Nursing leaders' and nurses' view of health

This study is part of a scientific project, 'Multidimensional Health', the main goal of which is to introduce a broad view on health into health care and nursing The purpose of this study is to examine the view of health among nursing leaders and members of caring staff and to compare it to that of patients (a previous study in the project) The study is based on K Eriksson's theory of caring and its view of the human being with a body, soul and spirit, and health as a dynamic process concerning all aspects of human life An inquiry form with open questions that brought to the fore various aspects and dimensions of health was filled in by 20 nursing leaders and was used in interviewing 49 nurses According to the results many aspects of life are contained in the concept 'health' Health is above all an experience of well-being Ways of promoting one's health are described in terms of various 'healthy' living habits and preventive measures A supporting and humane attitude is hoped for in others There is unanimity that feelings affect health Belief may have a positive influence on health The meaning of life is connected with health Even suffering is part of health In interpreting the answers we assume three dimensions of health 'Health as behaviour' connects health with living in a healthy way 'Health as being' would mean a state of health and is characterized by a search for some kind of balance in one's inner state 'Health as becoming', growing towards health, means that a person becomes whole on a higher level of integration     

Balance and recovery from a perturbation are impaired in people with functional ankle instability.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if differences in balance and recovery would be found between controls and participants with unilateral or bilateral functional ankle instability (FAI). DESIGN: Cross-Sectional Study. SETTING: University laboratory and Community premises. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty healthy participants(C), 19 participants with unilateral FAI [both the uninjured (UC) and unstable ankle (UI) were included] and 22 participants with bilateral FAI (BI). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Balance was measured in single leg stance as: number of part foot lifts in 30 s; magnitude of medio-lateral ankle movement in two foot positions; and ability to balance on the ball of the foot. Recovery was determined by time to return to baseline medio-lateral ankle movement after a 15 degree inversion perturbation. RESULTS: The controls lifted the foot fewer times than the other three groups [C = 12.7 +/- 1.8 (mean +/- SE) foot lifts, UC = 22.9 +/- 2.5, UI = 25.1 +/- 2.3, and BI = 21.1 +/- 2.2, t-test, P = 0.006] and recovered significantly faster than the unstable ankles [C = 1.53 +/- 0.42 sec (median +/- SE), UI = 2.34 +/- 0.30 sec, BI = 2.15 +/- 0.70 sec, P < 0.02]. With FAI measured by the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool, the external control group balanced on demi-pointe better than both instability groups (P < 0.05), and recovered quicker than all groups. CONCLUSION: There are differences in balance and recovery between external controls and participants with both unilateral and bilateral FAI but not between the legs of participants with unilateral FAI.     

Becoming a mother — an analysis of women's experience of early motherhood

This paper presents the results of a qualitative study conducted by midwife researchers into women's experience of new motherhood. Data were collected using focus groups involving 55 first-time mothers and analysed using grounded theory method. The analysis produced six categories: 'realizing', 'unready', 'drained', 'aloneness', 'loss' and 'working it out'. The core category, 'becoming a mother', integrates all other categories and encapsulates the process of change experienced by women. Also explained are factors mediating the often distressing experience of becoming a mother. The analysis provides a conceptualization of early motherhood enabling the development of strategies for midwives, nurses and others helping women negotiate this challenge.     

Assessment of Women for Partner Abuse

Nearly 4 million women in the United States were physically hurt by their husbands or boyfriends in 1994. The health and well-being of these women and their children, as well as the women who are overlooked in these statistics, are jeopardized by past and current experiences with abuse within intimate relationships. Strategies for nurses in women's health care settings to screen women for current or past abuse within their intimate personal relationships, guidelines for effective responses to disclosure of abuse, and supportive interventions are described.
