Isolation of hypoglycemic phytoconstituent from Swietenia macrophylla seeds

The present study was undertaken to isolate a novel antidiabetic molecule from Swietenia macrophylla seeds. The hydroalcohol extract of Swietenia macrophylla seeds was subjected for bioassay guided isolation employing glucose utilization assay by the isolated rat hemi‐diaphragm method in vitro. One tetranortriterpenoid, swietenine, isolated from the chloroform fraction exhibited significant (p < 0.01) activity and the effect was comparable to that of human insulin (p < 0.01). Application of Digital Image Correlation in Space and Frequency Domains to Deformation Analysis of Polymer Film

Using speckle patterns formed by an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser beam, we apply DIC (Digital Image Correlation) methods to estimate the deformation of LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) film. The laser beam was transmitted through the film specimen while a tensile machine applied a load to the specimen vertically. The transmitted laser light was projected on a screen, and the resultant image was captured by a digital camera. The captured image was analyzed both in space and frequency domains. For the space-domain analysis, the random speckle pattern was used to register the local displacement due to the deformation. For the frequency-domain analysis, the diffraction-like pattern, due to the horizontally-running, periodic groove-like structure of the film was used to characterize the overall deformation along vertical columns of analysis. It has been found that when the deformation is small and uniform, the conventional space domain analysis is applicable to the entire film specimen. However, once the deformation loses the spatial uniformity, the space-domain analysis falls short if applied to the entire specimen. The application of DIC to local (windowed) regions is still useful but time consuming. In the non-uniform situation, the frequency-domain analysis is found capable of revealing average deformation along each column of analysis.     

From the Cover: Advertisements impact the physiological efficacy of a branded drug

We conducted randomized clinical trials to examine the impact of direct-to-consumer advertisements on the efficacy of a branded drug. We compared the objectively measured, physiological effect of Claritin (Merck & Co.), a leading antihistamine medication, across subjects randomized to watch a movie spliced with advertisements for Claritin or advertisements for Zyrtec (McNeil), a competitor antihistamine. Among subjects who test negative for common allergies, exposure to Claritin advertisements rather than Zyrtec advertisements increases the efficacy of Claritin. We conclude that branded drugs can interact with exposure to television advertisements.     

Children's rights: television programmes aired in Singapore

This article focuses on aspects of children's rights as portrayed in television. The results of a six-month research study show analyses of television content of Channel 5, which is the only free-to-air, 24-hour, English-language entertainment channel in Singapore. The results identify the role of television in assisting Singapore to meet its obligations in regard to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. News and advertisements aired on Channel 5 during primetime (between 7 pm and 10 pm) were recorded over a six-month period, and those featuring or related to children were analysed for the study. The samples were categorised and subcategorised based on the principles of the Convention (UNICEF, (2011a, June 2). Convention on the rights of the child. Rights Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child): Participation, Protection, Development, and Survival. A fifth category, not under United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child-Object, was devised by the researchers. The results of this study have shown that the representation of children on television in Singapore is, in part, a reflection of how Singaporean society views children. Analyses of the media content indicated that protection and development of children was Singapore's top priority. Despite the fact that children were considered to need adult protection there was no reference to the Convention.     

Neuraxial anesthesia for labor and cesarean delivery in a parturient with hereditary antithrombin deficiency on recombinant human antithrombin infusion therapy

A recombinant human antithrombin (rhAT; generic name: antithrombin Alfa) has recently been developed. A 37 year-old parturient with hereditary antithrombin deficiency, receiving rhAT infusion therapy, who successfully received an epidural catheter for analgesia and anesthesia during labor and cesarean delivery, is presented.     

Posterior Capsular Rupture Causing Posterior Shoulder Instability: A Case Report

We report the case of a 20-year-old male competitive football player who was treated for a midsubstance posterior capsule rupture after a posterior dislocation from falling onto his shoulder. Conservative management for 5 months after the injury failed to improve his subjective symptoms, with the primary symptom being activity-related posterior shoulder pain. Advanced imaging findings and physical examination were consistent with posterior instability, thought to be due to a posterior labral tear. At the time of a diagnostic arthroscopy, the patient was found to have an oval-shaped rupture of the capsule that was neither a reverse humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament lesion nor a posterior labral tear. The capsular tear was repaired through an all-arthroscopic technique with nonabsorbable sutures. The patient returned to his previous competitive function, had no pain, and had full motion at final follow-up without recurrence of instability or pain symptoms.
