Nutrition of cruciate ligament reconstruction by diffusion: Collagen synthesis studied in rabbits

The reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament was studied in the rabbit using the medial third of the patellar tendon. Tritiated proline, 100 μCi/kg body weight, was injected intra-articularly to insure detection of the metabolic conversion product ³H-hydroxyproline in the avascular graft. During the immediate postoperative period, nutrients were found to derive from the synovial fluid through a process of diffusion, demonstrating that synovial nutrition occurs prior to revascularization of the graft.     

Effect of salicylate therapy on cartilage destruction in experimental pyarthrosis

An experimental rabbit pyarthrosis model was utilized to investigate the effects of sodium salicylate therapy on cartilage destruction. Animals were innoculated with 10(3) organisms of Staphylococcus aureus 502A. The opposite knee was injected with sterile saline. Infection was documented 48 hours post innoculation, procaine penicillin therapy initiated, and the adequacy of therapy evaluated at sacrifice. One half of the animals began salicylate feedings one week prior to injection and this continued until sacrifice at 14 or 49 days. Salicylate levels were 12.5 +/- 6.9 mg %. There was a significant loss of cartilage in both the salicylate treated and untreated animals. The levels of salicylate obtained in this study were not protective to cartilage in a septic joint.

Salvage chemotherapy in resistant malignant lymphomas (author's transl)

A salvage chemotherapy was used in advanced malignant lymphomas resistant to previous chemotherapy. The chemotherapy schedule consisted by the monthly administration of vindesine and continuous infusions of bleomycins, associated with cis-diammine-dichloro-platinum in Hodgkin's disease (patients resistant to MOPP and ABVD protocols) and with DTIC in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (patients resistant to CHOP or equivalent protocol). In 10 patients with advanced Hodgkin's disease (stages III and IV), one complete remission and four partial regressions were achieved. Five patients are still alive after 6 and 14 months. In 15 non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients, two complete remissions and seven partial regressions were achieved. Eight patients are still alive after 4 to 12 months. Severe toxicities related to the chemotherapy protocol have never been observed. These results demonstrate the efficiency of the described chemotherapy schedules in advanced malignant lymphomas resistant to visual therapy.
