BackgroundPregnancy is a key step for human''s reproduction and continuity of generation. Pregnant women are among at risk groups for the infection of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). STHs are highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries due to the deprived environmental sanitation and personal hygiene. Eating soil (geophagia) is also commonly practiced by pregnant women, particularly in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of STHs and geophagia, and to assess associated factors among pregnant women in Jimma, Southwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross sectional study was conducted among 407 pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at different health facilities located in Jimma Town. Data related to sociodemographic and geophagia practice was collected using a structured questionnaire and STH infections status was determined by using McMaster technique.ResultsA total of 407 pregnant women were included in this study. The overall prevalence of any STHs was 19.7% (80/407). Ascaris lumbricoides was the most prevalent 45(56.2%), followed by Trichuris trichiura 19(23.8%) and hookworms 12(15%). There were 4(5%) of double infection with A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura. Overall, 71 (17.4%) of the pregnant women responded to practice geophagia. STHs infection was significantly higher among geophagic pregnant women (p<0.01) and pregnant women who practiced geophagia were 3 times more likely (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.3–4.2) to have the STHs compared to non-geophagic. Out of those who claimed soil eating habits, 59.1% preferred reddish soil type. Geophagia practice was significantly higher during the third trimester as compared to first and second (p<0.05).ConclusionGeophagia is a risky behavior and this study showed a significant association of geophagia practice with STH infections, although the causal relation could not be established.  相似文献

BackgroundNeck pain is a common health problem throughout the world causing significant individual disability and economic burden on health care facility. Many factors are mentioned as a cause or association in relation to neck pain, of which degenerative and posttraumatic cause are the main ones. The aim of this study is to assess cervical spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) patterns in patients presented with neck pain.MethodsA retrospective analysis of 160 patients who had cervical spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for evaluation of a neck pain was done. The study was conducted between February to August 2018 at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. The patients'' clinical history and magnetic resonance imaging reports were reviewed from their medical records. All patients who have cervical spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for a neck pain were included in the study. Those patients with acute traumatic neck pain were excluded.ResultsFrom a total of 160 patients, 71(44.4%) were males and 89(55.6%) were females. Degenerative cervical spine findings such as intervertebral disc degenerations were seen in 127(79.4%) patients. Non-degenerative imaging findings such as neoplasm and infection were seen in 10(6.3%) patients only. The MRI was normal in 23(14.4%) of them.ConclusionThe most common cause of neck pain from this study is degenerative changes of the cervical spine, which was predominant in the older age groups. Non-degenerative causes such as neoplasm and infection were less common findings.  相似文献

Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) is the most important human transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (prion disease), recognised in sporadic, genetic but also iatrogenic forms. The identification of 8 health care workers in a group of 114 definitive CJD patients in Slovakia suggested the possibility of professionaly acquired CJD and induced the investigation of potential endo- and exogenous risk factors. In CJD-affected health professionals special attention was paid to a detailed occupational history, including a possible professional contact with CJD patient and to the findings characteristic for iatrogenic CJD: early cerebellar symptomatology, long duration of the disease, absence of typical EEG finding and homozygosity of PRNP gene at codon 129. Analysis of epidemiological, clinical and molecular biological data in investigated group of CJD-affected health professionals gave no evidence of an occupational risk for CJD.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of stent graft coverage of hypogastric artery in the management of aortoiliac aneurysms. Between January 2000 and December 2002, 98 patients underwent endovascular repair of aortoiliac aneurysms (EVAR). Of these, 24 (24.5%) required occlusion of one hypogastric artery to facilitate the endovascular repair. Based on the method of hypogastric artery occlusion, patients were divided in to two groups. Group A (13/24 = 54%) underwent standard coil embolization followed by hypogastric artery orifice coverage whereas group B (11/24 = 46) underwent hypogastric artery orifice coverage without coil embolization. Post-EVAR computed tomographic angiography (CTA) was used to determine occurrence of endoleaks from the hypogastric artery orifice and patency of superior gluteal artery in both groups. These findings were further correlated with presence or absence of gluteal claudication. There was no difference in age (p < 0.38) or iliac aneurysm size (p < 0.3). In group A (13 patients), occlusion of superior gluteal artery was seen in 6 (46%). Four of six (66%) patients developed severe gluteal claudication. Patients in group A were likely to require more than one intervention (p < 0.00036). No patients in group B developed occlusion of the superior gluteal artery (p < 0.04) or gluteal claudication (p < 0.046). No endoleaks were seen from the origins of hypogastric artery in either group. The follow-up period ranged from 2 to 35 months. Hypogastric artery orifice coverage without coil embolization effectively prevented retrograde endoleak without the occurrence of disabling gluteal claudication. AIM: To determine the magnitude and causes of low vision and blindness in the Gurage zone, central Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross sectional study using a multistage cluster sampling technique was used to identify the study subjects. Visual acuity was recorded for all adults 40 years and older. Subjects who had a visual acuity of <6/18 were examined by an ophthalmologist to determine the cause of low vision or blindness. RESULTS: From the enumerated population, 2693 (90.8%) were examined. The prevalence of blindness (<3/60 better eye presenting vision) was 7.9% (95% CI 6.9 to 8.9) and of low vision (6/24-3/60 better eye presenting vision) was 12.1% (95% CI 10.9 to 13.3). Monocular blindness was recorded in 16.3% of the population. Blindness and low vision increased with age. The odds of low vision and blindness in women were 1.8 times that of the men. The leading causes of blindness were cataract (46.1%), trachoma (22.9%), and glaucoma (7.6%). While the prevalence of vision reducing cataract increased with age, the prevalence of trachoma related vision loss did not increase with age, suggesting that trichiasis related vision loss in this population might not be cumulative. CONCLUSION: The magnitude of low vision and blindness is high in this zone and requires urgent intervention, particularly for women. Further investigation of the pattern of vision loss, particularly as a result of trachomatous trichiasis, is warranted.  相似文献
