Bimanual action requires the neural controller (internal model) for each arm to predictively compensate for mechanical interactions resulting from movement of both that arm and its counterpart on the opposite side of the body. Here, we demonstrate that the brain may accomplish this by constructing the internal model with primitives multiplicatively encoding information from the kinematics of both arms. We had human participants adapt to a novel force field imposed on one arm while both arms were moving in particular directions and examined the generalization pattern of motor learning when changing the movement directions of both arms. The generalization pattern was consistent with the pattern predicted from the multiplicative encoding scheme. As proposed by previous theoretical studies, the strength of multiplicative encoding was manifested in the observation that participants could adapt reaching movements to complicated force fields depending nonlinearly on the movement directions of both arms. These results indicate that multiplicative neuronal influence of the kinematics of the opposing arm on the internal models enables the brain to control bimanual movement by providing great flexible ability to handle arbitrary dynamical environments resulting from the interactions of both arms.  相似文献

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a relatively rare condition characterized by the excessive production and deposition of collagen within tissue. This condition is thought to be immunologically mediated and, in addition to its notorious cutaneous manifestations, often involves multiple organs. A case is presented of systemic sclerosis associated with extensive tumoural calcinosis in the temporomandibular joint. There has been no evidence of recurrence or complications during approximately 2 years of follow up, but long-term follow up is essential.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the diagnostic performance of radiography for the detection of MRI-detected osteoarthritis-associated features in various articular subregions of the hip joint.

Materials and methods

Forty-four patients with chronic hip pain (mean age, 63.3?±?9.5 years), who were part of the Hip Osteoarthritis MRI Scoring (HOAMS) cohort, underwent both weight-bearing anteroposterior pelvic radiography and 1.5 T MRI. The HOAMS study was a prospective observational study involving 52 subjects, conducted to develop a semiquantitative MRI scoring system for hip osteoarthritis features. In the present study, eight subjects were excluded because of a lack of radiographic assessment. On radiography, the presence of superior and medial joint space narrowing, superior and inferior acetabular/femoral osteophytes, acetabular subchondral cysts, and bone attrition of femoral head was noted. On MRI, cartilage, osteophytes, subchondral cysts, and bone attrition were evaluated in the corresponding locations. Diagnostic performance of radiography was compared with that of MRI, and the area under curve (AUC) was calculated for each pathological feature.

Results

Compared with MRI, radiography provided high specificity (0.76–0.90) but variable sensitivity (0.44–0.78) for diffuse cartilage damage (using JSN as an indirect marker), femoral osteophytes, acetabular subchondral cysts and bone attrition of the femoral head, and a low specificity (0.42 and 0.58) for acetabular osteophytes. The AUC of radiography for detecting overall diffuse cartilage damage, marginal osteophytes, subchondral cysts and bone attrition was 0.76, 0.78, 0.67, and 0.82, respectively.

Conclusions

Diagnostic performance of radiography is good for bone attrition, fair for marginal osteophytes and cartilage damage, but poor for subchondral cysts.  相似文献

Series cross-section images of the upper extremity were obtained for four men by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and anatomical cross-sectional areas (ACSA) of elbow flexor muscles [biceps brachii (BIC), brachialis (BRA), brachioradialis (BRD)] and extensor muscles [triceps brachii (TRI)] were measured. Physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) was calculated from the muscle volume and muscle fibre length, the former from the series ACSA and the latter from the muscle length multiplied by previously reported fibre/muscle length ratios. Elbow flexion/extension torque was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer and the force at the tendons was calculated from the torque and moment arms of muscles measured by MRI. Maximal ACSA of TRI was comparable to that of total flexors, while PCSA of TRI was greater by 1.9 times. Within flexors, BRA had the greatest contribution to torque (47%), followed by BIC (34%) and BRD (19%). Specific tension related to the estimated velocity of muscle fibres were similar for elbow flexors and extensors, suggesting that the capacity of tension development is analogous between two muscle groups.  相似文献
