Outcomes of outpatient breast cancer surgery at a private breast clinic

Advances in surgical and anesthetic techniques have allowed for outpatient treatment of breast cancer. We evaluated the feasibility, safety, efficacy, and surgical outcomes of outpatient surgery in 370 patients with breast cancer who underwent breast‐conserving surgery (BCS)/axillar lymph node (ALN) management. There were no deaths or severe intraoperative complications, but 41 complications were observed and disease recurrence occurred in 18 patients. The cumulative overall survival rate was 95.2%. Outpatient surgery was well tolerated, feasible, and safe in patients receiving BCS/ALN management.     

Interaction between BDNF Val66Met and childhood stressful life events is associated to affective memory bias in men but not women

Recent meta-analyses point towards a pathogenic role of the Val66Met variant of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in major depressive disorder, specifically in males. We investigated whether BDNF Val66Met shows a male-specific interaction with childhood stressful life events on affective memory bias, a cognitive susceptibility factor for depression. Healthy volunteers (n = 430; 272 females and 158 males) were genotyped for BDNF Val66Met (rs6265) and completed the self-referent encoding task and a childhood stressful life events scale. BDNF Met carriers reporting childhood events tended to recall a lower proportion of positive words compared to Val/Val homozygotes reporting childhood events. Sex-specific analyses revealed that the BDNF genotype × childhood events interaction was significant in male participants and not in female participants. The results suggest that in males, BDNF Val66Met interacts with childhood life events, increasing the cognitive susceptibility markers of depression. In females, this effect may be independent of BDNF Val66Met.     

Severe combined immunodeficiency in Frisian Water Dogs caused by a RAG1 mutation

Mortality of pups at 8-12 weeks of age was frequently observed in Frisian Water Dogs. Blood parameters and clinical signs of newborns from three litters were monitored. Three pups from two litters showed strongly reduced levels of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes. These dogs were euthanized after first display of disease. Concurrent clinical and pathological features were consistent with a diagnosis of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Defective V(D)J recombination is one of the causes of SCID in humans and animals. Eight genes involved in V(D)J recombination were investigated by segregation analysis of closely located microsatellite markers and by DNA sequence analysis. A nonsense mutation in the gene coding for V(D)J recombination factor RAG1 was identified in DNA from the cases at a position similar to that of nonsense mutations found in human SCID. It was concluded that SCID due to a mutation of RAG1 led to the high mortality.
