fMRT vor Motorkortexstimulation beim Phantomschmerz

This study deals with the diagnostic value of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a patient with phantom limb pain following traumatic amputation of the right arm. After failure with medication, resection of stump neurinoma, and spinal cord stimulation, fMRI with evidence of cortical reorganization was performed. Tactile stimulation of the perioral region and motor imagery with cranial, tactile stimulation of the stump led to a caudal shift in fMRI activity. Subsequent motor cortex stimulation brought relief from the pain. By detecting cortical reorganization, fMRI contributes to the indication for motor cortex stimulation for phantom pain and aids in electrode positioning.

After a short review of the literature about addiction in the working place, a study is presented that evaluates the alcohol use of all employees (n=301) in a clinic. The readiness to cooperate was very strong (72%). The openness (investigated with the FPI subscale for openness) was also satisfactory. Results showed a surprisingly high proportion of notable alcohol use by employees (26%). Especially the group of young female employees showed a high range of stress indicators: alcohol use (28.6%), nicotine (24.2%) and eating disorders (22.9%), and moderate-to-strong consumption of medication (12.1%). A sex-specific model of the development of addiction will be suggested based on these study results. A program of preventive measures was implemented integrating well-known components of established successful preventive measures and considering the special environment of the clinic.     

Stereotypes of ageing and sporting activity in the over-50s

Stereotypes of ageing affect activity in older adults. However, no representative studies on the impact of "images of ageing" on sporting activity existed until now. In a telephone survey, 2002 over-50s were asked about sporting activity and their opinions about ageing. A factor analysis of the queried attitudes disclosed five dimensions of ageing stereotypes. A subsequent cluster analysis identified three categories of attitudes towards ageing: "fit and performance-hungry", "conventional", and "easy-going and committed". Physical activity was described as the key criterion for a healthy old age in all clusters. Analysis also revealed a significant correlation between cluster affiliation and amount of sporting activity. The percentage of non-exercisers is lowest in Cluster 1, the "fit and performance-hungry" category (29.4%), and highest in Cluster 3, the "worryfree committed" (51.6%). Sports for health and trendy sports are the sports of choice, while conventional sports attract little interest.
