Factors that are known to influence plasmid transfer in bacterial populations were studied for the conjugative plasmid pWG613, which determined gentamicin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. The transfer frequency was largely unaffected over a wide range of temperature (18-42 degrees C); pH also had little effect on the transfer frequency in the range 5.0-8.5. High cell density and log phase cultures were required for optimal plasmid transfer, as were donor:recipient ratios of 0.003-3.3. 相似文献

Unique X-linked mental retardation syndrome with fingertip arches and contractures linked to Xq21.31 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We studied 10 members of a 4 generation Missouri kindred with a dominant mental retardation syndrome with increasing severity in males. The 21 year-old propositus presented with severe mental retardation, microcephaly, asymmetric face, exotropia, hypogonadism, joint hypermobility, rocker bottom feet, and 10 low digital arches. Two brothers and a male cousin had similar features. The mother, sister, niece, maternal aunt, female cousin, and grandmother were examined and each had 8 to 10 low digital arches. Five of the women had exotropia and one had pes cavus feet. Chromosome analysis for fragile X in multiple relatives was normal. To determine the likelihood that this was an X-linked syndrome. DNA from relatives was hybridized to probes which detect 13 different loci spanning the X-chromosome. A peak LOD score of 2.78 at theta equal to 0.0 was calculated for the syndrome locus and DXYS1 (pDP34). The more distal Xq loci showed increasing recombination with the syndrome locus. These results are consistent with location for this syndrome near Xq21.31, the chromosomal locus for DXYSI. 相似文献

Horner syndrome is an uncommon but important clinical entity, representing interruption of the sympathetic pathway to the eye and face. Horner syndrome is almost always diagnosed clinically, though pharmacological testing can be used to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging modalities such as PET, CT and MRI are important components of work‐up for patients presenting with acquired Horner syndrome. Our patient’s presentation with Horner syndrome unmasked the causative superior sulcus squamous cell carcinoma and a coincidental lower lobe adenocarcinoma. Successful radical treatment of these cancers resulted in complete resolution of the syndrome and disease‐free survival at 18 months. We review the anatomy and pathophysiology underlying this and other causes of Horner syndrome. 相似文献

Vasospasm of the vertebrobasilar system was induced in seven dogs by the intracisternal injection of autologous blood. Somatosensory and brain stem auditory evoked potentials were recorded before and after the induction of angiographically confirmed vasospasm. Additionally, somatosensory evoked potentials were monitored during graded hypotension to 40 mm Hg. There was no significant alteration in the evoked potentials by vasospasm or hypotension. Detailed clinical examination and postmortem histopathological studies did not demonstrate any focal neurological deficit or infarction attributable to vasospasm. Previous studies have noted close correlations between decreased cerebral blood flow and evoked potential alterations. Induced hypotension to a mean arterial pressure of 40 mm Hg in the presence of documented vasospasm was not sufficient to cause evoked potential changes, focal neurological deficit, or pathological evidence of infarction in the canine model. 相似文献

Glu-plasminogen binds to platelets; the monocytoid line, U937, and the human fetal fibroblast line, GM1380 bind both plasminogen and its activator, urokinase. This study assesses the interaction of these fibrinolytic proteins with circulating human blood cells. Plasminogen bound minimally to red cells but bound saturably and reversibly to monocytes, granulocytes and lymphocytes with apparent Kd values of 0.9-1.4 microM. The interactions were of high capacity with 1.6 to 49 X 10(5) sites/cell and involved the lysine binding sites of plasminogen. Both T cells and non-rosetting lymphocytes and two B cell lines saturably bound plasminogen. Urokinase bound saturably to granulocytes, monocytes, non-rosetting lymphocytes and a B cell line, but minimally to T cells, platelets and red cells. Therefore, plasminogen binding sites of high capacity, of similar affinities, and with common recognition specificities are expressed by many peripheral blood cells. Urokinase receptors are also widely distributed, but less so than plasminogen binding sites. The binding of plasminogen and/or urokinase to these cells may lead to generation of cell-associated proteolytic activity which contributes to a variety of cellular functions. 相似文献

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This article reviews current concepts of the innate immune system that offers protection against infections. It offers an overview for the readers to understand how innate immunity, consisting of different receptors, cells, and mediators recognizes pathogens and exerts protective function against pathogens. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: MEDLINE-search articles including original research papers, review articles, textbooks, and references identified from bibliographies of relevant articles. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The innate immune system is nonspecific immunity present since birth not requiring repeated exposure to pathogens. It is capable of differentiation between self and nonself. Because of its nonspecificity, it has a broad spectrum of resistance to infection. Further, it is thought to play an important role in the control of adaptive immunity by regulating co-stimulatory molecules and effector cytokines. Innate immunity includes pattern recognition molecules/receptors, antimicrobial peptides, the complement system, inflammatory mediators, and cytokines produced by immune cells. Pattern recognition molecules/receptors recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns that are essential for microorganisms' survival and pathogenicity. Although innate immunity has recently gained increasing importance, further studies are necessary for a better understanding of its role. 相似文献
