Efflorescence of new warts: a sign of onset of involution in flat warts

The sudden eruption of large numbers of tiny new warts in a patient with multiple flat warts often signals the onset of involution and subsequent regression of all flat warts. We have observed 5 such cases and, in this report, describe 2 cases in which the sudden efflorescence of many new warts was used as a sign to predict accurately the onset of involution and subsequent regression of all flat warts. Correlation of the histopathological and clinical findings provides an explanation for this phenomenon.     

P300 hemispheric amplitude asymmetries from a visual oddball task

The P3(00) event-related potential (ERP) was elicited in 80 normal, right-handed male subjects using a simple visual discrimination task, with electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded at 19 electrodes. P3 amplitude was larger over the right than over the left hemisphere electrode sites primarily at anteromedial locations (F3/4, C3/4) for target, novel, and standard stimuli. The N1, P2, and N2 components also demonstrated hemispheric asymmetries. The strongest P3 hemispheric asymmetries for all stimuli were observed at anterior locations, suggesting a frontal right hemisphere localization for initial stimulus processing, although target stimuli produced larger P3 amplitudes at parietal locations than did novel stimuli. The relationships of hemispheric asymmetries to anatomical variables, background EEG activity, and neurocognitive factors are discussed.     

CLINICAL COMPARISON OF THE BAIN AND MAGILL ANAESTHETIC SYSTEMS DURING SPONTANEOUS RESPIRATION

The Bain and Magill anaesthetic breathing systems were comparedfor spontaneous breathing during nitrous oxide in oxygen andhalothane anaesthesia. A mean fresh gas flow (Vf) of 150mlkg^–1min^–1(SD±30,range 106–250) was required with the Bain system to preventrebreathing sufficient to cause respiratory stimulation; meanfresh gas flow/expired minute volume (JVF/Vfe) was 1.49 (SD±0.32,range 0.86–2.17). Equivalent figures for the Magill attachmentwere a mean VFof 82mlkg^–1min^–1(SD±19,range43–125),while mean VF/Vfc was 0.76)(SD±0.19)range0.38–1.23,P<0.001).Theresultsattest the efficiency of the Magill attachment in termsof gas economics, and indicate the very high flows requiredto avoid respiratory stimulation in some subjects when the Bainsystem is used.     

Medical education: assessment of a regent scheme

As part of a project concerned to identify the emotional and psychological problems experienced by medical students in the Medical School of Aberdeen University and to evaluate the services organized to respond to these, the present study is an assessment of one of these services, the regent scheme.
The results of a questionnaire issued to current regents and to students in the second and third years of their course, show discrepancies in the views of the members of the two groups about selection of regents, the matching of regents and regentees, guidance offered about the use of the scheme, assessibility of regents and payment to regents. Comments from both groups indicate dissatisfaction with the scheme and also the wish to see it continue.
This study explores some of the reasons for these opinions and for the use of the scheme by only a minority of students; and shows the need for a revision of the scheme.
