This study assesses the temporal changes in the physico-chemical behaviour of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (anatase and rutile phase) for a period of 120 h at environmentally relevant concentration of 1,000 µg/L, and the consequent impact on the microalgae population in a fresh water microcosm. The mean hydrodynamic size analysis in the medium revealed the differences in the aggregation behaviour of the two crystalline types of particles within first 12 h exposure before they had reached the micron size range. While the short term exposure (120 h) showed an immediate effect on the resident microalgae in the microcosm with respect to control, there were no significant differences in ecotoxicity effects of rutile and anatase phases of titania. The long term (90 days) exposure demonstrated a gradual recovery of the resident algal population. Summarizing the observations, the nanosized particles at low concentration may not retain the toxic potential for longer exposure time in a microcosm presumably owing to the complexity prevalent in the natural systems. 相似文献

Numerous studies showed that postural balance improves through light touch on a stable surface highlighting the importance of haptic information, seemingly downplaying the mechanical contributions of the support. The present study examined the mechanical effects of canes for assisting balance in healthy individuals challenged by standing on a beam. Sixteen participants supported themselves with two canes, one in each hand, and applied minimal, preferred, or maximum force onto the canes. They positioned the canes in the frontal plane or in a tripod configuration. Statistical analysis used a linear mixed model to evaluate the effects on the center of pressure and the center of mass. The canes significantly reduced the variability of the center of pressure and the center of mass to the same level as when standing on the ground. Increasing the exerted force beyond the preferred level yielded no further benefits, although in the preferred force condition, participants exploited the altered mechanics by resting their arms on the canes. The tripod configuration allowed for larger variability of the center of pressure in the task-irrelevant anterior–posterior dimension. High forces had a destabilizing effect on the canes: the displacement of the hand on the cane handle increased with the force. Given this static instability, these results show that using canes can provide not only mechanical benefits but also challenges. From a control perspective, effort can be reduced by resting the arms on the canes and by channeling noise in the task-irrelevant dimensions. However, larger forces exerted onto the canes can also have destabilizing effects and the instability of the canes needs to be counteracted, possibly by arm and shoulder stiffness. In the present study, silver nanoparticles were rapidly synthesized photochemically by treating silver ions with lemon (Citrus limon) extract utilizing solar radiation. The effect of time period of the day on reaction rate and nanoparticle formation was investigated in details. In the standardized process, 10?2 M silver nitrate solution was interacted for 20 min with lemon juice (2 % citric acid and 0.5 % ascorbic acid concentration) in the ratio of 1:4 (vol:vol) in the presence of sunlight. Silver nanoparticles below 50 nm with spherical and spheroidal shape were observed under electron microscopic analysis. Psychosocial conditions such as depression, intimate partner violence (IPV), and history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) have been associated with poor HIV-related outcomes. In India, which has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world, little is understood about the impact of psychosocial conditions on people living with HIV (PLHIV). We aimed to understand the prevalence and correlates of psychosocial conditions among PLHIV entering into HIV care at the Y.R. Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education in Chennai, India. Thirteen questions were added to the standard voluntary counseling and testing questionnaire, including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (a depression scale) and questions assessing for CSA and IPV. We fitted logistic regression models, stratified by gender, with psychosocial condition as the outcome of interest and substance use variables and socio-demographic variables as the correlates of interest. Three hundred and eighty-three persons were enrolled into the study; of these, 253 (66%) tested positive for HIV, including 149 men and 104 women, and were included in the models. More than one-quarter (28%) of the men and 19% of the women reported at least one psychosocial condition (probable depression, CSA, or IPV). In adjusted analysis, current alcohol use was associated with greater than two times higher odds of a psychosocial condition (Adjusted Odds Ratio?=?2.24, 95% CI, 1.04–4.85) among men. In conclusion, we estimated the prevalence of probable depression, CSA, and IPV among PLHIV presenting for HIV care in southern India and found that, among male PLHIV, alcohol use was associated with a markedly higher odds of reporting a psychosocial condition. Further study is needed to characterize alcohol use among male PLHIV and the possible deleterious impact of psychosocial conditions and alcohol use on HIV-related outcomes in India. 相似文献

A series of 2-alkoxyphenyl methanesulfonamide-based compounds were synthesised and evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. The compounds 4–7 showed comparable anti-inflammatory activity to rofecoxib and indomethacin, the standard drugs taken in both the studies. The synthesised compounds were also investigated for their gastric ulcerogenic potential and found to be non-ulcerogenic at the test doses. In silico (docking studies) were done to investigate the hypothetical binding mode of the target compounds to the cyclooxygenase isoenzyme (COX-2). A binding model has been proposed based on the docking studies to explain the observed pharmacological activity of the test compounds. Human speech is composed of two types of information, related to content (lexical information, i.e., "what" is being said [e.g., words]) and to the speaker (indexical information, i.e., "who" is talking [e.g., voices]). The extent to which lexical versus indexical information is represented separately or integrally in the brain is unresolved. In the current experiment, we use short-term fMRI adaptation to address this issue. Participants performed a loudness judgment task during which single or multiple sets of words/pseudowords were repeated with single (repeat) or multiple talkers (speaker-change) conditions while BOLD responses were collected. As reflected by adaptation fMRI, the left posterior middle temporal gyrus, a crucial component of the ventral auditory stream performing sound-to-meaning computations ("what" pathway), showed sensitivity to lexical as well as indexical information. Previous studies have suggested that speaker information is abstracted during this stage of auditory word processing. Here, we demonstrate that indexical information is strongly coupled with word information. These findings are consistent with a plethora of behavioral results that have demonstrated that changes to speaker-related information can influence lexical processing. 相似文献

To determine, in a systematic review, the diagnostic accuracy, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of less invasive autopsy by post-mortem MR imaging, in fetuses, children and adults. We searched Medline, Embase, the Cochrane library and reference lists to identify all studies comparing post-mortem MR imaging with conventional autopsy, published between January 1990 and March 2009. 539 abstracts were identified; 15 papers met the inclusion criteria; data from 9 studies were extracted (total: 146 fetuses, 11 children and 24 adults). In accurately identifying the final cause of death or most clinically significant abnormality, post-mortem MR imaging had a sensitivity and specificity of 69% (95% CI-56%, 80%) and 95% (95% CI-88%, 98%) in fetuses, and 28% (95% CI-13%, 47%) and 64% (95% CI-23%, 94%) in children and adults, respectively; however the published data is limited to small, heterogenous and poorly designed studies. Insufficient data is available on acceptability and economic evaluation of post-mortem MR imaging. Well designed, large, prospective studies are required to evaluate the accuracy of post-mortem MR imaging, before it can be offered as a clinical tool. 相似文献
