Role of a transforming growth factor beta-1 in regulation of invasive growth of prostatic adenocarcinoma

Immunohistochemical study of histological sections and immunochemical study in supernatants of primary cultures demonstrated a marked increase of the factor production in the regions of the background changes outside foci of carcinoma invasive growth. There was no difference in the type of expression of TGFbeta-I and TGFbeta-II receptors in morphologically different regions of the tumour. TGFbeta-I is considered as a principal factor that mediates hyperplastic reaction of the stroma in prostatic adenocarcinoma outside the zones of invasive growth. Formation of reactive stroma, in the authors' opinion, plays the role of a defensive mechanism hindering invasion of tumour cells into the connective tissue and its progression.     

Expression of p16INK4a in various cancer cells

The p16INK4a protein was detected by means of monoclonal antibodies to this protein in the cells of some carcinomas: that of the lungs (17 samples), urinary bladder (6 samples) and mammary gland (4 samples) as well as in the cells of three cell lines from of human uterine cervix carcinoma: SiHa (containing high risk HPV genome), C33A and HT3 (both HPV-negative but have RB mutations in RB gene). Lung carcinoma samples were very heterogenous by the part of cells expressing p16INK4a. High content of this protein was found in all 6 samples of transient cell urinary bladder carcinoma and in 1 sample of mammary gland ductal carcinoma. Cells of all three cell lines also contained p16INK4a. Thus, hyperexpression of this protein is not specific for only HPV-positive cancer of the uterine cervix. The protein presence in cancer cells seems to be an indicator of gene RB mutation or other disturbances of RB pathway.     

Monaural and binaural perception of approaching and withdrawing auditory images in humans

Radial motion of the auditory image (approach or withdrawal) was modeled with the help of two loud-speakers placed at different distances from the listener in the anechoic chamber. The thresholds of sound duration for image motion and differential thresholds for its velocity at various azimuthal angles were studied. At azimuthal angles of 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees, the threshold values of the stimulus durations were 150-200 ms. At an azimuthal angle of 90 degrees from the head midline, it increased by about 25-30% as compared to other angles. In the case of monaural listening to the signals by unilaterally deaf subjects, the threshold durations of the sound signals were two to three times higher as compared to healthy subjects. Differential thresholds for calculated velocity of the radial motion have been measured within the range 0.4-1.0 m/s, increasing with increase of the standard velocity from 3.4 to 6.9 m/s.     

The probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus--an alternative treatment of bacterial vaginosis

The probiotics or biotherapeutical agents are microorganisms that have an antagonistic activity regarding pathogens in vivo. Therapeutic application of these microorganisms is mostly in cases of infections of non-sterile mucous surfaces--vagina and large intestines. With the help of the probiotic L. acidophilus bacterial vaginosis can be treated successfully in a natural way. The lack of systemic side effects makes it a drug of choice in the treatment of pregnant women. More studies in this direction and development of new strategies for treatment of bacterial vaginosis in pregnant and non-pregnant women are needed.     

Comparison of albumin analysis by fluorescent method with other clinical laboratory parameters in purulent peritonitis

The concentration and properties of the blood-albumin linkage centers were examined by the method fluorescent probes, besides, the general clinical-and-laboratory indices in the blood serum of patients with diffusive purulent peritonitis were determined. The parameters as obtained by the method of fluorescent probes revealed a valuable information on a patients' severity condition and on a forecasted disease evolution; finally, they surpass, in a majority of cases, the generally accepted clinical-and-laboratory tests applicable to similar conditions.     

Immunohistochemical characteristics and a degree of differentiation of urinary bladder cancer

17 cases of severe dysplasia and urinary bladder intraepithelial carcinoma, 15 cases of invasive well differentiated urothelial carcinoma, 14 cases of moderately differentiated and 10 cases of poorly differentiated carcinoma were studied immunohistochemically. The role of metalloproteinases in urinary bladder carcinoma is established. Correlation between proliferative activity, protease expression and the degree of tumor differentiation is found. Viral DNA of human papilloma of 16/18 types in severe dysplasia and carcinoma in situ was revealed by hybridization in situ method.     

Intestinal metaplasia of mucosal epithelium of the urinary bladder

4 cases of urinary bladder intestinal metaplasia are reported. One adenoma and one adenocarcinoma of intestinal type were discovered. Immunohistochemically, expression of meconial intestinal antigen beta 1 MA in the cytoplasm and on the apical surface of goblet-like cells was observed.     

Comparison of determination methods and application of a computer program using a screening coordinate system to interpret hemoglobin A1c in patients with diabetes types 1 and 2

The aim of the work is to compare methods of hemoglobin A1c determination in ratio with basic metabolism indices using computer program with graphic interpretation of results in patients with diabetes of 1 and 2 types. It was found out that more specific hemoglobin determination by isoelectrofocusing method more completely reflects the state of carbohydrate metabolism in diabetic patients. The importance of hemoglobin A1c determination in case of 2 type diabetes is particularly emphasized.
