Background
This study presents data on the prevalence rate of infectious markers among voluntary and replacement donors in the blood transfusion service in Armed Forces from 2000 to 2004.Methods
39,646 units of blood were collected from donors during the period from 2000 to 2004. All the samples were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) 1&2, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and by venereal disease research laboratory test (VDRL).Results
24,527 (61.9%) were voluntary donations and 15,119 (38.1%) replacement donations. Prevalence of HBsAg had decreased, amongst voluntary donors from 1.67% to 0.77% but the positivity rate has not showed significant change. Seropositivity of HIV had decreased both in voluntary and replacement donors to 0.22% and 0.86% respectively. The seropositivity for anti-HCV showed steady decrease amongst voluntary donors from 0.46% to 0.20% in 2004, but in replacement donors, there was an increase in reactivity rate from 0.43% to 0.65%.Conclusion
The increased seropositivity for HCV, HIV and HBsAg could be decreased by introduction of nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) in minipools for HCV and HIV and introduction of anti-HBcAg (IgM) for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. But this may not be possible in near future in developing countries due to financial constraints. In the present study, the plasma levels of lipoproteins, triglycerides, and cholesterol were followed serially in a group of 57 patients with acute viral hepatitis. Mean plasma triglyceride levels were found elevated at the onset of the disease and gradually returned to normal, while mean plasma cholesterol values, low initially, gradually increased. α-lipoprotein was absent at the early stage of hepatitis in 41 out of 46 patients with mild or moderate course and reappeared gradually during the course of the disease. In 11 cases of viral hepatitis with impending or overt coma, α-lipoprotein was absent for the whole duration of the acute stage and never reappeared in those who eventually died, while it eventually returned to normal in those who survived. The reappearance of α-lipoprotein in acute viral hepatitis appears to be a sensitive index of improvement and a significant prognostic sign. 相似文献

The major objectives of this cross-sectional study were to (1) measure insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in individuals with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) and spasticity and (2) determine the relationships between IGF-1 and cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of thigh skeletal muscle groups. Eight individuals with motor complete SCI underwent magnetic resonance imaging to measure the CSA of the whole thigh, knee extensor, and knee flexor skeletal muscle groups and dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry to measure fat-free mass. After participants fasted for 12 h, we measured their IGF-1 levels and determined spasticity using the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS). Spearman rho correlations were used to test for the relationships among the tested variables, and independent t-tests were used to determine the difference in plasma IGF-1. Plasma IGF-1 was 44% greater in those with MAS scores of 2 or higher (p < 0.05). Plasma IGF-1 was positively related to knee extensor skeletal muscle CSA (r = 0. 83, p < 0.01). IGF-1 was strongly related to knee extensor and flexor spasticity (r = 0.88, p < 0.004). The findings suggest that IGF-1 is greater in SCI individuals with increased spasticity, and this may explain the strong positive relationships that were noted between spasticity and skeletal muscle CSA. 相似文献
