Effects of high temperature on the emergence and survival of adult Culex pipiens molestus and Culex quinquefasciatus in Japan.

The emergence rate and adult survival (longevity) of Japanese strains of Culex pipiens molestus and Culex quinquefasciatus were compared at temperatures of 21, 25, and 30 degrees C. The pupation and emergence rates in both strains were higher at 21 and 25 degrees C than at 30 degrees C. The adult emergence rate, especially in females, was lower in Cx. p. molestus than in Cx. quinquefasciatus. Longevity of females and males was lower in Cx. p. molestus at 25 degrees C and above. The survival of Cx. p. molestus was adversely affected by temperatures of 28 degrees C and higher. High temperature may restrict the distribution of this species. Therefore, if Cx. p. molestus infests the Okinawa region, the likelihood that it will become established is minimal.     

Basiparallel cut by pneumoencephalotomography and cerebellar atrophy

Summary The basiparallel cut is a nearly horizontal slice of the posterior fossa used in air study and the structures are observed on a plane parallel to the clivus. Total shrinkage of the cerebellum, with or without fourth ventricle dilatation, was found in cases of olivopontocerebellar atrophy, some intoxications, and a few senile subjects. Some atrophy of paleocerebellar portions was seen in Holmes-type degeneration. Another pattern was symmetric shrinkage of neocerebellar lobules and relatively specific for the cases of multiple system atrophy such as progressive supranuclear palsy, striatonigral degeneration, Marie's ataxia, etc. Loss of the superior cerebellar peduncle was clearly demonstrated in this view.     

Prevalence of nocturia among Japanese adults

The prevalence of nocturia among Japanese community-dwelling adults was associated with insomnia, taking into account other correlates of insomnia.     

Identification of Ki23819, a highly potent inhibitor of kinase activity of mutant FLT3 receptor tyrosine kinase.

Constitutively active internal tandem duplication (ITD) in the juxtamembrane domain of Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3), a type III receptor tyrosine kinase, is the most common molecular defect associated with acute myeloid leukemia. Its presence confers a poor outcome in patients with acute myeloid leukemia who receive conventional chemotherapy. FLT3-ITD has therefore been considered to be an attractive molecular target for a novel therapeutic modality. We describe here the identification and characterization of Ki23819 as a novel FLT3 inhibitor. Ki23819 suppressed proliferation and induced apoptosis of FLT3-ITD-expressing human leukemia cell lines. The growth-inhibitory effect of Ki23819 on MV4-11 cells was superior to that of SU11248, another FLT3 inhibitor (IC(50)<1 vs 3-10 nM). Ki23819 inhibited the autophosphorylation of FLT3-ITD more efficiently than that of wild-type FLT3. FLT3-ITD-dependent activation of the downstream signaling proteins ERK and STAT5 was also inhibited within similar concentration ranges. Thus, Ki23819 is a potent in vitro inhibitor of FLT3.     

Colorectal Cancer Screening Program in Songjiang district,Shanghai between 2015 and 2017: Evaluation of participation rate and the associated factor

Little is known about the participation rate of newly implemented colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs in China. Our goals were to identify factors associated with nonparticipation for CRC screening in Songjiang District, Shanghai.We analyzed individuals included in an observational cohort study from 4 towns (Xin Qiao, She Shan, Mao Gang, and Zhong Shan) in Songjiang District. The participation rate was calculated for the CRC screening program based on a fecal immunochemical test and a risk assessment questionnaire between 2015 and 2017 inclusive.Of the 27,130 individuals eligible for inclusion in this study, 20,863 (76.9%) participated in CRC screening at least once during 2015 and 2017. The factors linked with nonparticipation were; being male (odds ratio [OR] 0.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.82–0.93, P < .01), unmarried (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.64–0.80, P < .01), having a high education level (middle school, OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.74–0.90, P < .01, high school or above, OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.57–0.73, P < .01), absence of chronic disease (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.85–0.96, P < .01), and living in 2 out of the 4 towns covered (Xin Qiao, OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.66–0.78, P < .01, Zhong Shan, OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.26–0.31, P < .01).The current study revealed several associated factors with nonparticipation for the CRC screening in Songjiang district. These findings will help identify target populations that require an individualized approach to increase the participation rate.     

Type A alternating Wenckebach periodicity in the re-entrant path of ventricular extrasystoles

A patient with ventricular extrasystoles is reported in whom Type A alternating Wenckebach periodicity in the re-entrant path of the extrasystoles is suggested for the first time. Namely, it appears that 2:1 exit block occurs at a proximal level in the re-entrant path and block of the Wenckebach form occurs at a distal level in the path. The presence of three-level block in the re-entrant path is also suggested in this patient.     

Detection of Gyrovirus galga 1 in Cryopreserved Organs from Two Commercial Broiler Flocks in Japan

Gyrovirus galga 1 (GyVg1, previously recognized as avian gyrovirus 2), which was first reported in chicken in 2011, is a new member of the genus Gyrovirus. The presence of GyVg1 has also been confirmed in different regions of Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia, indicating its global distribution. However, because there are no reports of examining the distribution of GyVg1 in animals in Japan, the epidemiology of this virus is unknown. In this study, we attempted to retrospectively detect GyVg1 in cryopreserved chicken materials derived from different two commercial broiler flocks in 1997. The GyVg1 genome was detected in organ materials derived from both flocks by PCR. GyVg1 detected in both flocks was classified into four genetic groups by analyzing the nucleotide sequences of the detected PCR products. These results suggest that diverse GyVg1 strains were present in commercial chicken flocks as early as 1997 in Japan.     

Correlation of unilateral thoracoscopic lung volume reduction with improvement in lung function and exercise performance in patients with severe pulmonary emphysema

1 ), forced vital capacity, static compliance, and maximal oxygen uptake. The functional residual capacity as measured by the gas dilution method (FRC_gas), was unchanged; however, it was found to be decreased significantly when measured by body plethysmograph (FRC_box). Positive correlations existed between the reduction in FRC_box and the increase in FEV₁ (r = 0.586, P = 0.0042) and maximal oxygen uptake (r = 0.550, P = 0.018). Pulmonary ventilation and exercise ability in patients with pulmonary emphysema were improved in a volume-dependent manner by thoracoscopic lung volume reduction. These findings indicate that patients with a preoperative trapped gas volume level exceeding 1 l would be ideal candidates for thoracoscopic lung volume reduction. Diagnosis and treatment of nontraumatic dissecting aneurysm in the middle cerebral artery]

Two cases of nontraumatic dissecting aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) are reported. A 59-year-old woman presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage, mainly in the right sylvian fissure. On admission, the right carotid angiogram revealed a dissecting aneurysm with a double lumen extending from segment M1 to M2 of the right MCA, and an unruptured saccular aneurysm in the right internal carotid artery. Emergency surgery revealed a discolored protrusion of the arterial wall in the right MCA, which was thought to be the cause of her subarachnoid hemorrhage. The protrusion of the arterial wall was clipped and coated with Bemsheet soaked in Biobond. However, disturbance of consciousness persisted and she died of paralytic ileus two months after the operation. The other patient was a hypertensive 33-year-old woman with right hemiparesis and motor dysphasia. CT scans obtained on the day of admission showed no abnormalities. She was treated conservatively with clinical improvement, but CT scans obtained 3 days after the ictus revealed an infarction deep in the left frontal lobe. A left carotid angiogram was made 4 days after ictus and demonstrated severe stenosis of the proximal segment of the left MCA with poor filling of its superior trunk. Despite improvement of her hemiparesis, CT scans obtained 3 weeks after the ictus showed hemorrhagic infarction in the left frontal lobe. Repeat left carotid angiogram revealed a double lumen in the C1 and M1 portions with improvement of the previous severe stenosis of the M1. The 23 reported cases of DA in the MCA with our cases are reviewed and their neuroradiological and clinical features are discussed.
