primates or any of the other animals or birds. B. aalborgi was isolated from both PCR-positive vervet monkeys. This is the first time that B. aalborgi has been isolated from nonhuman primates and the first time that it has been isolated from the feces of any species. 相似文献

Abstract In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of a combination of liposomal amphotericin B (Lip-Amp B) and Methylglyoxal (Lip-MG) against Candida albicans in the leukopoenic mice. The antifungal efficacy of Lip-Amp B or Lip-MG or a combination of Lip-Amp B and Lip-MG was evaluated by the analysis of the survival rate and the fungal load in the treated mice. The immune-stimulatory effect of Lip-MG on macrophages was evaluated by analysing the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. C. albicans infected mice treated at the doses of 1 and 2?mg/kg of Lip-Amp B showed 20% and 50% survival rates, respectively. Whereas the mice treated with free Amp B at the same doses died within 40?days of treatment. Interestingly, C. albicans infected mice treated with a combination of Lip-Amp B and Lip-MG had 70% survival rate on day 40 postinfection. Moreover, treatment of macrophages with Lip-MG increased their fungicidal activity and the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and IL-1β. These findings suggested that co-treatment with Lip-Amp B and Lip-MG had a synergistic effect and could be effective against C. albicans in immunocompromised subjects. 相似文献

Nasal polyps are benign mucosal protrusions that expand into the nasal cavity. There are no any etiological factors that may explain the pathogenesis of nasal polyps but currently inflammation continues to be the major factor. As a result of inflammation, neutrophils become activated and migrate to the inflammatory area and form their bactericidal effects by producing free oxygen radicals. Effects of balneotherapy on gait properties of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were investigated prospectively. A
total of 30 patients with knee osteoarthritis received balneotherapy consisting of two daily thermomineral water baths for
2 weeks. Patients were evaluated using gait analysis and clinical scores, both within 2 weeks, before and after spa treatment.
Patients were walking faster in their control analyses (0.81 ± 0.21 to 0.89 ± 0.19 m/s; P = 0.017), with a shorter mean stance time (63.0 ± 3.3 to 61.8 ± 2.5% stride; P = 0.007), an increased cadence (96 ± 13.1 to 100 ± 11.9 steps/min; P = 0.094) and stride length (996 ± 174 to 1,058 ± 142 mm; P = 0.017). Balneotherapy also resulted in a significant decrease in Lequesne knee osteoarthritis index (12.1 ± 3.7 to 10.0 ± 3.3
points; P = 0.003), VAS for pain (58 ± 25 to 33 ± 15; P = 0.0001), VAS for patients’ (56 ± 24 to 29 ± 19; P < 0.001) and investigator’s global assessment (55 ± 20 to 26 ± 15; P < 0.0001) and WOMAC score (2.1 ± 0.7 to 1.6 ± 0.8; P = 0.0004). The marine-derived cembranoid sarcophine (1) and its sulfur-containing semisynthetic derivatives (2–6) were evaluated for anticancer potential using cell cycle progression markers. No effect on MCF-7 cell viability or apoptosis
was seen with these derivatives at concentrations of up to 100 μM after 72 h of incubation. At 100 μM, sarcophine and its
derivatives 2–5 arrested the MCF-7 cells in G0/G1 phase, with concomitant decrease in the cell populations at S and G2+M phases. MDA-MB-231
cells were not responsive to any of the derivatives. Our preliminary results suggest that the sulfur-containing derivatives
