INTRODUCTION: Pseudohyponatraemia is uncommonly associated with severe hypercholesterolaemia. Severe hypercholesterolaemia encountered in obstructive jaundice due to an abnormal lipoprotein, lipoprotein X (LpX), may result in pseudohyponatraemia. CASE REPORT: We report a case of falsely low sodium measurements in a patient with severe hypercholesterolaemia due to obstructive liver disease. The pathophysiology, complications and analytical effects of LpX are briefly discussed. CONCLUSION: The possibility of pseudohyponatraemia should be considered in severely hypercholesterolaemic samples.  相似文献

Background

High linearities, sensitivities, and low oxygen dependence constitute prime requisites for electrochemical glucose sensors. However, for implantable sensors the need to control tissue inflammation requires the use outer membranes that permit inward analyte diffusion while continuously releasing anti-inflammatory drugs and other tissue response-modifying (TRM) agents. We have shown previously that while outer membranes based on layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly enhance linearity, poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) hydrogels loaded with TRM-containing microspheres enable a significant reduction in tissue inflammation. This article discusses amperometric performance of glucose sensors coated with stacked LBL/PVA hydrogel outer membranes.

Methods

Sensors were fabricated by immobilizing glucose oxidase enzyme on a 50-μm platinum wire followed by deposition of stacked LBL/PVA hydrogel outer membranes. The sensor response to various glucose concentrations was determined by applying 0.7 V vs an Ag/AgCl reference electrode in phosphate-buffered saline (37°C). Michaelis–Menten analysis was performed to quantify sensor performance in terms of linearity (Km,gluapp) and oxygen dependence (Km,O2app/[Glucose]).

Results

When overlaid onto LBL-assembled outer membranes, PVA hydrogels improved sensor linearity by 60% from 10 to 16 mM of glucose and resulted in a twofold decrease in oxygen dependence.

Conclusions

Enhancement in the performance of a PVA-coated sensor is attributed to the oxygen-storing capability of PVA hydrogel due to the formation of hydrophobic domains during its freezing and thawing employed to physical cross-link the PVA. Such membranes with the capability to release TRMs continuously while storing oxygen constitute a major improvement over current outer membrane technologies.  相似文献

Adolescence is a risk period for offending and for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and TBI is a risk factor for poor mental health and for offending. TBI has been largely neglected from guidance on managing the mental health needs of young offenders. We sought to determine the rate of self-reported TBI, of various severities, in a male, adolescent youth offending population. We also aimed to explore whether TBI was associated with number of convictions, violent offending, mental health problems and drug misuse. Young male offenders aged 11 to 19 years were recruited from a Young Offender Institute, a Youth Offending Team and a special needs school. A total of 197 participants were approached and 186 (94.4%) completed the study. They completed self-reports on TBI, crime history, mental health and drug use. TBI with loss of consciousness (LOC) was reported by 46% of the sample. LOC consistent with mild TBI was reported by 29.6%, and 16.6% reported LOC consistent with moderate to severe TBI. Possible TBI was reported by a further 19.1%. Repeat injury was common - with 32% reporting more than one LOC. Frequency of self-reported TBI was associated with more convictions. Three or more self-reported TBIs were associated with greater violence in offences. Those with self-reported TBI were also at risk of greater mental health problems and of misuse of cannabis. TBI may be associated with offending behaviour and worse mental health outcomes. Addressing TBI within adolescent offenders with neurorehabilitative input may be important for improving well-being and reducing re-offending.  相似文献

Differences in neural activation during performance on an attentionally demanding Stroop task were examined between 23 young adults with ADHD carefully selected to not be co-morbid for other psychiatric disorders and 23 matched controls. A hybrid blocked/single-trial design allowed for examination of more sustained vs. more transient aspects of attentional control. Our results indicated neural dysregulation across a wide range of brain regions including those involved in overall arousal, top-down attentional control, response selection, and inhibition. Furthermore, this dysregulation was most notable in lateral regions of DLPFC for sustained attentional control and in medial areas for transient aspects of attentional control. Because of the careful selection and matching of our two groups, these results provide strong evidence that the neural systems of attentional control are dysregulated in young adults with ADHD and are similar to dysregulations seen in children and adolescents with ADHD.  相似文献
