Gated MR imaging of left atrial myxomas

Two cases of left atrial myxoma were evaluated with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In both cases, the myxoma was clearly defined as to its location, origin, and size. In one case, the myxoma prolapsed through the mitral valve. Our study indicates that MR imaging is valuable in the diagnosis of myxomas.     

CNS malformations in the kraków region. I. Birth prevalence and seasonal incidence during 1979–1981

The birth prevalence of CNS malformations in the region of Krakow from 1979 to 1981 was determined to be 1.26/1000 from records of all live- and still-birth deliveries. The frequency of anencephaly was 0.23/1,000; spina bifida and encephalocele, 0.70/1000; isolated hydrocephaly, 0.26/1,000; and other CNS anomalies, 0.06/1,000. The observed rates are below the median European level. Female preponderance was found among the probands with anencephaly, encephalomeningocele, and myelomeningocele. Cytogenetic examination of 35 newborns with CNS malformations documented normal karyotypes in all neonates. The analysis of seasonal distribution of proband's birthdate and of date of mother's last menstrual period showed no significant seasonal trend.     

The hemasite-incorporated graft: Operative technique and early results

A new device (the Hemasite-incorporated graft), has been available to provide access for hemodialysis. Herein, we have described the technique to insert the device and reviewed our early experience. Sixteen Hemasite-incorporated grafts were inserted in 11 patients over a 16 month period. Cumulative functional patency at the end of 1 year was 70 percent. The major complication rate was 0.15 per dialysis month. Patient comfort was considerably increased compared with what was achieved with other grafts. The need for temporary blood access methods is also decreased. More patients may be able to receive hemodialysis at home.     

Practical and technical considerations in establishing an intraoperative radiation therapy program in the community practice

The Radiation Oncology Center in Sacramento, California, has developed a procedure for establishing an intraoperative radiation therapy facility in a community practice. The logistics pertaining to personnel, equipment, physical measurements, and quality assurance are presented. Particular emphasis is given to the most effective means of acquiring the large quantity of data needed to ensure a program of acceptable quality.     

Monozygotic pregnancy after the treatment for infertility by transfer of frozen-thawed embryos]

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that monozygotic pregnancies occur more frequently after in vitro fertilisation. This phenomenon is attributed to a number of factors including in vitro culture conditions, malformation of the zona pellucida due to manipulation on the oocytes and artificial opening of the zona pellucida. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of monozygotic pregnancies in an IVF-ET procedures and obstetrical these pregnancies outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2254 IVF-ET procedures were analysed. Three protocols were used for ovarian stimulation: short or long protocols with gonadotropins releasing hormone analogue or clomiphene citrate with hMG. In 811 cases male factor was diagnosed and intracitoplasmatic sperm injections were performed. RESULTS: 549 clinical pregnancies were achieved in analysed group. In six cases ultrasound examination 5 weeks after embryo transfer showed a greater number of foetus than the number of embryo transferred. In three of those cases the embryos were obtained after ICSI. Age and average thickness of zona pellucida were similar in group of patients with monozygotic pregnancies when compared with all pregnant patients after IVF treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of monozygotic pregnancy is increased in group pregnancies resulting from IVF ET. No single risk factor can explain this phenomena. This type of pregnancy needs special obstetrical attention.
