Summary The activity of vancomycin and Ly333328, a new semisynthetic glycopeptide, against eight strains ofStaphylococcus aureus showing various susceptibilities to methicillin and, ciprofloxacin was examined using a colony count method. We compared
the growth of strains ingested by polymorphonuclear leukocytes and non-ingested strains. MICs of vancomycin and Ly333328 against
staphylococci resistant and susceptible to methicillin were 2 mg/l and 2–4 mg/l, respectively. Against all the tested extracellular
staphylococci, vancomycin had only bacteriostatic activity, whereas Ly333328 showed cidal activity at 10 MIC. Against ingested
staphylococci, vancomycin had nearly no activity compared with the controls, regardless of the concentration of the drug.
Ly333328 at concentrations of 1 MIC and above was highly active against ingested staphylococci regardless of their susceptibility
pattern. The results suggest that Ly333328 in contrast to vancomycin is active against intracellularS. aureus. 相似文献

- Coronary stents are commonly deployed using high pressure. However, the duration time of balloon inflation during deployment is still to be determined.
- Vallurupalli and coworkers, in this issue of CCI, show that the stent system takes an average of 33 sec to “accommodate” its pressure during in vitro deployment. In patients, the mean stent inflation time to achieve pressure stability was 104 seconds, ranging from 30 to 380 sec.
- These results challenge a rapid inflation/deflation approach for stent deployment. It is suggested that the duration of the inflation might be individualized, in a case‐by‐case approach.
- However, the findings must be interpreted with caution, as they cannot be directly extrapolated to more diverse clinical, angiographic, and interventional scenarios.

The use of testosterone to treat the symptoms of late-onset hypogonadal men has increased recently due to patient and physician awareness. However, concerns regarding the effect of testosterone on the prostate, in particular any possible effect on the risk of prostate cancer have prompted further research in this regard. Surprisingly, numerous retrospective or small, randomized trials have pointed to a possible improvement in male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients treated with testosterone. The exact mechanism of this improvement is still debated but may have a close relationship to metabolic syndrome. For the clinician, the results of these studies are promising but do not constitute high levels of evidence. A thorough clinical examination (including history, examination and laboratory testing of testosterone) should be undertaken before considering the diagnosis of late-onset hypogonadism or instigating treatment for it. Warnings still remain on the testosterone supplement product labels regarding the risk of urinary retention and worsening LUTS, and these should be explained to patients. 相似文献

Objectives:To investigate the relationship between a prostasin gene variations and the development of preeclampsia in a Pakistani female population.Methods:This was a case-control study carried out at University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan between May 2018 and 2019. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at rs12597511 locus was examined with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses in 76 preeclamptic and 74 normotensive expecting mothers.Results:We observed significantly increased risk of preeclampsia associated with the CC genotype of rs12597511 polymorphism as compared to TT (p<0.001, OR=8.08, 95% CI:1.28-31.19) and TT/TC (p<0.001, OR=14.66 and 95% CI: 3.31-65.07) genotypes carriers. Calculation of the allelic distribution revealed a higher frequency of the T allele (82%) among controls; however, the C allele was more prevalent in the preeclamptic group (36%) significantly.Conclusion:The significantly higher C allele frequency in the prostasin gene at the rs12597511 locus in the preeclamptic group indicates that the distribution of the C allele of the prostasin gene is a potential risk factor contributing to the development of preeclampsia. 相似文献
