BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions to fish are a common food allergy, but IgE-binding activity to fish species have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to identify fish with high binding activity to IgE in sera from Japanese fish-hypersensitive individuals. METHODS: 38 children with a history of at least one episode of hypersensitivity after ingestion of fish were enrolled and 34 children with no history of reactions and negative IgE results for at least five kinds of fish antigen were included as controls. Using a radioallergosorbent test, we examined IgE-binding to each fish species using sera from fish-hypersensitive subjects. Fish were then graded according to IgE-binding activity. RESULTS: Many fish species, including red salmon, silver salmon, yellowfin tuna, big eyed tuna, Atlantic tuna, saurel, skipper, yellowtail, Japanese sardine, bonita and mackerel had high IgE-binding activity. All of these fish are abundantly consumed in Japan. The hypersensitivity reactions experienced by many subjects occurred after ingestion of species with high IgE-binding activity. Only halibut (Osteichthyes) and sharks (Chondrichthyes) had low IgE-binding activity. CONCLUSIONS: A correlation was observed between IgE levels and expression of symptoms after fish ingestion. High consumption of salmon, tuna, scad (including saurel), skipper, yellowtail, sardine, bonita and mackerel in Japan might be the cause of the high IgE-binding activity of these species. The grades of fish species consumed widely in Japan are likely to be useful for nutritional instruction of fish-allergic patients. 相似文献

Our previous studies revealed a considerably high level of chromosomal polymorphism in wild silkmoths, Samia cynthia ssp. (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). Geographical populations of this species complex differ in chromosome numbers and show derived sex chromosome systems including Z0/ZZ in S. cynthia ricini (2n?=?27/28; Vietnam), neo-Wneo-Z/neo-Zneo-Z in S. cynthia walkeri (2n?=?26/26; Sapporo, Hokkaido) and neo-WZ1Z2/Z1Z1Z2Z2 in S. cynthia subsp. indet. (2n?=?25/26; Nagano, Honshu). In this study, we collected specimens of S. cynthia pryeri in Japanese islands Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu, with an ancestral-like karyotype of 2n?=?28 in both sexes and a WZ/ZZ sex chromosome system, except for one population, in which females have lost the W chromosome. However, the S. cynthia pryeri W chromosome showed a very unusual morphology: It was composed of a highly heterochromatic body, which remained condensed throughout the whole cell cycle and of a euchromatin-like “tail.” We examined molecular composition of the W and neo-W chromosomes in S. cynthia subspecies by comparative genomic hybridisation and fluorescence in situ hybridisation with W chromosome painting probes prepared from laser-microdissected W chromatin of S. cynthia pryeri. These methods revealed that the molecular composition of highly heterochromatic part of the S. cynthia pryeri W chromosome is very different and lacks homology in the genomes of other subspecies, whereas the euchromatin-like part of the W chromosome corresponds to a heterochromatic part of the neo-W chromosomes in S. cynthia walkeri and S. cynthia subsp. indet. Our findings suggest that the curious WZ system of S. cynthia pryeri may represent an ancestral state of the Samia species complex but do not exclude an alternative hypothesis of its derived origin. 相似文献

Podoplanin, a transmembrane sialomucin-like glycoprotein, is a specific marker of lymphatic vessels, and its expression is also considered to be associated with tumor invasion and tooth development. In this study, we examined the expression of podoplanin in calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) in comparison with that in other so-called hard α-keratin-expressing tumors such as craniopharyngioma (CP) and pilomatrixoma (PM). Immunohistochemical staining for podoplanin was carried out using surgical specimens of 15 CCOTs of the jaw, 19 CPs of the pituitary gland, and 15 PMs of the skin. Positivity for hard α-keratin was evident in ghost, shadow and transitional cells in all of these tumors (100%). The podoplanin expression in CCOTs was evident in the periphery of ameloblastoma-like epithelium (86.6%) and the epithelial cells adjacent to ghost cells (60%). On the other hand, in adamantinomatous-type CPs, podoplanin expression was observed in epithelial components corresponding to the stratum intermedium (100%), but not in the periphery of ameloblastoma-like epithelium (0%). In squamous-type CPs podoplanin was expressed in basal cells (100%), but all of the PMs were podoplanin-negative (0%). In the periphery of the ameloblastoma-like epithelium or basophilic cell layer, podoplanin was expressed more strongly in CCOTs than in CPs or PMs. These findings suggest that the expression of podoplanin in CCOTs may reflect rapid turnover of cytoskeletal filaments and local invasiveness. 相似文献

Background/Aims: To investigate differences in clinicopathological features between proximal and distal pT3 colon cancers and to determine whether the depth of the cancer invasion beyond the muscularis propria (DBM) serves as an objective indicator of the depth of tumor invasion in proximal colon cancer and in distal colon cancer. Methodology: A total of 207 patients who underwent surgery for proximal and distal pT3 colon cancer between 1996 and 2001 were included in the analysis. Results: No differences were noted between proximal and distal cancers in lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, lymphatic/venous invasion, histological type and curability of surgical resection, although proximal cancer patients were significantly older. High-grade malignancy appeared to be more commonly noted in the proximal colon cancer cases but there was no significant difference in prognosis between proximal and distal cancer patients. Conclusions: Regarding the correlation between DBM and prognosis, there was a significant decrease in the 5-year survival rate in patients with proximal lesions of DBM 3000μm or more, and patients with distal lesions of DBM 5000μm or more. DBM is thus an objective indicator of depth of tumor invasion for both proximal and distal lesions, a prognostic factor and a guide to determining whether postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy is indicated for pT3 colon cancer cases. 相似文献

In order to study the prevalence of intestinal parasites among Japanese expatriates of developing countries, we conducted fecal specimen examinations annually from 1995 to 2000. Fecal specimens were collected from Japanese expatriates of each area: Asia, the Middle East, East Europe, Africa and Latin America. The specimens were fixed with 10% formalin in the local area, and then examined in Japan. We used the formalin-ether sedimentation method to find protozoan cysts or helminth eggs. In 1995, the infection ratio was 3.0% (N = 981), decreasing to 2.4% (N = 1,275) in 1996, 2.3% (N = 1,620) in 1997 and 1.6% (N = 1,574) in 1998. However, the ratio began to increase in 1999 (2.0%, N = 1,713) and 2000 (2.5%, N = 1,806). The ratio in Africa was the highest in each year, followed by Asia and Latin America. Heterophyidae (51 cases), Giardia lamblia (42) and Trichuris trichiura (30) were detected most frequently. In Egypt, the ratio of Heterophyidae rose by 28.8% in 2000. This was the prime reason for the increase in the overall ratio of infections worldwide. Most of the Japanese infected with Heterophyidae in Egypt had ingested dried mullet roe. This may explain the reason for the increase in the infection ratio there. Although the prevalence of intestinal parasites among Japanese expatriates in developing countries is decreasing, those who eat fish in these areas are still at risk.
