Disruption of the early stages of information processing in limbic brain circuits may underlie symptoms of severe neuropsychiatric disorders. Prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle (PPI) is diminished in many of these disorders and may reflect the disruption of this CNS function. PPI is associated with brain activity in many of the same regions in humans as it is in laboratory animals, suggesting that neuroimaging studies in humans may help localize deficits that can then be elucidated in animal models. In this article, we employed a rapid presentation event-related design during continuous EPI BOLD scanning to examine hemodynamic response functions (HRFs) associated with PPI. Fourteen healthy participants listened to 100 pulse alone and 100 prepulse combined with pulse (prepulse-pulse) trials. PPI is the normalized difference in the startle response to the two trial types. Following the prepulse-pulse trials, the amplitudes of the HRFs in auditory cortices and in the anterior insula were increased, while in the cerebellum, thalamus and anterior cingulate, they were decreased, relative to the pulse alone trials. In addition, the timing of the prepulse-pulse responses was delayed in the auditory cortices, anterior insula and cerebellum. Finally, PPI measured outside the scanner was predicted by the difference in BOLD responses between trial types in the anterior insula and in the cerebellum. The results suggest that prepulse inhibition, and by extension early stages of information processing, modulate both the amplitude as well as timing of neural activity.  相似文献

Background: In the present study, we have evaluated the use of electron microscopy in subtyping pulmonary adenocarcinomas, comparing the ultrastructural findings with the diagnosis rendered by light microscopy. Materials and Methods: The gross and histologic features of 16 autopsy cases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma were analyzed and compared with electron microscopic features. The cytologic phenotypes of these cases of well-differentiated pulmonary adenocarcinoma were determined by electron microscopic examination. More than 200 cells in each case were examined, and the tumors were classified according to the predominant feature noted. Results: Eight cases were of Clara cell origin and one case each of type II pneumocyte and bronchial surface cell type. The remaining 6 cases lacked definite discernible features of differentiation towards any specific cell type, other than presence of small nuclear clefts in occasional nuclei. Tumors with Clara cell differentiation were low cuboidal with apical snouts. Type II pneumocyte tumor failed to reveal any characteristic definable as light microscopic feature. Conclusion: Ultrastructural examination is the only definite means of identification of various cell types in the respiratory epithelium and hence forms an invaluable tool in classification of pulmonary adenocarcinoma.  相似文献

Chitin and chitosan are biopolymers with excellent bioactive properties, such as biodegradability, non‐toxicity, biocompatibility, haemostatic activity and antimicrobial activity. A wide variety of biomedical applications for chitin and chitin derivatives have been reported, including wound‐healing applications. They are reported to promote rapid dermal regeneration and accelerate wound healing. A number of dressing materials based on chitin and chitosan have been developed for the treatment of wounds. Chitin and chitosan with beneficial intrinsic properties and high potential for wound healing are attractive biopolymers for wound management. This review presents an overview of properties, biomedical applications and the role of these biopolymers in wound care.  相似文献

Veno-occlusive disease of the liver is mostly encountered as a complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with myeloablative regimens with an incidence estimated to be 13.7%. It is clinically characterized by tender hepatomegaly, jaundice, weight gain and ascites. Strong clinical suspicion and an early recognition of clinical signs are essential to establish the diagnosis and institute effective regimen. Another complication of cytotoxic drugs given for cancers, is development of busulfan-induced lung injury. A strong index of suspicion is needed for its diagnosis, especially in setting where opportunistic fungal and viral infections manifest similarly. We illustrate the clinical and autopsy finings in a 2½-year-old boy who received autologous stem-cell transplantation following resection of stage IV neuroblastoma. He subsequently developed both hepatic veno-occlusive disease and busulfan-induced lung injury. The autopsy findings are remarkable for their rarity.  相似文献
