Recently reported experimental studies offer insight into the various mechanisms through which dietary fiber may reduce the
risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in humans. Although most work has focused on traditional risk factors, studies have begun
to explore less studied areas of risk such as fibrinolysis. Epidemiologic results have consistently demonstrated inverse associations
between dietary fiber, particularly cereal fiber and whole grain foods, and the development of CVD morbidity and mortality.
These associations have been observed in both men and women and are not accounted for by potential confounders such as other
dietary and lifestyle factors; nor can they be fully explained by body habitus, antioxidants, and other nutrients found in
fiber-rich foods. The evidence to date supports clear recommendations for a diet based on fiber-rich foods. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have been recognized as targeting agents for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). This Phase I/II study was initiated to determine the safety, maximum tolerated dose (MTD), and therapeutic potential of (131)I-MN-14 F(ab)2 anti-CEA MAb for patients with metastatic MTC. METHODS: Fifteen patients were enrolled in this study. Dose escalation was based on estimates of radiation dose to the bone marrow, and the radioactive dose given was determined by a pretherapy diagnostic study in which 8 mCi (0.6-20 mg) of (131)I-MN-14 F(ab)2 was administered 1 week prior to therapy. RESULTS: Three patients received an initial dose of 140 centigray (cGy) to bone marrow, 11 received 180 cGy, and 1 received 220 cGy. Myelosuppression was the only significant treatment-related dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), and the MTD appeared to be 180 cGy to the bone marrow. Human antimouse antibodies (HAMA) developed in 8 patients 2-6 weeks after therapy. Seven patients had a median of 55% reduction of tumor markers. One patient showed a dramatic improvement in the mass effect on the airways caused by 3 tumor lesions in the neck, with a 45% reduction of overall tumor burden. The disease has continued to be radiologically stable in 11 of 12 assessable patients for periods ranging from 3+ to 26+ months. CONCLUSIONS: Therapy with (131)I-MN-14 F(ab)2 is well tolerated and shows evidence of biochemical and radiologic antitumor activity. HAMA development suggests that humanized MAbs will be required in trials with repeated dose schedules. Further dose escalation, alone or in combination with other therapy modalities, is indicated for future trials, preferably with humanized anti-CEA MAbs. 相似文献

The activity of urea cycle enzymes was assayed in duodenal biopsy specimens obtained from a female infant who presented with neonatal hyperammonaemia. All enzyme levels were normal except N-acetyl glutamate-dependent carbamyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS1) which was half the mean activity in normal control specimens. A similar deficiency of CPS1 was also shown in duodenal specimens from the patient's mother who became slightly symptomatic after relatively high protein meals and during pregnancy, and had spontaneously modified her diet to one with protein restriction. The patient is growing normally on a dietary regimen similar to that spontaneously adopted by her mother. Urea cycle enzyme activity in the duodenal biopsy material from the controls was similar to that found in the normal human liver and appears to have distinct advantages as a means of assaying for urea cycle defects in patients with hyperammonaemia and their relatives. 相似文献

The action of diazepam (0.0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg) and the serotonergic compounds buspirone (0.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg) and 8-OH-DPAT (0.0, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/kg) on maternal behavior and aggression were studied. An activity test was made after these treatments to control for unspecific actions due to motor impairment. Diazepam and buspirone dose-dependently inhibited the expression of maternal aggression and the active components of maternal behavior such as retrieving and nest building. 8-OH-DPAT did not affect these behaviors. 8-OH-DPAT (1.0 mg/kg) provoked the serotonergic syndrome and hypothermia; however, ovariectomized animals showed more signs of the syndrome and a decrease in body temperature after 8-OH-DPAT than lactating rats. Buspirone, but not the other anxiolytics, reduced motor activity. The role of drugs acting at the serotonergic, dopaminergic, and GABA-benzodiazepine systems in the control of maternal behavior and aggression is discussed. 相似文献

Seventy-eight children were treated for the haemolytic-uraemic syndrome complicating bacillary dysentery over a ten-year period. Early dialysis favoured survival significantly. The renal status of 22 of the 28 survivors was re-evaluated 18-84 months after initial hospitalization. ObjectiveTo examine the influence of a preventative training program (PTP) on sagittal plane kinematics during different landing tasks and vertical jump height (VJH) in males.DesignSix weeks prospective exercise intervention.ParticipantsFifteen male volleyball athletes (13 ± 0.7 years, 1.70 ± 0.12 m, 60 ± 12 kg).InterventionsPTP consisting of plyometric, balance and core stability exercises three times per week for six weeks. Bilateral vertical jumps with double leg (DL) and single leg (SL) landings were performed to measure the effects of training.Main outcome measurementsKinematics of the knee and hip before and after training and VJH attained during both tasks after training. The hypothesis was that the PTP would produce improvements in VJH, but would not generate great changes in biomechanical behavior.ResultsThe only change identified for the SL was the longest duration of landing, which represents the time spent from initial ground contact to maximum knee flexion, after training, while increased angular displacement of the knee was observed during DL. The training did not significantly alter the VJH in either the SL (difference: 2.7 cm) or the DL conditions (difference: 3.5 cm).ConclusionsDespite the PTP’s effectiveness in inducing some changes in kinematics, the changes were specific for each task, which highlights the importance of the specificity and individuality in selecting prevention injury exercises. Despite the absence of significant increases in the VJH, the absolute differences after training showed increases corroborating with the findings of statistically powerful studies that compared the results with control groups. The results suggest that short-term PTPs in low risk young male volleyball athletes may enhance performance and induce changes in some kinematic parameters. 相似文献
