The administration of diluted bee venom (DBV) into an acupuncture point has been utilized traditionally in Eastern medicine to treat chronic pain. We demonstrated previously that DBV has a potent anti-nociceptive efficacy in several rodent pain models. The present study was designed to examine the potential anti-nociceptive effect of repetitive DBV treatment in the development of below-level neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury (SCI) rats. DBV was applied into the Joksamli acupoint during the induction and maintenance phase following thoracic 13 (T13) spinal hemisection. We examined the effect of repetitive DBV stimulation on SCI-induced bilateral pain behaviors, glia expression and motor function recovery. Repetitive DBV stimulation during the induction period, but not the maintenance, suppressed pain behavior in the ipsilateral hind paw. Moreover, SCI-induced increase in spinal glia expression was also suppressed by repetitive DBV treatment in the ipsilateral dorsal spinal cord. Finally, DBV injection facilitated motor function recovery as indicated by the Basso–Beattie–Bresnahan rating score. These results indicate that the repetitive application of DBV during the induction phase not only decreased neuropathic pain behavior and glia expression, but also enhanced locomotor functional recovery after SCI. This study suggests that DBV acupuncture can be a potential clinical therapy for SCI management.  相似文献

We attempted to rescue supralethally irradiated (SLI) mice by transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) plus thymus from variously aged donors (fetus, newborn and adult). Although the transplantations of these kinds of HSCs alone showed a very short survival, newborn liver cells (NLCs) (as the source of HSCs) plus newborn thymus (NT) transplantation markedly improved the survival rate. The transplantation attenuated severe damage in the small intestine, which is one of the major causes of death by SLI. In addition, the donor-derived CD4(+) T cells significantly increased with additional NT transplantation. The production of interleukin (IL)-7 and keratinocyte growth factor, which plays a crucial role in protection against radiation injury in the intestine, was the highest in NT. Finally, SLI mice that had received NLC plus IL-7(-/-) NT transplantation plus IL-7 injection showed improved survival, weight recovery and an elevated number of CD4(+) T cells compared with the mice that had received NLC plus IL-7(-/-) NT or plus IL-7 injection alone. These findings suggest that NLCs plus NT transplantation can rescue SLI mice most effectively, and that high production of IL-7 in NT plays a crucial role with induction of CD4(+) T cells.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although pulmonary infarction is usually associated with pulmonary thromboembolism, it can occur with other disorders such as vasculitis, angioinvasive infections, sickle-cell disease, tumor embolism, and pulmonary torsion. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To identify causes and presenting features of pulmonary infarctions diagnosed by surgical biopsy in a consecutive series of patients encountered at a single institution. DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Tertiary care, referral medical center. PATIENTS: Forty-three patients with pulmonary infarction identified on surgical lung biopsy over a period of 7 years, January 1996 through December 2002. RESULTS: The median age of these 43 patients was 55 years (range, 22 to 85 years); 17 patients (40%) were women, and 26 patients (60%) were men. Thirty-five patients (81%) had a smoking history. Twenty-eight patients (65%) presented with solitary or multiple lung nodules/masses of undetermined etiology. The underlying cause was identifiable in 31 cases (72%) based on a review of clinical, laboratory, radiologic, and histopathologic data. The two most common causes were pulmonary thromboembolism (18 cases, 42%) and pulmonary infections (5 cases, 12%). Thromboembolic pulmonary infarctions typically presented as solitary or multiple nodules located in the subpleural regions. Other causes included diffuse alveolar damage in two cases (5%), pulmonary torsion in two cases (5%), and one case each of lung cancer, amyloidosis, embolotherapy, and catheter embolism. In 12 cases (28%), the underlying cause was not directly identifiable but was probably due to previous pulmonary thromboembolism. CONCLUSION: We conclude that although pulmonary thromboembolism is the most common cause of pulmonary infarction identified by surgical lung biopsy, a variety of other causes are clinically encountered, including infections, inflammatory or infiltrative lung diseases, pulmonary torsion, malignancy, and nonthrombotic embolism. Pulmonary infarction should be considered in the differential diagnosis of peripheral lung nodules or masses.  相似文献

Purpose: To evaluate swallowing function using a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), and to identify factors related to long-term swallowing function in children with swallowing dysfunction.

Methods: Ninety children, aged 1–120 months (mean 27.5 months) were randomly selected from among children referred for the evaluation of swallowing dysfunction. We retrospectively reviewed the charts, and long-term outcomes were tracked up to 5 years.

Results: Baseline American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Outcome Measurement System (ASHA NOMS) scale was 3.4?±?2.5. Supraglottic penetration and subglottic aspiration comfirmed by VFSS were detected in 30 children. After follow-up, oral feeding was possible in 74 patients, and the ASHA NOMS swallowing scale improved significantly, from 3.4?±?2.5 to 5.8?±?2.0. Baseline VFSS severity, serum albumin concentration, baseline weight percentile and neurologic conditions were significantly correlated with long-term swallowing function.

Conclusions: The long-term outcomes in children with swallowing dysfunction were favorable, and baseline videofluoroscopic severity was significantly correlated with long-term swallowing function.  相似文献

Long-term surviving recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) often suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM). We sought to identify risk factors for the development of post-transplant DM and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in pediatric HSCT patients. Glucose tolerance statuses were evaluated in 22 patients aged 6.3–21.8 years who had received allogeneic HSCT between the ages of 0.8–13.5 years. Five patients were diagnosed as having type 2 DM, and treated with insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents. Five patients were included in the IGT group, and the remaining 12 children were in the normal glucose tolerance (NGT) group. The cumulative incidence of DM plus IGT was 11.6 % at 5 years and 69.3 % at 10 years. None of the patients were obese/overweight and none had a family history of DM. There were no significant differences in serum levels of leptin and adiponectin between the DM + IGT and the NGT groups. An average preprandial glucose levels in the DM + IGT group were significantly higher than those in the NGT group from preparative conditioning to 60 days after HSCT. In multivariate analysis, an age of ≥6 years at the time of HSCT was significantly associated with the development of DM + IGT. Additionally, careful follow-up is necessary, even for NGT patients.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the inhibitory effect of anticholinergic drug oxybutynin on voltage‐dependent K+ (Kv) channels in rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells. Oxybutynin inhibited vascular Kv channels in a concentration‐dependent manner, with an IC50 value of 11.51 ± 0.38 μmol/L and a Hill coefficient (n) of 2.25 ± 0.12. Application of oxybutynin shifted the activation curve to the right and the inactivation curve to the left. Pretreatment with the Kv1.5 subtype inhibitor DPO‐1 and the Kv2.1 subtype inhibitor guangxitoxin suppressed the oxybutynin‐induced inhibition of the Kv current. However, application of the Kv7 subtype inhibitor linopirdine did not affect the inhibition by oxybutynin of the Kv current. The anticholinergic drug atropine did not inhibit the Kv current nor influence oxybutynin‐induced inhibition of the Kv current. From these results, we concluded that oxybutynin inhibited the vascular Kv current in a concentration‐dependent manner by influencing the steady‐state activation and inactivation curves independent of its anticholinergic effect.  相似文献
