Summary A patient who developed a unilateral opercular syndrome following a cerebrovascular accident is described. Computed tomography showed that the lesion did not affect the opercular cortex, but involved deep white matter and the head of the caudate nucleus of the left hemisphere. Insomnia in psychiatric patients is frequently underestimated in clinical practice. Usually drugs are prescribed for the treatment of this disorder but non-pharmacological intervention can be successfully used. The present study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a two-session psychoeducational intervention in improving persistent non-organic insomnia and reducing the administration of PRN therapy in severely mentally ill patients. A pre-post study was performed on 36 psychiatric patients admitted to a residential psychiatric unit. The Nocturnal Sleep Onset Scale (NSOS) and Daytime Sleepiness Scale (DSS), the sleep onset latency, the time awake after sleep onset and the numbers of awakenings were gathered 2 weeks before the intervention (T0), immediately prior the intervention (T1), 2 weeks after the last session of the intervention (T2) and a 3-month follow-up (T3). The total number of administrations of PRN therapy from T0 to T1 and from T1 to T2 were also examined. A significant reduction was shown on the NSOS, the sleep onset latency and in the time awake after sleep onset from T1 to T2 and from T1 to T3, while no significant difference was found between T0 and T1. A significant decrease on the mean number of administrations of PRN therapy was also found between 15 days before the intervention (T0-T1) and 15 days after intervention (T1-T2). The initial results of this study seems to suggest the possible efficacy of a short-term psychoeducational intervention on improving persistent non-organic insomnia in severely mentally ill patients. Abstract: CD24 or Nectadrin is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed in pre-B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, neurons, muscle cells and carcinoma cells. Its function is not completely known, but it has been suggested that it is involved in cell adhesion and signalling. CD24 has recently been identified as the human molecule homologous to the murine heat-stable antigen (HSA). HSA is expressed by murine keratinocytes and delivers costimulatory signals in T-cell activation. Long-term cultures of normal human keratinocytes (HKC) were obtained from skin of human female breast sections and either left untreated or were treated with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) at 10–100 ng/ml, calcium 0.5–2 mM or IFN-γ 100–1000 U/ml, for 24–48 h. Using RT-PCR and flow cytometry we showed that HKC express low levels of CD24 even under basal conditions, and the treatment with calcium, PMA or IFN-γ increased levels of CD24 mRNA and protein. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to measure CD24 expression and production by cultured HKC in basal conditions and after stimulation. Further studies are needed to determine biological and therapeutical relevance of these findings. 相似文献

Summary In the 4th International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL), staging and response criteria were proposed to help physicians make decisions on when and how to treat patients with CLL. The most important factor is prolonging survival. Summary The pharmacokinetics of the anticancer agent p-(3,3-dimethyl-1-triazeno) benzoic acid (pCOOH-DMT), a drug now in phase I clinical trial in Europe, was investigated in C57 Bl female mice with M5076 reticulum-cell sarcoma that were treated i.v. with 200 mg/kg pCOOH-DMT. The drug disappeared from plasma with a terminal half-life of about 2.5 h. Plasma clearance was approximately 6 ml/min per kg. Distribution studies showed some differences in drug levels in different tissues. The highest levels were found in the tumor, liver, kidney and lung; lower levels were found in the spleen and gut, and the lowest, in the brain. The N-desmethyl derivative of pCOOH-DMT was not detectable in plasma or tissues of mice treated with the drug. Therefore, the previous evidence of low N-demethylation of pCOOH-DMT was confirmed. pCOOH-DMT glucuronide was identified by mass spectrometry and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in plasma, tissues and urine samples. pCOOH-DMT glucuronide appears to be the major urinary metabolite of pCOOH-DMT in mice. Another metabolite identified by mass spectrometry and quantified by HPLC in some tissues and urine was pCOOH-DMT glycinate.Abbreviations DTIlC

A panel of chimpanzee-human somatic cell hybrids was characterized by dual Alu-PCR of the chimpanzee DNA in the hybrid and subsequent hybridization of the labeled PCR products to human and chimpanzee chromosomes. In addition to the identification of the intact chimpanzee chromosomes retained in each hybrid, chromosome fragments were identified that will be useful in regional mapping. Using an in vitro assay to measure O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MT) activity in cell extracts from a panel of human-hamster cell hybrids, we were able to locate the human MT gene on chromosome 10. Chinese hamster cells have little or no MT activity and the presence of human chromosome 10 was a necessary condition for MT activity in cell hybrids. In some cell hybrids carrying chromosome 10, however, MT activity was not higher than that of hamster cells. As an explanation for this result, genetic determinants repressing MT expression and/or activity might be present in other human chromosomes carried by MT-negative cell hybrids. Partial hyperploidy of the hamster karyotype, variable activity of the parental human cell lines and changes during subculturing of the cell hybrids might also account for the lack of enzymatic activity in chromosome 10 containing hybrids. 相似文献
