Survival Rate According to Grafted Density of Korean One-Hair Follicular Units with a Hair Transplant Implanter: Experience with Four Patients

BACKGROUND: The survival rate of grafted hairs in hair transplantation has been frequently discussed by many hair-transplant surgeons. Several factors, including skill of doctors and assistants and the amount of perifollicular connective tissue, are suggested to have predictive values in foretelling the eventual quantity of hair growth. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine survival rate according to density of Korean one-hair follicular units grafted with a KNU implanter. METHODS: We designed four templates of 1 cm2 made by tattooing two templates on each side of empty frontoparietal recesses in four Korean patients with male pattern alopecia (beyond Norwood-Hamilton-Type IIIa). One-hair follicular units were prepared from occiput and we grafted 20, 30, 40, and 50 one-hair follicular units using a KNU implanter on each template, respectively, and counted the number of surviving hairs after 10 months. RESULTS: The survival rate of 20 and 30 grafts per template was higher than that of 40 and 50 grafts. CONCLUSION: We think that 30 one-hair follicular units grafted with a KNU implanter is the proper density for better survival in Korean hair transplantation, and repeated sessions will be necessary for a better final result. However, we need further evaluation with a larger number of participants to overcome the small sample size and limitation of one-hair follicular unit grafts. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters.     

Simplified Tilt Table Test Protocol with Continuous Upright Position During Medication Administration and No Hydration

Recommendations for head-up tilt testing (HUT) often include the prolonged abstaining from food and water consumption (nothing by mouth [NPO]) and intravenous fluids administration before HUT. After the baseline test, supine equilibration periods are recommended before and between each dose of medication. The aim of this study was to determine if similar results are obtainable with a simpler protocol. After 2–3 hours NPO, 1,540 HUTs were performed at 70 degrees for 30 minutes unless predetermined endpoints were reached. Then, with the patient remaining in the tilted position, isoproterenol (ISO) (1 μg/min), titrated every 3 minutes to a maximum of   5 μg/min   (   n = 803   patients), sublingual nitroglycerin (NTG) (300–400 μg) (   n = 143   patients), or edrophonium (EDP) (5 mg) repeated once after 3 minutes   (n = 46 patients)   were administered. No aspiration or other adverse effects attributable to the abbreviated fasting period were observed. ISO was well tolerated as doses were increased. Vasovagal manifestations developed in 31% of ISO tests, in 11% with EDP, and in 50% with NTG (   P < 0.001   ). Time consumed with rehydration before and postural changes during HUTs may be avoided when ISO is administered. With NTG the response may be excessive. (PACE 2003; 26[Pt. II]:451–452)     

Immunoreactivity of Hu proteins facilitates identification of myenteric neurones in guinea-pig small intestine

Hu proteins, together with neurone-specific enolase (NSE), protein gene product 9.5 (PGP-9.5), microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP-2) and tubulin beta III isoform, were evaluated immunohistochemically as neuronal markers in whole-mount preparations and cultures obtained from the myenteric plexus of guinea-pig small intestine. Anti-Hu immunostaining marked the ganglion cell somas and nuclei without staining of the neuronal processes in the whole-mounts and cultures. The ganglion cell bodies were not obscured by staining of multiple neuronal fibres and this facilitated accurate counting of the neurones. MAP2 immunostaining also provided clear images of individual neurones in both whole mounts and cultures. Immunoreactivity for NSE, PGP-9.5 and tubulin beta III isoform provided sharp images of the ganglion cells in culture, but not in whole-mount preparations. Strong staining of the neuronal processes in the whole-mount preparations obscured the profiles of the ganglion cell bodies to such an extent that accurate counting of the total neuronal population was compromised. Anti-Hu immunostaining was judged to be an acceptable method for obtaining reliable estimates of total numbers of myenteric neurones in relation to other specific histochemical properties such as histamine binding.
