Establishment of a map of neurons in the brain of Eisenia fetida (Annelida, Oligochaeta) containing substances immunologically specific to vertebrate peptides

Several antisera specific to neuropeptides of vertebrates were applied to sections of the earthworm Eisenia fetida Sav. Some of them were able to reveal specific neurones of the supraoesophageal ganglion: h-GHRF, CRF, Leu- and Met-enkephalin, dynorphin, substance P, CCK-8, and CCK-8S. A map of different areas or nuclei was established in the brain, taking position of reactive cells into account. Four symmetrically paired nuclei and one mediodorsal nucleus were identified and plotted. There is generally no characteristic modification correlated with maturation of the worms. However, the reaction against anti-Leu-enkephalin differs significantly according to age of Eisenia in nucleus No. 1 and particularly in nuclei No. 2 where one cell group presents specific reactivity on and after puberty. Moreover, the successive application of two antisera to the same sections after elution showed no coexistence of substances in a single neurone. By comparison with these vertebrate peptide-like containing nerve cells, the assay to anti-5-HT showed only a few reactive aminergic neurones. An attempt of correlation of cellular types with reactive perikarya is started.     

The ejaculatory behavior of sexually sluggish male rats treated with (-)deprenyl, apomorphine, bromocriptine and amphetamine

Bromocriptine (0.5 mg/kg) and apomorphine (0.03 mg/kg) exert moderate aphrodisiac effect in sexually sluggish rats. This effect appears rapidly and reaches its peak within 24 h. Amphetamine (2 mg/kg) acts similarly but with a more rapid onset and offset of the effect. A single dose of (-)deprenyl, a selective inhibitor of MAO-B, exerts a much more potent effect in this test.     

Melatonin modifies the spontaneous multiunit activity recorded in several brain nuclei of freely behaving rats.

Melatonin, a pineal hormone, released photoperiodically, was administered systemically in rats, previously implanted with semimicroelectrodes into six different brain structures. The multiunit electrical activity of these structures was recorded for 10 min before and 60 min after melatonin administration in unanesthetized, freely moving rats. Different melatonin doses (100, 200, 500, and 1000 micrograms/kg) produced changes in the electrical activity of all tested structures. However, amygdala, rostral hypothalamus and mesencephalic reticular formation showed the most important changes. The main effect induced by melatonin was a dose-related decrease of the spontaneous electrical activity. The significance of these effects is discussed within the context of the behavioral and endocrinological effects of melatonin.     

Donor interleukin-4 promoter gene polymorphism influences allograft rejection after heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) is secreted mainly by activated T lymphocytes and characterizes the T-helper 2 (Th2) sub-type. In transplantation Th2 cells are believed to induce graft tolerance. Previous studies revealed that patients with a relatively high frequency of IL-4 producing helper T lymphocytes (HTL) before heart transplantation (HTX) had no or less rejection episodes compared with patients with a low frequency of IL-4 producing HTL. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified in the promoter region of the IL-4 gene, which influence promoter strength. We investigated whether there was a correlation between SNP genotypes in the IL-4 promoter and heart failure, and rejection after HTX. METHODS: Seventy HTX patients, 61 donors, and 36 controls were genotyped for the 3 SNPs by sequencing. RESULTS: Of the SNPs at -285 and -81, only the C and A alleles, respectively, were found in this study. Both alleles were found for the -590 SNP. No relation between patient genotype of the SNP at -590 and heart failure and rejection was found. However, incidence of rejection was significantly lower in patients that received a donor heart with the T-positive genotype compared with patients that received a heart from a T-negative donor. Patients who had the T-negative genotype and received a heart from a T-positive donor, suffered significantly less from rejection than T-negative patients that received a T-negative donor heart. This was not significant in the T-positive patient group. CONCLUSIONS: This indicates that IL-4 production within the donor heart and by cells from the donor is important for reducing incidence of episodes of rejection.     

Occupation and bladder cancer in Spain: a multi-centre case-control study

A case-control study on bladder cancer was carried out in four regions of Spain. The study included 497 cases (438 males and 59 females), 583 hospital controls and 530 population controls matched by sex, age and residence. The present paper reports the results of the analyses on occupational history. Among men, an increased risk of bladder cancer was found for textile workers (OR = 1.97, 95% CL 1.2-3.3), mechanics and maintenance workers (OR = 1.86, 95% CL 1.2-2.8), workers in the printing industry (OR = 2.06, 95% CL 1.0-4.3) and for managers (OR = 2.03, 95% CL 1.2-3.5). The risk was highest among those first employed in the textile industry before the age of 25 and prior to 1960. Among mechanics the risk was highest for those who started after the age of 25 and later than 1960. The OR for smokers who had also been employed in one of the high risk occupations was 7.82 (95% CL 4.4-14.0) which is compatible with a multiplicative effect of joint exposure to tobacco and occupational hazards.     

Effect of ischaemia on somatosensory evoked potentials in diabetic patients.

The nerve action potential at the elbow and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) at the scalp were recorded over 30 minutes of tourniquet-induced limb ischaemia in 10 diabetic patients and 10 controls. According to the SEP changes, an increased resistance to nerve ischaemia in diabetic patients was observed. The pathways involved in SEP conduction are discussed.     

Experimental arthritis induced by a clinical Mycoplasma fermentans isolate

Background  

Mycoplasma fermentans has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, it was detected in the joints and blood of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but it is not clear yet how the bacteria enter the body and reach the joints. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of M. fermentans to induce experimental arthritis in rabbits following inoculation of the bacteria in the trachea and knee joints.
