Young men's health: a balance between self-reliance and vulnerability in the light of hegemonic masculinity

Masculinity, in its hegemonic form, can have the effect that men avoid talking about health problems and do not consult health care, even when help is needed. This study had two aims: firstly to describe how young men relate to health, ill health, masculinity and their bodies, and secondly to investigate their abilities of self-care. Interviews with eleven men were conducted using a semi-structured approach. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the transcribed interviews. The findings revealed five main themes; 'body awareness', 'the creation of self-reliance', 'feelings of freedom', 'the process of self-care awareness' and, finally, 'feelings of vulnerability'. Hegemonic masculinity impacted greatly on the men in this study and could be traced in expressions of dependency, vulnerability, loss of freedom and an altered body image. These were viewed as health disadvantages due to the threat to hegemonic masculinity.     

Abortion, metaphysics and morality: a review of Francis Beckwith's defending life: a moral and legal case against abortion choice

In Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice (2007) and an earlier article in this journal, "Defending Abortion Philosophically"(2006), Francis Beckwith argues that fetuses are, from conception, prima facie wrong to kill. His arguments are based on what he calls a "metaphysics of the human person" known as "The Substance View." I argue that Beckwith's metaphysics does not support his abortion ethic: Moral, not metaphysical, claims that are part of this Substance View are the foundation of the argument, and Beckwith inadequately defends these moral claims. Thus, Beckwith's arguments do not provide strong support for what he calls the "pro-life" view of abortion.     

The efficacy of the intra-aortic balloon pump for patients with heart failure complicating acute myocardial infarction (author's transl)]

Assisted circulation was carried out with the help of an intra-aortic balloon pump in 22 patients with acute transmural myocardial infarction and heart failure (despite medication). Two patients died in hospital. The combination of the balloon pump and nitrates proved to be particularly effective. The follow-up examination of the survivors showed a distinct pulmonary arterial pressure during ergometry. All of the examined patients revealed extensive akinetic and diskinetic areas, significant stenosis being detectable either in the proximal area of the Ramus descendens anterior or in two or three blood vessels.     

Radial distribution of white cells during blood flow in small tubes

The radial distribution of white blood cells (WBC) in blood flowing through glass tubes (i.d. 69 micron) was studied as a function of wall shear stress (range 0.1-2.5 Pa) and suspending medium (plasma, buffered saline, high-molecular-weight dextran solution). It was found that, irrespective of the choice of suspending medium, the highest leukocyte flux at high shear stresses was found in the tube center. WBC redistribution was seen upon lowering the shear stresses: A significant shift of WBC flux toward the marginal fluid layers occurred at the expense of the axial region. After replacement of plasma by other media the flow-dependent redistribution of WBCs was qualitatively unaffected. However, suspension of cells in dextran solution (inducing strong red cell aggregation) resulted in enhanced WBC margination, while in saline (no red cell aggregation) axial accumulation was accentuated. The results support the concept of size-dependent radial distribution of particles in flow of mixed suspensions. If applied to the living microcirculation, the data serve to explain WBC margination in microvessels (the first step in the series of events leading to emigration) in terms of a hydrodynamic phenomenon resulting from red cell/white cell interaction. The pronounced flow dependence of WBC margination results primarily from the effect of shear on red cell aggregation which leads to an alteration of the effective particle size distribution in the flowing blood.     

Masculinity and urogenital cancer: sensitive issues in health care

The aim of this literature review was to analyse the approaches adopted by patients, health professionals, spouses and other care-givers towards sensitive issues related to male urogenital cancer, and to describe how these findings can be applied in health care practice. The findings revealed five identifiable domains, namely 'the barrier to talking', 'the barrier of sensitivity', 'the barrier of masculinity', 'the barrier to seeking health care' and 'the communicative barrier'. The conclusion was that the phenomenon of a barrier is strongly connected with hegemonic masculinity. The review of literature confirmed that, for many men, talking about genitally-related health problems is not easy and that health care professionals need to learn more about gender and masculinity in order to address urogenitally sensitive issues.     

Poly(arylazophosphonate)s: New Arylazophosphonate‐Containing Monomers for Synthesis of Laser‐Structurable Polymers

In this paper we report the preparation of new hydroxy‐functionalized arylazophosphonate‐containing monomers for the synthesis of poly(arylazophosphonate)s by means of a polycondensation reaction with suitable comonomers (e. g., isocyanates, acid chlorides). The monomers were synthesized from hydroxy‐functional diazonium salts and bifunctional phosphoric diesters via N—P coupling reactions. Six new monomers were synthesized, and in addition four poly(arylazophosphonate)s have been prepared by polycondensation techniques using diisocyanate comonomers. Monomers, as well as polymers, were characterized by common methods such as ¹H, ¹³C and ³¹P NMR, FT‐IR and UV/visible spectroscopies, DSC and GPC measurements. In addition, an example of the polymer structuring via laser ablation with a XeCl excimer laser is given.
