Saffron (Crocus sativus) is an extensively used food additive for its color and taste. Since ancient times this plant has been introduced as a marvelous medicine throughout the world. The wide spectrum of saffron pharmacological activities is related to its major constituents including crocin, crocetin and safranal. Based on several studies, saffron and its active ingredients have been used as an antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antinociceptive, antidepressant, antitussive, anticonvulsant, memory enhancer, hypotensive and anticancer. According to the literatures, saffron has remarkable therapeutic effects. The protective effects of saffron and its main constituents in different tissues including brain, heart, liver, kidney and lung have been reported against some toxic materials either natural or chemical toxins in animal studies.In this review article, we have summarized different in vitro and animal studies in scientific databases which investigate the antidotal and protective effects of saffron and its major components against natural toxins and chemical-induced toxicities. Due to the lake of human studies, further investigations are required to ascertain the efficacy of saffron as an antidote or a protective agent in human intoxication.  相似文献

Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease that is still to be fully understood. In female breast cancer, molecular subtyping by gene expression has proven its significance. In this study, we characterize a consecutive cohort of MBC patients surgically treated from 1997 to 2017, identified at our institution (N = 37), and report the association between molecular subtypes found by a surrogate panel of immunohistochemical (IHC) markers, and the PAM50 signature, as well as risk of recurrence score and overall survival for the different subtypes. PAM50 subtypes were determined using the nCounter FLEX system instrument and software. The distribution of molecular subtypes according to the PAM50 signature was as follows: 56% luminal B, 39% luminal A, and 5% basal-like. None of the tumors were HER2-enriched. Using IHC surrogate markers, we found 80% luminal B-like, 15% luminal A-like, and 5% basal-like. None were HER2-positive (non-luminal). We found a strong statistical association between subtypes found by PAM50 signature and the IHC surrogate markers (p < 0.001). Furthermore, we found luminal A tumors to be smaller in size compared to luminal B tumors (p = 0.04). Patients with luminal A subtype tumors had the lowest ROR scores with a mean of 39, whereas patients with luminal B subtype tumors had a mean ROR score of 69. Significant worse overall survival for luminal B tumors compared to luminal A tumors was seen (p = 0.02). Male breast cancer seems to be a mainly luminal disease, with luminal B being the most frequent subtype. Further studies are needed to ensure correct therapeutic strategies for this select group of patients.  相似文献

It has been suggested that cysteinyl-containing leukotrienes (LT) are important mediators in bronchial asthma. Since leukotrienes have been shown to mediate the leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) phenomenon observed in cancer-bearing host we have devised a modified LAI assay which determines the acquisition of non-adherence properties of leukocytes following a challenge with pure synthetic LT. Our results demonstrate that peripheral blood leukocytes of asthmatic individuals acquire non-adherence properties when challenged with pure synthetic leukotriene C4 and D4, a property not shared by peripheral blood leukocytes of control healthy individuals. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LT activity as manifested by the LAI assay is dependent on cycloxygenase products, since 2×10−6 M Indomethacin abrogated the LT-induced LAI and is restored by the addition of 2×10−6 M prostaglandin E2 which is also synergistic to LT activity. Our results further suggest the possibility that leukotriene activity is dependent on calcium ions since it was negated by known calcium antagonists. It is thus suggested that the LT-induced LAI may serve as a tool for the study of the interrelationship between the metabolic pathways of arachidonic acid and calcium ion homeostasis.  相似文献

Two low ionic strength-dependent autoagglutinins were studied and found to have anti-Pr1 specificity. This specificity was determined by studies with enzyme-treated and neuraminidase-treated human red blood cells (RBCs), animal RBCs and chemically-modified sialoglycoproteins, all suspended in a low ionic strength solution (LISS). Both IgM complement-binding cold agglutinins had a wide thermal range and caused in vitro hemolysis of some LISS-suspended RBCs at 37 degrees C. Compatible blood was found for these patients by using techniques that did not employ LISS.  相似文献

Although few women sustain thermal injuries during pregnancy, when pregnancy is complicated by thermal injury a clear management scheme plus a team approach is needed to provide optimal care both to the foetus and mother. The clinical course of eight pregnant women treated in our burn unit is presented. The relationship between the burn area, gestational age at treatment and prognosis is analysed. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia are the major symptoms of the disease. These motor impairments are often accompanied by affective and emotional dysfunctions which have been largely studied over the last decade. The aim of this study was to investigate emotional processing organization in the brain of patients with Parkinson's disease and to explore whether there are differences between recognition of different types of emotions in Parkinson's disease. We examined 18 patients with Parkinson's disease(8 men, 10 women) with no history of neurological or psychiatric comorbidities. All these patients underwent identical brain blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging for emotion evaluation. Blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging results revealed that the occipito-temporal cortices, insula, orbitofrontal cortex, basal ganglia, and parietal cortex which are involved in emotion processing, were activated during the functional control. Additionally, positive emotions activate larger volumes of the same anatomical entities than neutral and negative emotions. Results also revealed that Parkinson's disease associated with emotional disorders are increasingly recognized as disabling as classic motor symptoms. These findings help clinical physicians to recognize the emotional dysfunction of patients with Parkinson's disease.  相似文献
