An epitope shared by central nervous system myelin and peripheral blood macrophages

Lewis rats were immunized with a homogenate of human spinal cord. Splenocytes from the immunized rats were fused with cells from the SP2/0-Ag14 cell line to form hybrids that were subsequently screened immunohistochemically for secretion of antibodies against myelin. Thirty hybrids secreting anti-myelin antibodies were cloned. One secreted antibody (774) that immunohistochemically stained central nervous system (CNS) myelin but not peripheral nervous system (PNS) myelin also bound to the surface of peripheral blood macrophages. Hence we have identified an epitope that is shared by peripheral blood macrophages and CNS myelin.     

Race and ethnic differences and human figure drawings: clinical utility of the DAP:SPED.

This study examined race and ethnic differences on the Draw A Person: Screening Procedure for Emotional Disturbance (DAP:SPED; Naglieri, McNeish, & Bardos, 1991) for youths 6 though 17 years of age for 2 matched samples. Samples were drawn from the DAP:SPED nationally representative standardization sample and matched on gender, grade, and school classroom. No statistically significant differences were found for big figure, small figure, or shading item composites. A statistically significant difference was found between Black-White pairs on figure omissions but showed a small effect size (d value = .25). Further, no statistically significant differences were found between the DAP:SPED Total T scores for Black and White youth (M = 47.67, SD = 10.09; N =138) or Hispanic and White youth (M = 48.20, SD = 9.56; N = 59), showing very small effect sizes. In addition, equivalence testing showed similarities across race and ethnic pairs for all composites and DAP:SPED total score, lending preliminary support to the DAP:SPED's clinical utility as a measure that yields similar scores across these groups.     

PILOT PROJECTS TO STIMULATE ADVERSE DRUG REACTION REPORTING

Schemes for stimulating adverse drug reporting are described with particular emphasis on a recently introduced Mississippi Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Programme.     

On the physical properties of red cell ghost membranes in the affective disorders and psychoses A fluorescence polarization study

Membrane order was measured in the erythrocyte ghost membranes of DSM-III schizophreniform disorder (SF), DSM-III schizophrenic (SCZ) and DSM-III manic (bipolar) (M) patients and a group of age- and sex-matched controls. Fluorescence polarization with the probe 1,6-diphenyl1-1,3,5-hexatriene was used to determine the steady-state fluorescence anisotropy (r_s). The SF group showed a significant increase in r_s (Δr_s = 0.037) from the control group. Although the means were not significantly different, 3 of 8 Ms and 5 of 8 SCZs also had r_s values > the highest control value. Thermotropic behavior of the membranes was evaluated over the range of 40 to 20°C. No difference among groups in membrane enthalpy was detected. Thus, the differences in r_s appear to be associated with differences in entropy. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels, which were known to be abnormal in these patients, were compared with the r_s values. A significant (P < 0.001, R= -0.63) linear correlation between r_s and membrane PC levels was observed. Overall these data further support the view that unusual membrane biophysical factors may occur with high frequency in the psychoses and affective disorders.     

Using digital photography to visualize, plan, and prepare a complex porcelain veneer case.

Visualization and pre-operative plan are critical to efficient and thorough case preparation. Congenitally missing teeth, coupled with improper tooth positioning, can compromise the aesthetic rehabilitation outcome. Utilizing pre-treatment digital photography as an outline for tooth reduction and laser tissue re-contouring may help to create a symmetric and pleasing smile, even under less ideal conditions.
