Community family educators have the opportunity to incorporate childhood obesity prevention concepts in their programming with families of young children, but often lack formal health and nutrition education. The purpose of this feasibility study was to create an online training certificate program for community family educators and assess the program’s effectiveness at improving participant’s knowledge, attitudes, and intended and actual behaviors related to healthy lifestyles. Community family educators (n = 68) completed an online pretest, viewed 13 brief videos (8–15 min) focused on childhood obesity related topics and took mini-knowledge self-checks after each video followed by an online posttest. At posttest, paired t tests showed participants’ childhood obesity prevention related knowledge (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, screen time and sleep) improved significantly (p < 0.001). Participants’ attitudes toward parenting behaviors related to feeding practices, family meals, physical activity, screen time control and parent modeling significantly (p < 0.05) improved. Improvements also were seen in participants’ intentions to promote obesity prevention behaviors (i.e., age appropriate portions sizes, adequate physically active, and parental role modeling). Furthermore, changes in personal health behaviors at posttest revealed participants had significantly (p < 0.05) greater dietary restraint, improvements in sleep quality, and reductions of use of electronic devices during meals and snacks. Overall, participants were very satisfied with the training program, felt comfortable with skills acquired, and enjoyed the program. Findings suggest this online training program is a feasible and effective method for improving community family educators’ knowledge, attitudes, and intentions for obesity-prevention related parenting practices.  相似文献

Persistent cloaca is a rare urogenital anomaly that can pose significant challenges for adequate diagnosis and management. We describe the case of an infant girl with a cloacal malformation, having a single perineal orifice and an accessory phallic urethra, who presented with ambiguous genitalia at birth. The distal part of the accessory phallic urethra was used to create a mucosa-lined vestibule as a part of the total urogenital sinus mobilization. This technical maneuver allowed a more natural looking, and possibly functioning, vaginal introitus, improving the final cosmetic result.  相似文献

2-Deoxy-d-glucose (2DG), a glucose analog that transiently inhibits glycolysis, has anticonvulsant and antiepileptic disease-modifying properties in experimental in vivo models of seizures and epilepsy. Here we evaluated the effects of 2DG across the range of doses (50-500mg/kg i.p.) shown previously to exert anticonvulsant and antiepileptic effects in rats, on spatial learning and memory using the Morris water maze and on exploratory behavior using the open field test. For water maze testing, both acute and chronic protocols were tested. For acute testing, 2DG was injected for 15min prior to the water maze trial only on testing days. For chronic testing, 2DG was injected daily for 14days before water maze testing began. Neither protocol altered the latency to platform acquisition or retention of platform location by the probe test. For open field testing, 2DG was given at doses of 50-250mg/kg 15 or 30min prior to testing on each testing day. When given 30min prior to testing, exploratory activity in the open field was transiently and reversibly decreased by 2DG at doses of 250mg/kg/day but there were no effects on open field activity at 50mg/kg/day. When given 15min prior to testing, 2DG decreased exploratory activity in a dose-dependent fashion at both 50 and 250mg/kg. There were no toxic effects of 2DG at doses of 500mg/kg/day on body weight or general health. In summary, 2DG is well tolerated at doses associated with anticonvulsant and antiepileptic effects, supporting its potential as an anticonvulsant and antiepileptic agent with a novel mechanism of action.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if, after adjusting for the contribution of exercise dose, exercise intensity was associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity. Abdominally obese, sedentary men (n = 16, (mean ± SD) age 45.0 ± 7.5 years, waist circumference 108.6 ± 5.3 cm) and women (n = 18, (mean ± SD) age 42.3 ± 6.2 years, waist circumference 100.1 ± 8.2 cm) performed daily, supervised exercise for 3 and 4 months, respectively. Exercising at a self-selected exercise intensity, men were required to expend 700 kcal per session and women 500 kcal per session. Exercise intensity and dose were determined using heart rate and oxygen consumption data obtained from repeated graded exercise tests. Insulin sensitivity was determined by hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp. Insulin sensitivity improved in both men and women (change scores: men 7.2 ± 5.4 mg·(kg skeletal muscle (skm))(-1)·min(-1); women 5.8 ± 7.1 mg·(kg skm)(-1)·min(-1); p < 0.05). Exercise intensity was associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity in men (unstandardized regression coefficient (β) = 0.43, p = 0.02). Adjusting for exercise dose, total abdominal adipose tissue (AT), or visceral AT did not alter this association (p < 0.05). Exercise intensity was not associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity in women (β = -0.11, p = 0.7). Adjusting for exercise dose, total abdominal AT, or visceral AT did not change this association in women (p > 0.05). Our findings suggest that exercise intensity is independently associated with the improvement of insulin sensitivity in abdominally obese men but not women.  相似文献

Inferior anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) structural properties may inadequately restrain tibiofemoral joint motion following surgery, contributing to the increased risk of post‐traumatic osteoarthritis. Using both a direct measure of ACL linear stiffness and an in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2*‐based prediction model, we hypothesized that cartilage damage and ACL stiffness would increase over time, and that an inverse relationship between cartilage damage and ACL stiffness would emerge at a later stage of healing. After either 6, 12, or 24 weeks (w) of healing after ACL repair, ACL linear stiffness was determined from the force–displacement relationship during tensile testing ex vivo and predicted in vivo from the MRI T2*‐based multiple linear regression model in 24 Yucatan minipigs. Tibiofemoral cartilage was graded postmortem. There was no relationship between cartilage damage and ACL stiffness at 6 w (R2 = 0.04; p = 0.65), 12 w (R2 = 0.02; p = 0.77), or when the data from all animals were pooled (R2 = 0.02; p = 0.47). A significant inverse relationship between cartilage damage and ACL stiffness based on both ex vivo measurement (R2 = 0.90; p < 0.001) and in vivo MRI prediction (R2 = 0.78; p = 0.004) of ACL stiffness emerged at 24 w. This result suggests that 90% of the variability in gross cartilage changes is associated with the repaired ACL linear stiffness at 6 months of healing. Clinical Significance: Techniques that provide a higher stiffness to the repaired ACL may be required to mitigate the post‐traumatic osteoarthritis commonly seen after ACL injury, and MRI T2* can be used as a noninvasive estimation of ligament stiffness. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematological malignancy that is one of the more common pediatric malignancies in addition to occurring with high incidence in the aging population. Unfortunately, these patient groups are quite sensitive to toxicity from chemotherapy. Northern Labrador tea, or Rhododendron tomentosum Harmaja (a.k.a. Ledum palustre subsp. decumbens) or “tundra tea,” is a noteworthy medicinal plant used by indigenous peoples in Alaska, Canada, and Greenland to treat a diversity of ailments. However, laboratory investigations of Northern Labrador tea, and other Labrador tea family members, as botanical sources for anticancer compounds have been limited. Utilizing an AML cell line in both in vitro and in vivo studies, as well as in vitro studies using primary human AML patient samples, this study demonstrated for the first time that Northern Labrador tea extracts can exert anti‐AML activity and that this may be attributed to ursolic acid as a constituent component. Therefore, this medicinal herb holds the potential to serve as a source for further drug discovery efforts to isolate novel anti‐AML compounds.  相似文献
