The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Atlantic salmon consumption on underlying biological mechanisms associated with anxiety such as heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) as well as a measure of self-reported anxiety. Moreover, these biological and self-reported outcome measures were investigated in relation to specific nutrients; vitamin D status, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Ninety-five male forensic inpatients were randomly assigned into a Fish (Atlantic salmon three times per week from September to February) or a Control group (alternative meal, e.g., chicken, pork, or beef three times per week during the same period). HRV measured as the root mean square of successive differences (rMSSD), HR, state- and trait-anxiety (STAI), were assessed before (pre-test) and at the end of the 23 weeks dietary intervention period (post-test). The Fish group showed significant improvements in both rMSSD and HR. The Fish group also showed significant decreases in state-anxiety. Finally, there was a positive relationship between rMSSD and vitamin D status. The findings suggest that Atlantic salmon consumption may have an impact on mental health related variables such as underlying mechanisms playing a key role in emotion-regulation and state-anxiety. 相似文献

During the bloodstage of malaria infection, the parasite internalizes and degrades massive amounts of hemoglobin from the host red blood cell. Using serial thin-section electron microscopy and three-dimensional reconstruction, we demonstrate four independent, but partially overlapping, hemoglobin-uptake processes distinguishable temporally, morphologically, and pharmacologically. Early ring-stage parasites undergo a profound morphological transformation in which they fold, like a cup, onto themselves and in so doing take a large first gulp of host cell cytoplasm. This event, which we term the "Big Gulp," appears to be independent of actin polymerization and marks the first step in biogenesis of the parasite's lysosomal compartment-the food vacuole. A second, previously identified uptake process, uses the cytostome, a well characterized and morphologically distinct structure at the surface of the parasite. This process is more akin to classical endocytosis, giving rise to small (<0.004 fl) vesicles that are marked by the early endosomal regulatory protein Rab5a. A third process, also arising from cytostomes, creates long thin tubes previously termed cytostomal tubes in an actin-dependent manner. The fourth pathway, which we term phagotrophy, is similar to the Big Gulp in that it more closely resembles phagocytosis, except that phagotrophy does not require actin polymerization. The immunocytochemical detection of multidrug-resistance (MDR) associated P-glycoprotein (P-170) was longitudinally performed on bone marrow smears from 32 responsive patients with acute leukaemia in the different phases of the disease (at diagnosis, in complete remission, at relapse) by means of APAAP technique and monoclonal antibody C219. The whole group of eight patients with presence of P-170 positive cells while in complete remission rapidly relapsed with a high proportion of blasts showing MDR phenotype; they were resistant to further treatments. Twelve out of 24 subjects without cells with MDR phenotype in complete remission remained in this condition, six had a responsive relapse (without significant expression of P-170 in 5/6 patients) and six a resistant relapse. Four patients of this last group significantly expressed P-170. Our data indicate that the detection of scattered P-170 positive cells during complete remission might identify a subset of leukaemic patients with high risk of early and resistant relapse. 相似文献

The expression and functional activity of CXC chemokine receptors were evaluated in human osteoblasts (OB) obtained post-trauma
from old donors compared to very young donors. It was found that CXCR1 and CXCR4 were only expressed by old but not young
donors' cells. In contrast, CXCR3 and CXCR5 were expressed by both young and old donors. We functionally evaluated CXCR3/CXCL10
and CXCR5/CXCL13 receptor/ligand pairs by analysing cell proliferation and the release of N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG),
an enzyme that degrades glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid. CXCL10 and CXCL13 induced a dose-dependent increase of cell
proliferation in OB from young donors while cell proliferation of OB in old donors was not affected. By contrast, CXCL10 and
CXCL13 induced a significantly higher NAG release in OB from old donors compared to young ones. These data demonstrate a significant
age-dependent difference in the response of OB to CXCL10 and CXCL13 stimulation. These chemokines induce an inverse response
of OB from old and young donors, which suggests a role of ageing in the modulation of cellular response of bone cells.
