Cytokines play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of degenerative joint disease but also in inflammatory conditions as well as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A key role is attributed to interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Certain cytokines that can inhibit the activity of catabolic cytokines have great therapeutic potential and are currently being investigated in numerous clinical studies. Available scientific findings indicate that proinflammatory cytokines stimulate cartilage breakdown and blockade of these cytokines can protect the cartilage.     

Heart rate of operators with various levels of stress-tolerance]

The paper presents results of the investigation with 8 male subjects 25 to 36 y.o. attesting the existence of relation between stress tolerance evidenced from the data about tracking function during extended continuous wakefulness and the sympathetic activity assessed by heart rate values. Based on there results, the higher stress tolerance, the lower baseline sympathicotonia and the stronger sympathetic reactions to adequate stimuli.     

Conus ependymoma with holocord syringohydromyelia and syringobulbia.

We report a 24-year-old woman with an intramedullary conus ependymoma associated with holocord syringohydromyelia and syringobulbia. The tumor was removed and surgery for decompression of the syringohydromyelia was not considered at the first operation. In the follow-up examinations, MRI showed significant and steady improvement of syringohydromyelia. Symptoms associated with syringohydromyelia also disappeared. The cause of syringohydromyelia accompanying intradural spinal cord tumors appears to be either direct blockade of the central canal or secondary interruption of the central canal flow by compression of the perimedullary cerebrospinal fluid flow. As removal of the mass often corrects both these likely causes of the syringohydromyelia, no additional treatment for the drainage of the hydromyelia cavity syrinx is usually necessary.     

Liver operations in Sweden in 1987-99.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver surgery is developing with new techniques and treatment modalities. The aim of this study is to describe liver surgery over a long period of time in a country with a public health care system. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A register study including adult patients admitted for liver resection in Sweden (population 8.8 million) selected from the Inpatient Register 1987-99. Additional data were collected from the Swedish Cancer Register and the Cause of Death Register. Analyses of the patients, indications, mortality and causes of death are presented. RESULTS: 2,405 operations were performed (21 per million per year). The most frequent indication was colorectal metastases (27%). The 5-year survival after an operation for primary liver cancer and colorectal liver metastases was 27% and 26%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Few patients were admitted for liver operations compared to expected figures. The survival rates are in conformity with those previously published. With an increasing awareness of the relatively favourable prognosis and the introduction of new methods, the volume of liver operations will probably increase in Sweden.     

The tetracyclines in dermatology.

Tetracycline is one of the most widely used antibiotics. It may share some properties with conventional immunosuppressive drugs and act as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of inflammatory disease. This article reviews cutaneous diseases that have been treated with tetracyclines and their antiinflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.
