Hair selenium status in children with leukemia and lymphoma   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Selenium (Se) is a trace element contributing to the structure of antioxidant system that saves cells from reactive oxygen species. Low serum Se levels have been reported in pediatric and adult patients with cancers. On the other hand, hair Se levels, predicting the long-term body Se status, have been reported in only adult patients with cancer. The aim of the study was to investigate the hair Se status in children with newly diagnosed lymphoid malignancies and the relation between malnutrition and Se deficiency. Thirty patients with leukemia (n=17) and lymphoma (n=13), and 25 healthy controls were enrolled to the study. Se was determined with atomic absorption spectrophotometrical method. Hair Se levels of the patients were significantly lower than those of control group [666.96+/-341.46 ng/g vs. 1019.22+/-371.83 ng/g (P<0.001)]. Children with lymphoma had lower Se than the children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia but not statistically significant [547.03+/-283.67 ng/g vs. 758.67+/-361.05 ng/g (P>0.05)]. Malnourished patients (11/30) had lower hair Se levels (483.51+/-235.55 ng/g) than those of the controls (P=0.036), whereas the Se levels of the patients who had no malnutrition (773.17+/-352.92 ng/g) were also lower than those of the controls but not statistically significant (P=0.053). There was no correlation between age, sex, and the hair Se levels. In this study, we found that hair Se levels of the children with leukemia and lymphoma, especially those of malnourished patients, were lower than those of controls. Additional studies are needed to determinate whether low levels of hair Se may play a role in carcinogenesis.  相似文献

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is mainly secreted by the liver. It is a factor that is not fully understood in relation to growth. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is a deacetylase protein. It is thought that may have an effect on the release and function of GH and IGF-1. Visfatin is synthesized from adipose tissue as primary. It may be prognostic marker associated with growth factors. As a result of our work, FGF21 is not associated with short stature but levels of SIRT1 and visfatin are associated with short stature. The decrease in visfatin value in the short-stature group is thought to be due to an insufficient amount of adipose tissue, which is important for growth and development. SIRT1 might decrease GH effect by increasing STAT5 deacetylation in the liver and we think that the result of this reduction of SIRT1 would negatively impact IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 production.  相似文献

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and fatal disorder that any valuable advance in the management of diseases has crucial importance. The present study aimed to compare the Endothelin1 (ET1) inhibitor bosentan which is regarded as standard therapy with different dose regimens of palosuran which is urotensin-II (UII) inhibitor and explore the discrepancy for mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP), UII, ET1 levels, and pulmonary vascular pathology. Seventy rats were randomly divided into seven groups of ten animals each: group 1 (control group) received the vehicle subcutaneously, instead of monocrotaline (MCT) and vehicle; group 2 (MCT group) received subcutaneous MCT and vehicle; and group 3 (MCT + palosuran 30 mg) received subcutaneous MCT and palosuran. Other groups consist of group 4 (MCT + palosuran 100 mg), group 5 (MCT + bosentan 30 mg), group 6 (MCT + bosentan 100 mg), and group 7 (combination therapy). Serum ET1, UII, mPAP levels, and pulmonary arteriolar pathology of different diameter vessels of all groups have been measured and recorded. The ET1 and UII levels of untreated rats (group 2) were significantly higher than the other groups (p?<?0.05). Moreover, mPAP levels of group 2 were significantly higher than the other groups (p?=?0.001). Finally, 50–125-μm diameter of arteriole wall thickness was found to be significantly thicker in monocrotaline group compared to groups 4 and 6 (p?<?0.001). Statistical differences of wall thickness/diameter ratios of arteries and arterioles larger than 125 was found to be significant between group 5, group 6, and the control group (p?<?0.001). UII inhibitor is at least as effective as standard therapy bosentan. Findings of this study consolidate that palosuran could be a new future promising therapeutic option in PAH.  相似文献

Background/aimIn this study, we aimed to compare the results of prone and Barts “flank-free” modified supine percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) operations in our clinic.Materials and methods The data from patients that underwent Barts “flank-free” modified supine PCNL (BS-PCNL) (n = 52) between June 2018 and July 2020 and prone PCNL (P-PCNL) (n = 286) between April 2014 and June 2018 were retrospectively evaluated. Of those 286 patients, 104 patients whose sex, age, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiology score, stone localization, stone size, and hydronephrosis matched the BS-PCNL group in a 1:2 ratio were included in the study. The groups were compared in terms of intraoperative outcome, complication rates, and stone-free rates.Results The mean age of all patients (58 females, 98 males) included in the study was 41.8 ± 15.2 years, and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 24.7 ± 2.9 kg/m2. The mean operation time was significantly shorter in the BS-PCNL group than in the P-PCNL group (80.2 ± 15.1 min vs. 92.4 ± 22.7 min and p = 0.01). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of fluoroscopy time, intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, and stone-free rates.Conclusion Our study shows that BS-PCNL is an effective and safe method that significantly reduces the operation time and should be considered as one of the primary treatment options for patients scheduled for PCNL.  相似文献

Xq22 deletions that encompass PLP1 (Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL) are notable for variable expressivity of neurological disease traits in females ranging from a mild late‐onset form of spastic paraplegia type 2 (MIM# 312920), sometimes associated with skewed X‐inactivation, to an early‐onset neurological disease trait (EONDT) of severe developmental delay, intellectual disability, and behavioral abnormalities. Size and gene content of Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL vary and were proposed as potential molecular etiologies underlying variable expressivity in carrier females where two smallest regions of overlap (SROs) were suggested to influence disease. We ascertained a cohort of eight unrelated patients harboring Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL and performed high‐density array comparative genomic hybridization and breakpoint‐junction sequencing. Molecular characterization of Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL from 17 cases (eight herein and nine published) revealed an overrepresentation of breakpoints that reside within repeats (11/17, ~65%) and the clustering of ~47% of proximal breakpoints in a genomic instability hotspot with characteristic non‐B DNA density. These findings implicate a potential role for genomic architecture in stimulating the formation of Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL. The correlation of Xq22‐PLP1‐DEL gene content with neurological disease trait in female cases enabled refinement of the associated SROs to a single genomic interval containing six genes. Our data support the hypothesis that genes contiguous to PLP1 contribute to EONDT.  相似文献

Design.?Before-after prospective surveillance study to assess the efficacy of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) multidimensional infection control program to reduce the rate of occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Setting.?Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of INICC member hospitals from 15 cities in the following 10 developing countries: Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador, India, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Tunisia, and Turkey. Patients.?NICU inpatients. Methods.?VAP rates were determined during a first period of active surveillance without the implementation of the multidimensional approach (phase 1) to be then compared with VAP rates after implementation of the INICC multidimensional infection control program (phase 2), which included the following practices: a bundle of infection control interventions, education, outcome surveillance, process surveillance, feedback on VAP rates, and performance feedback on infection control practices. This study was conducted by infection control professionals who applied National Health Safety Network (NHSN) definitions for healthcare-associated infections and INICC surveillance methodology. Results.?During phase 1, we recorded 3,153 mechanical ventilation (MV)-days, and during phase 2, after the implementation of the bundle of interventions, we recorded 15,981 MV-days. The VAP rate was 17.8 cases per 1,000 MV-days during phase 1 and 12.0 cases per 1,000 MV-days during phase 2 (relative risk, 0.67 [95% confidence interval, 0.50-0.91]; [Formula: see text]), indicating a 33% reduction in VAP rate. Conclusions.?Our results demonstrate that an implementation of the INICC multidimensional infection control program was associated with a significant reduction in VAP rate in NICUs in developing countries.  相似文献

Objectives

The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strength of three calcium silicate cements to dentine after two different irrigation regimes.

Materials and methods

One hundred eighty 2-mm-thick root sections were prepared. The sections were divided into three main groups (n?=?60). In group A, the sections were immersed in 1 % NaOCl for 3 min. In group B, the sections were immersed in 17 % EDTA for 3 min followed by 1 % NaOCl for the same period of time. In group C (control group), no irrigation was applied to the sections. The samples from each group were divided into four subgroups (n?=?15). In subgroups A1, B1 and C1, DiaRoot BioAggregate; in subgroups A2, B2 and C2, MTA-Angelus and in subgroups A3, B3 and C3, MM-MTA were mixed with hand-mixing. In subgroups A4, B4 and C4, MM-MTA was mixed with auto-mixing. The mixed cements were then placed into cavities with a carrier. The samples were submitted to the push-out test and were loaded. All the data were analysed with one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey HSD multiple comparisons (p?<?0.05).

Results

There were no statistically significant differences between the irrigation regimes regardless of the used materials. The resistance to displacement in subgroup B4 was significantly greater than that presented by subgroups A3, B3 and C3 (p?<?0.05) while not different than all other groups.

Conclusions

Irrigation regimes had not affected the push-out bond strength of the calcium silicate cements. Also, strength of auto-mixed MM-MTA was similar to the other cements.

Clinical relevance

The novel calcium silicate cements would be a potentially useful material in endodontic procedures with favourable properties.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of conventional syringe, ultrasonic, EndoVac (Discus Dental, Culver City, CA), and Self-Adjusting File (SAF) (Re-Dent-Nova, Ra'nana, Israel) irrigation systems in removing calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]2) from simulated root canal irregularities.

Methods

The root canals of 88 extracted single-rooted teeth were prepared using ProTaper rotary instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballagiues, Switzerland) up to size F4. The roots were split longitudinally, and a standardized groove was prepared in the apical part of 1 segment. The root halves were reassembled, and Ca(OH)2 medicament was placed into the root canals using a Lentulo spiral. The roots were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups and 2 control groups according to the different irrigation systems used: conventional syringe irrigation, continuous passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), EndoVac irrigation, and SAF irrigation. Each group was then divided into 2 subgroups (n = 10) according to the irrigation protocol: subgroup 1: 10 mL 2.5% NaOCl and subgroup 2: 10 mL 17% EDTA + 10 mL 2.5% NaOCl. The amount of remaining medicament was evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 30× magnification using a 4-grade scoring system. The influences of the different Ca(OH)2 medicament removal methods and irrigation protocols were statistically evaluated using 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests.

Results

In the NaOCl-irrigated groups, PUI removed significantly more Ca(OH)2 medicament than the other techniques (P < .05). There was no significant difference among the other groups (P > .05). In the EDTA/NaOCl-irrigated groups, the SAF and PUI removed significantly more Ca(OH)2 than the other techniques (P < .05).

Conclusions

The use of the SAF system with the combination of EDTA and NaOCl enhanced Ca(OH)2 removal when compared with the use of only NaOCl irrigation with the SAF. Continuous PUI and SAF were more effective than EndoVac, and conventional syringe irrigation in the removal of the Ca(OH)2 medicament from an artificial standardized groove in the apical part of the root canal.  相似文献

Background

The sine-wave-shaped skin incision is a technique that minimizes skin-related complications near burr hole caps after electrode placement for deep-brain stimulation (DBS).

Methods

Between 2011 and 2013, 54 DBS electrodes were implanted in 27 consecutive patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor, or dystonia. The sine-wave incision was used in 26 patients and conventional bilateral linear scalp incisions were used in one patient.

Results

None of the patients whose operations involved sine-wave-shaped incisions developed hardware-linked complications such as skin infection or skin erosion. The one patient who underwent conventional bilateral linear scalp incisions developed a skin infection.

Conclusion

By preserving the vascular anatomy of the scalp and reducing skin tension at the wound site, the sine-wave-shaped incision promotes wound healing.  相似文献

This study has been conducted in order to analyze the outcomes of a previously described technique for chronic otitis media surgery: the improved radical mastoidectomy with flap (formerly IRMF), which consisted of improved radical mastoidectomy (formerly IRM), inferiorly based fascioperiosteal flap and large meatoconchoplasty (Kahramanyol, Ear Nose Throat J 71:70–77, 1992; Kahramanyol et al., Ear Nose Throat J 79:524–526, 2000). The technique is hereafter referred as the Gülhane mastoidectomy. During a period of 22 consecutive years, 255 patients have been operated on and treated utilizing the technique mentioned above. Despite extensive otologic destruction and concomitant severe complications, the technique rendered impressive outcomes: the cavities became smaller over time and remained healthy, providing good life quality for the patients. Cholesteatoma recurrence was observed in but one patient. The outcomes confirm the value and usefulness of the technique.  相似文献
