Acoustic biast trauma

A 50-year old male presented with swollen right eyelids, bleeding per nostrils and a vague left post-auricular swelling for 4 months. Posterior rhinoscopy revealed one pinkish polypoidal mass in the posterior nare and roof of nasopharynx. FNAC from the post-auricular swelling suggested metastatic undifferentiated carcinoma. Incisional biopsy was done form the nasopharynx and histopathological examination proved it to be a malignant paraganglioma. The case is reported for its rarity.     

Reliability of a Store Observation Tool in Measuring Availability of Alcohol and Selected Foods

Alcohol and food items can compromise or contribute to health, depending on the quantity and frequency with which they are consumed. How much people consume may be influenced by product availability and promotion in local retail stores. We developed and tested an observational tool to objectively measure in-store availability and promotion of alcoholic beverages and selected food items that have an impact on health. Trained observers visited 51 alcohol outlets in Los Angeles and southeastern Louisiana. Using a standardized instrument, two independent observations were conducted documenting the type of outlet, the availability and shelf space for alcoholic beverages and selected food items, the purchase price of standard brands, the placement of beer and malt liquor, and the amount of in-store alcohol advertising. Reliability of the instrument was excellent for measures of item availability, shelf space, and placement of malt liquor. Reliability was lower for alcohol advertising, beer placement, and items that measured the “least price” of apples and oranges. The average kappa was 0.87 for categorical items and the average intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.83 for continuous items. Overall, systematic observation of the availability and promotion of alcoholic beverages and food items was feasible, acceptable, and reliable. Measurement tools such as the one we evaluated should be useful in studies of the impact of availability of food and beverages on consumption and on health outcomes.     

抗癌药物对心脏毒性反应(附五例报告)

本文报道五例肿瘤患者在用抗癌药的治疗过程中,出现对心脏不同程度的毒性反应,并就有关几种抗癌药物的毒性作用机理及防治进行了讨论。     

Patterns of spectrin expression in B-cell lymphomas: loss of spectrin isoforms is associated with nodule-forming and germinal center-related lymphomas.

Spectrins are a family of cytoskeletal proteins that organize and link membranes to subcellular motors and filaments. Although traditionally divided into erythroid and non-erythroid forms, the discovery of new spectrin isoforms in various tissues indicates that their distribution is not yet fully characterized. To our knowledge, there is no comprehensive analysis of spectrins in lymphoid malignancies. Using tumor microarrays of paraffin blocks, we immunohistochemically studied 10 lymph nodes with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia and 94 lymph nodes involved by B-cell malignant lymphoma. Expression of spectrins alphaI, alphaII, betaI, betaII, and betaIII was scored using a 20% cutoff for positive immunoperoxidase staining. All spectrin isoforms, except erythroid-specific alphaI spectrin, were detected in lymph nodes with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. In contrast, various spectrins were lost in particular B-cell malignant lymphomas. Based on the absence of staining for one or more spectrin isoforms in at least 50% of cases, we identified three patterns: (1) loss of alphaII and betaII in follicular lymphoma, grades 2/3 and 3/3; nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's lymphoma; nodular sclerosis Hodgkin's lymphoma; (2) loss of betaI only in Burkitt lymphoma; and (3) loss of alphaII and betaI in mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma. In contrast, follicular lymphoma, grade 1/3 and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma retained spectrin in 67-100% of cases. The other lymphoma subtypes retained spectrin in greater than 50% of cases. We identified the loss of particular spectrin isoforms in B-cell malignant lymphomas that have a nodular growth pattern and/or are believed to arise from germinal center B-cells, that is follicular lymphoma, grades 2/3 and 3/3; Burkitt lymphoma; nodular sclerosis Hodgkin's lymphoma; mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma; and nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's lymphoma. The absence of particular spectrin isoforms may correlate with transformation or aggressive biologic behavior for some lymphoma subtypes.     

肺吸虫病抗体水平与γ—球蛋白关系的研究

应用聚丙烯酰胺凝胶平板电泳(PAGE)技术检测家兔实验肺吸虫病血清中各种蛋白的分辨力较醋酸纤维薄膜电泳为高,表现蛋白区带(13条)增多及其各组分含量的变化,以Densiscan 光密度仪扫描可见其感染后4,5个月抗体水平明显上升,主要是电泳谱型中 DEF(γ)的平均比移率范围最宽(12.64～31.61%),蛋白含量平均增多7.89%,为正常兔的0.95～1.24倍,差异显著(P<0.05)。     

PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF PENTAGASTRIN AGAINST STRESS-INDUCED GASTRIC LESIONS IN RATS

The rats, pretreated with pentagastrin, 250 Vg/kg, daily for 7 days, were given restraint water immer sion stress for 3 hours and observed for lesion index of the gastric mucosa. The results showed that the lesion index of the pentagastrin group was sig- nificantly decreased as compared with that of the control group. Light and electron microscopically, the mucosal layer was thickened and both the chief cells and parietal cells were in an active state. This suggests that gastrin has protective effects against the stress-induced gastric lesions through its trophic action on the gastrointestinal tract.
