TGF-beta suppresses tumor progression in colon cancer by inhibition of IL-6 trans-signaling

Alterations of TGF-beta signaling have been described in colorectal cancer, although the molecular consequences are largely unknown. By using transgenic mice overexpressing TGF-beta or a dominant-negative TGF-betaRII, we demonstrate that TGF-beta signaling in tumor infiltrating T lymphocytes controls the growth of dysplastic epithelial cells in experimental colorectal cancer, as determined by histology and a novel system for high-resolution chromoendoscopy. At the molecular level, TGF-beta signaling in T cells regulated STAT-3 activation in tumor cells via IL-6. IL-6 signaling required tumor cell-derived soluble IL-6R rather than membrane bound IL-6R and suppression of such TGF-beta-dependent IL-6 trans-signaling prevented tumor progression in vivo. Taken together, our data provide novel insights into TGF-beta signaling in colorectal cancer and suggest novel therapeutic approaches for colorectal cancer based on inhibition of TGF-beta-dependent IL-6 trans-signaling.     

The cytological indices and electrokinetic mobility of the cell nuclei of the buccal epithelium in assessing periodontal status]

Study of electrokinetic mobility of buccal epitheliocyte nuclei, nonspecific resistance of buccal mucosa cells, and cytograms of patients with periodontitis of different severity revealed a clear-cut correlation between these parameters and severity of clinical picture of periodontal inflammation. Morphological and cytological studies of buccal epithelial cells are proposed to be used for assessing the severity of periodontal inflammation and the efficacy of therapy.     

Early Experimental Studies on Hemoperfusion as a Treatment Modality for Acute Radiation Disease

Abstract: First results of the studies on hemoperfusion therapy of acute radiation disease that were conducted in Kiev in 1976 are presented. In these studies, 69 mongrel dogs were exposed to irradiation at a dose of 525 rad (5.25 Gy). It was proved that hemoperfusion through uncoated synthetic activated carbons led to a noticeable increase in their survival rate, from 3.2% in the control group (n = 31) to 68.4% and 62.4% for the dogs that received extracorporeal treatment at 2 h (n = 19) and 24 h (n =-19) after irradiation, respectively.     

A comparison of the hormonal and etholotropic activity of luliberin and its analogs

The paper is devoted to comparative analysis of the activity of peptides (LH-RH analogs) with relation to their action on ovulation as well as on the learning capabilities and their effect on immobilization stress in rats. The acceleration of learning processes and elimination of immobilization stress were shown to be caused by LH-RH and its analogs, regulating actively ovulation under experimental conditions. The comparative evaluation of their action has shown that LH-RH analogs-antagonists produce a more marked effect on the process of learning and elimination of stress consequences than its analogs-agonists.     

Antioxidant activity and flavonoid composition of the new nootropic preparation polynoophyt

The antioxidant activity of the new nootropic preparation polynoophyt has been experimentally studied on a model of hypobaric hypoxia in animals.
