Electrocardiographic Monitoring During Coloscopy

Electrocardiographic abnormalities were observed in 15 of 23 patients (65%), five with known heart disease, who were monitored for one hour prior to, during and for one hour after coloscopy. In one patient, ischemic S-T depression, 2 mm. below the resting level, persisted during the one hour following coloscopy. In all other patients, the electrocardiographic abnormalities disappeared before the end of the monitoring period.     

FEMORAL-HEAD HEIGHT LOSS: A STUDY OF THE RELATIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF SOME OF ITS DETERMINANTS IN HIP DEGENERATION

In an attempt to determine the relative significance of possibledeterminants of bone destruction in degenerative hip disease,eighty-nine patients coming to total hip replacement were studiedprospectively. The degree of femoral-head height loss was comparedwith the configuration of the joint, the patient's age, weightand sex, the pre-operative dose of indomethacin and phenylbutazone,and his habitual alcohol intake. In patients with congruous degenerate joints there was a strikingcorrelation between femoral-head height loss and the patient'sweight. This relationship was not seen in patients with shallowacetabula and lateral femoral head subluxation, nor in patientswith protrusio acetabuli. None of the other possible determinants was found to be relatedto femoral-head height loss. ^*Present address: Guy's Hospital, London SEI 9RT.     

Dendritic Cell Numbers in the Blood of HIV-1 Infected Patients Before and After Changes in Antiretroviral Therapy

Antigen presenting dendritic cells (DCs) can serve as sites for HIV replication and as vehicles for transmission of the virus to T cells. It is known that the numbers of DCs in blood is reduced during HIV-1 infection. Here we monitored the two major subsets of blood DCs in 12 individuals undergoing a change, primarily initiation, of highly active antiretroviral therapy. The numbers of plasmacytoid DCs were reliably higher on therapy, although in the 1–3 month interval we followed, these numbers did not return to those seen in HIV uninfected controls. An increase in plasmacytoid DCs was accompanied by an increase in IFN- production in response to a standard challenge in culture with UV-inactivated herpes simplex virus. The levels of myeloid DCs also demonstrated an increase while on HAART, and these numbers become comparable to the HIV uninfected controls. The numbers of plasmacytoid and myeloid DCs varied inversely with the levels of plasma HIV viremia. These longitudinal studies extend prior work showing that virus infection with HIV leads to a decrease in the number of dendritic cells in blood, and that this can be reversed at least in part by therapy.     

Erythropoiesis: Short Report: Translation of Analysis Results between Serum Ferritin Assays, Ferritin RIA AmershamTM and Abbott AxSYMTM Ferritin

The serum ferritin assays, Ferritin RIA Amersham(TM) and Abbott AxSYM(TM) Ferritin were compared in order to translate values from one assay to the other. Serum ferritin was analysed with both assays in 102 samples. Logarithmic transformation of the results was performed in order to stabilize the variance. The relationship between the untransformed values was most exactly expressed by a proportionality: AxSYM Ferritin = 0.873 * RIA Ferritin. Due to this proportionality, the numerical difference between the assays increases with the ferritin concentration, although the percentage difference between the assays remains constant.
