The aim of the present investigation was to measure the approximal fluoride (F) concentration after using different F-containing products, either alone or in combination. Ten subjects participated on a total of 17 occasions, which were randomized, distributed and divided into two trials (called trial I and trial II). The F concentration was studied after treatment with toothpicks, dental flosses, an interdental brush dipped in 0.2 or 0.32% F gels, brushing with toothpaste containing 0.32% F and a mouthrinse with 0.2% NaF solution. The results of trial I revealed that the rinsing solution resulted in the highest approximal F values, followed by toothpicks and brushing. When brushing was combined with either flossing or toothpick, the sequence order of the two methods had less influence. However, when combined with rinsing it appeared to be better to use the floss or the toothpicks first, prior to the mouthrinse. In trial II, treatment with the gels alone, and in combination with brushing, resulted in higher approximal F concentrations compared with brushing alone. The data indicate that the order of usage when combining products may be of importance when it comes to obtaining high F levels at the approximal sites and that an interdental brush with F gel after toothbrushing may be a suitable method, called 'Inter Dental Brush Gel Method', to produce elevated F concentrations at approximal sites.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to study the prevalence of approximal caries lesions and fillings in posterior teeth at 15 years of age in a prospectively followed Swedish population (n = 568), with special reference to their caries experience at the age of 3 years. Only approximal surfaces were recorded, since all children in the Community of J?nk?ping have had fissure sealing performed on all caries-free permanent molars. At 15 years of age, the mean number of approximal tooth surfaces with initial caries lesions (D(i)a), manifest caries lesions and fillings (D(m)Fa) and total caries experience and fillings (D(i + m)Fa)--recorded on bitewing radiographs--was 2.78 , 0.45 and 3.23, respectively. One third of the adolescents had no approximal caries or fillings; the D(i)a constituted 86% of the D(i + m)Fa. Children with manifest caries at 3 years of age had a higher risk of developing approximal caries in their permanent teeth than caries-free children at the same age (41 vs. 17%). Furthermore, children who were caries-free at 3 years of age were more likely to remain caries-free at 15 years of age compared to children with manifest caries (37 vs. 17%). All these differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Additionally, early childhood caries experience (developed before 3 years of age) had a greater predictive value than late childhood caries experience (developed between 3 and 6 years of age) concerning approximal caries at 15 years of age.  相似文献

Bacterial contamination of pathology specimens can occur during collection, transport, or laboratory processing. Recognized sources of laboratory contamination include contamination of microscopy slides before use and contamination of reagents. We present 2 cases where contamination of glass beads used in the microbiology department as part of the tissue preparation process for urgent Gram stain led to unnecessary revision surgery. Contamination of the glass beads alone has not been cited elsewhere in the literature, and the authors feel that this needs to be brought to the attention of arthroplasty surgeons and microbiologists.  相似文献

Objectives

To (1) analyze caries-related factors and (2) evaluate caries risk using the Cariogram model for governmental and private orthodontic patients at de-bonding and 4?years after de-bonding.

Materials and methods

Forty orthodontic patients with mean age of 26.4?years were recruited from a governmental (G) group (n?=?20) and private (P) group (n?=?20) and were examined at de-bonding (T1) and 4?years after de-bonding (T2). The examination included a questionnaire, plaque scoring, caries examination, bitewing radiographs, and assessment of salivary secretion rate, buffering capacity and cariogenic microorganisms. The data were entered into the Cariogram program to illustrate the caries risk profiles.

Results

The chance to avoid new cavities was higher in P-group compared to G-group at T1 (58% and 31%, respectively) (P?<?0.01) and T2 (77% and 52%, respectively) (P?<?0.001). Plaque index was significantly higher in G-group, and fluoride was used significantly more in P-group at T1 and T2 (P?<?0.05). The chance to avoid new cavities was higher at T2 compared to T1 (64% and 44%, respectively) (P?<?0.001). Saliva secretion rate and buffer capacity were significantly increased, and the plaque index was significantly decreased at T2 compared to T1 (P?<?0.01).

Conclusion

According to the Cariogram, orthodontic patients were less likely to avoid new cavities at de-bonding and 4?years after de-bonding in government clinics compared to private clinics, and the caries risk significantly decreased 4?years after orthodontic treatment for all patients, regardless of the location of treatment.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyze possible indicators of: (i) relative number of decayed and filled teeth, (ii) relative number of decayed teeth, (iii) subjectively reported toothache, and (iv) sensitive teeth, and to find explanatory models for these phenomena. Independent variables from three domains were used: (i) socio-economic factors, (ii) general health and health-related lifestyle, and (iii) dental attitudes and behaviors. The study basis was validated questionnaires from all 50-year-olds in 2 Swedish counties (n = 8888), response rate 71% (n = 6343). For a 20% subsample (58% participation) the DFT and DT were determined by calibrated dentists. Analyses were done with logistic and multiple regression. The variables born outside Sweden, gender, education, shift work, satisfaction with dental care, fear and care utilization were associated with DFT/number of teeth. For DT/number of teeth, the direction of association was reversed for the variables born outside Sweden and gender. Social class, education, general health, and use of tobacco were further covariates. Good oral hygiene gave a lower ratio of DT. For the logistic regression model of toothache, residence in cities and satisfaction with dental care had lower probability for toothache reports, while born outside Sweden, mouth dryness, use of pharmaceuticals, tobacco, fear, and high utilization increased this probability. In general, the association pattern was as could be expected: immigrants, working class, low education, smoking, dissatisfaction with dental treatment and low utilization all appeared as risk factors for both the clinically determined caries indicators, but not necessarily for subjective symptom reports. Only fear of dental treatment showed a consistent positive association with all the indicators.  相似文献

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate oral rehydration therapy (ORT) products and their effect on plaque pH under normal and dry mouth conditions. Design: Three commercial oral rehydration therapy products, prepared according to the manufacturers’ instruction, plus a 10% glucose solution, which served as control, were tested in 10 healthy subjects (mean age 25 years): (1) Electral (Arrow Pharmaceuticals), (2) Resorb Junior (Nestlé) and (3) Vätskeersättning (Semper). pH was measured in the maxillary premolar region in situ with the so-called microtouch method. The area under the pH curve was calculated. Their carbohydrate content was also analysed. Results: The oral rehydration therapy products gave the same low pH values in plaque as the glucose solution. Dry mouth condition, obtained by injection of methylscopolamine nitrate in the labial sulcus, resulted in an overall more pronounced fall in pH and in a delay in the pH recovery compared with normal salivary conditions. The chemical analyses showed that all three test-products contained glucose and starch as the main carbohydrates. Conclusions: Rinsing with oral rehydration therapy products leads to a greater pH decrease in dental plaque during low compared with normal salivary conditions. As diarrhoea may result in dehydration and thereby in dry mouth, we believe that ORT products have a high cariogenic potential.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to describe the change in reported time since the latest visit to a dentist between the years 1980/81 and 1988/89 and the reported use of dental services in relation to age, dental state, and socioeconomic and health characteristics in a sample of the Swedish population in 1988/89. The studies are based on interviews by Statistics Sweden about the living conditions. In the investigations in 1980/81, 14,964 inhabitants between 16 and 84 years of age participated, and in 1988/89, 13,309 inhabitants. In all age groups there was a significantly higher frequency of reported visits to a dentist last year in 1988/89 than in 1980/81. In the age group 50-64 years old this figure increased from 54% to 75%, and in the age group 65-84 years old it increased from 26% to 39%. In the investigation in 1988/89 about 75% of the dentulous women in all age groups up to 75 years reported visiting a dentist last year. The relative risk for not visiting a dentist last year, adjusted for age, gender, and dental state, was higher in dentulous subjects with low income and education, not married, not native-born, living in rural areas, smoking, and low social and physical activity. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that, among the elderly, functional ability and general health factors have lower significance for time since last visit to a dentist than socioeconomic, social support, and life-style factors.  相似文献

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate attitudes and opinions of old, independently living people about their oral health and how it has affected them through life. Material and methods: A random selection of 12 individuals was made in a group of 79 individuals who earlier participated in a study about self‐reported oral health. The average age was 78.4 years. An interview guide was used as support to focus on oral health. The respondents themselves decided what was important within the topics. The respondents were encouraged to speak freely about their childhood, family, social relations, memories from early dental care, general health situation, experience from health care, life and their future. The interviews were recorded and extended from 60 to 90 min. All of them were transcribed and analysed with phenomenological method inspired by Giogi. The analysis was made by two researchers independently. After 11 interviews, no new information was found; similar opinions, answers and stories recurred. Results: Seven of 11 respondents were born and grown up in the countryside and had moved to Stockholm in the forties. Awareness about dental care was generally low. Many of them have terrible memories from early dental visits, and the dentist was authoritarian and rough. Many had no memories of brushing their teeth as a child. Most of the respondents went to dentists as adults and when they could afford to pay by themselves. After retirement, all have continuous dental care and have visited a dental hygienist during the last 20 years. Nine of 11 have regular contact with a dental hygienist. Most of them are satisfied with their oral health and want to continue being clean and healthy in the mouth. Conclusions: Most of the respondents experienced an improved oral health, information and instructions from the dental hygienist have affected their self‐care. Many tell that they have become more aware and carry out the oral hygiene more carefully after retirement. All of them experience that oral health affects the quality of life.  相似文献

Objectives: To clinically evaluate the prevalence of buccal caries and white spot lesions (WSLs) at debonding in governmental and private orthodontic patients, using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-II) and the DIAGNOdent Pen, and to study the correlation between the two methods.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out on the nonextracted premolars and anterior teeth of 89 orthodontic patients. They were recruited into two groups based on the treatment center they attended: governmental group (G; n  =  45) and private group (P; n  =  44). Immediately after debonding, the examination of buccal caries and WSLs on premolars and anterior teeth was carried out using the ICDAS-II and the DIAGNOdent Pen. Cross-tabulation was applied to study the correlation between the ICDAS-II index and the DIAGNOdent Pen by calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient. Results:The G group showed a significantly higher (P < .0001) prevalence of WSLs and/or buccal caries compared to that of the P group based on evaluation by the two methods. Based on ICDAS-II, 43% of the patients in the P group and 9% in the G group were free from any WSLs. In the G group, 22% of the patients had ≥16 lesions, whereas there were none for the P group. The Spearman correlation coefficient between the two methods was .71.Conclusions:The prevalence of caries and/or WSLs at debonding was significantly higher in the G group compared to the P group. The clinical index (ICDAS-II) showed a good correlation with the DIAGNOdent Pen.  相似文献
