Synthesis and anti-microbial activity of benzo-condensed heterocyclic derivatives

The synthesis of 2,4-dione derivatives of 1,5-benzodithiepine, 1,5-benzodiazepine and 1,5-benzothiazepine and the anti-microbial activity in vitro of these derivatives and of analogous of 1,5-benzodioxepine, 1,5-benzoxathiepine and 1,5-benzoxazepine, previously prepared, are reported. Some of these compounds showed a good activity against some Gram positive microorganisms and blastomycetes.     

Booze on the box: The portrayal of alcohol on British television: a content analysis

The portrayal of alcohol was examined in a systematic sampleof 50 programmes broadcast on British television. Four out offive programmes contained visual or verbal references to alcohol.On average, there was a reference to alcohol in every 6 minutesof programming. The programmes showed more alcohol being consumedthan soft drinks or beverages, but there were few referencesto the hazards of alcohol consumption. The main recommendationis that television companies should accept a responsibilityfor presenting a more realistic and healthier approach to theuse of alcohol in Britain

Personal history,training, and worksite as predictors of back pain of nurses

Back pain among nurses is a common problem. Prior studies of this problem have been based on cross-sectional or retrospective data. This 18-month prospective study involving nurses newly graduated from nursing school investigated personal, worksite, and training factors associated with future risk of back pain. Each nurse underwent a preliminary interview and periodic follow-ups to identify those with back injuries. Contingency tables and logistic regression analyses demonstrated that prior significant back pain episodes (evidenced by previous job changes because of back pain, frequent medication use, etc.) were associated with increased future risk. Training at nursing school or on the job did not have a protective effect. This pilot study therefore suggests factors useful in placement and counseling of new nurses and indicates the need for further implementation of mechanical lift assist device use. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     

Hand hygiene and glove use behavior in an Italian hospital.

In an Italian hospital, we observed that hand hygiene was performed in 638 (19.6%) of 3,253 opportunities, whereas gloves were worn in 538 (44.2%) 1,218 of opportunities. We observed an inverse correlation between the intensity of care and the rate of hand hygiene compliance (R2=0.057; P<.001), but no such association was observed for the rate of glove use compliance (R2=0.014; P=.078). Rates of compliance with hand hygiene and glove use recommendations follow different behavioral patterns.     

Correspondence between theoretical models and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements of femoral cross-sectional growth during adolescence

We have developed an analytical model of long bone cross-sectional ontogeny in which appositional growth of the diaphysis is primarily driven by mechanical stimuli associated with increasing body mass during growth and development. In this study, our goal was to compare theoretical predictions of femoral diaphyseal structure from this model with measurements of femoral bone mineral and geometry by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Measurements of mid-diaphyseal femoral geometry and structure were made previously in 101 Caucasian adolescents and young adults 9–26 years of age. The data on measured bone mineral content and calculated section modulus were compared with the results of our analytical model of cross-sectional development of the human femur over the same age range. Both bone mineral content and section modulus showed good correspondence with experimental measurements when the relationships with age and body mass were examined. Strong linear relationships were evident for both parameters when examined as a function of body mass.     

Immunostaining for P-glycoprotein in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinomas.

The morphologic distinction between thyroid carcinoma and certain benign thyroid conditions can be difficult in selected cases. P-glycoprotein (Pgp), a glycoprotein associated with tumor multidrug resistance, has been reported to be expressed in thyroid carcinoma but not in benign thyroid conditions. To determine the specificity of immunostaining for Pgp in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma, we studied formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 69 cases of various thyroid lesions using a commercially available monoclonal antibody to Pgp (C219, Centocor, Malvern, PA) and an avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Positive reactivity was seen in 15 of 37 (41%) benign thyroid conditions and in 23 of 32 (72%) thyroid carcinomas. We conclude that immunostaining for Pgp is not specific in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma.
