The perception of sound textures, a class of natural sounds defined by statistical sound structure such as fire, wind, and rain, has been proposed to arise through the integration of time-averaged summary statistics. Where and how the auditory system might encode these summary statistics to create internal representations of these stationary sounds, however, is unknown. Here, using natural textures and synthetic variants with reduced statistics, we show that summary statistics modulate the correlations between frequency organized neuron ensembles in the awake rabbit inferior colliculus (IC). These neural ensemble correlation statistics capture high-order sound structure and allow for accurate neural decoding in a single trial recognition task with evidence accumulation times approaching 1 s. In contrast, the average activity across the neural ensemble (neural spectrum) provides a fast (tens of milliseconds) and salient signal that contributes primarily to texture discrimination. Intriguingly, perceptual studies in human listeners reveal analogous trends: the sound spectrum is integrated quickly and serves as a salient discrimination cue while high-order sound statistics are integrated slowly and contribute substantially more toward recognition. The findings suggest statistical sound cues such as the sound spectrum and correlation structure are represented by distinct response statistics in auditory midbrain ensembles, and that these neural response statistics may have dissociable roles and time scales for the recognition and discrimination of natural sounds.

What makes a sound natural, and what are the neural codes that support recognition and discrimination of real-world natural sounds? Although it is known that the early auditory system decomposes sounds along fundamental acoustic dimensions such as intensity and frequency, the higher-level neural computations that mediate natural sound recognition are poorly understood. This general lack of understanding is in part attributed to the structural complexity of natural sounds, which is difficult to study with traditional auditory test stimuli, such as tones, noise, or modulated sequences. Such stimuli can reveal details of the neural representation for relatively low-level acoustic cues, yet they don’t capture the rich and diverse statistical structure of natural sounds. Thus, they cannot reveal many of the computations associated with higher-level sound properties that facilitate auditory tasks such as natural sound recognition or discrimination. A class of stationary natural sounds termed textures, such as the random sounds emanating from a running stream, a crowded restaurant, or a chorus of birds, have been proposed as alternative natural stimuli which allow for manipulating high-level acoustic structure (1). Texture sounds are composed of spatially and temporally distributed acoustic elements that are collectively perceived as a single source and are defined by their statistical features. Identification of these natural sounds has been proposed to be mediated through the integration of time-averaged summary statistics, which account for high-level structures such as the sparsity and time-frequency correlation structure found in many natural sounds (13). Using a generative model of the auditory system to measure summary statistics from natural texture sounds, it is possible to synthesize highly realistic synthetic auditory textures (1). This suggests that high-order statistical cues are perceptually salient and that the brain might extract these statistical features to build internal representations of sounds.Although neural activity throughout the auditory pathway is sensitive to a variety of statistical cues such as the sound contrast, modulation power spectrum, and correlation structure (412), how sound summary statistics contribute toward basic auditory tasks such as recognition and discrimination of sounds is poorly understood. Furthermore, it is unclear where along the auditory pathway summary statistics are represented and how they are reflected in neural activity. The inferior colliculus (IC) is one candidate midlevel structure for representing such summary statistics. As the principal midbrain auditory nucleus, the IC receives highly convergent brainstem inputs with varied sound selectivities. Neurons in the IC are selective over most of the perceptually relevant range of sound modulations and neural activity is strongly driven by multiple high-order sound statistics (47, 10). In previous work, we showed the correlation statistics of natural sounds are highly informative about stimulus identity and they appear to be represented in the correlation statistics of auditory midbrain neuron ensembles (4). Correlations between neurons have also been proposed as mechanisms for pitch identification (13) and sound localization (14). This broadly supports the hypotheses that high-order sound statistics are reflected in the response statistics of neural ensembles and that these neural response statistics could potentially subserve basic auditory tasks.Here using natural and synthetic texture sounds, we test the hypothesis that statistical structure in natural texture sounds modulates the response statistics of neural ensembles in the IC of unanesthetized rabbits, and that distinct neural response statistics have the potential to contribute toward sound recognition and discrimination behaviors. By comparing the performance of neural decoders with human texture perception, we find that place rate representation of sounds (neural spectrum) accumulates evidence about the sounds on relatively fast time scales (tens of milliseconds) exhibiting decoding trends that mirror those seen for human texture discrimination. High-order statistical sound cues, by comparison, are reflected in the correlation statistics of neural ensembles, which require substantially longer evidence accumulation times (>500 ms) and follow trends that mirror those measured for human texture recognition. Collectively, the findings suggest that spectrum cues and accompanying place rate representation (neural spectrum) may contribute surprisingly little toward the recognition of auditory textures. Instead, high-order statistical sound structure is reflected in the distributed patterns of correlated activity across IC neural ensembles and such neural response structure has the potential to contribute toward the recognition of natural auditory textures.  相似文献

Background:

No data on the incidence of pleural effusion (PE) in Chinese patients with pulmonary embolism are available to date. The aim of the current study was to investigate the frequency of PE in a Chinese population of patients with pulmonary embolism.

Methods:

This was a retrospective observational single-center study. All data of computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) performed over 6-year period on adult patients with clinically suspected pulmonary embolism were analyzed.

Results:

From January 2008 until December 2013, PE was identified in 423 of 3141 patients (13.5%) with clinically suspected pulmonary embolism who underwent CTPA. The incidence of PE in patients with pulmonary embolism (19.9%) was significantly higher than in those without embolism (9.4%) (P < 0.001). Majority of PEs in pulmonary embolism patients were small to moderate and were unilateral. The locations of emboli and the numbers of arteries involved, CT pulmonary obstruction index, and parenchymal abnormalities at CT were not associated with the development of PE.

Conclusions:

PEs are present in about one fifth of a Chinese population of patients with pulmonary embolism, which are usually small, unilateral, and unsuitable for diagnostic thoracentesis.  相似文献

目的探讨磁共振化学位移成像技术评估绝经后女性椎体骨髓脂肪含量的可行性。方法选取56例绝经后女性患者的腰椎1~4椎体(共计224个椎体),所有患者均行磁共振化学位移成像和双能X线吸收法骨密度测定,得出每个椎体信号下降指数和骨密度值,按照骨密度T分数分为骨量正常组,骨量减少组和骨质疏松组,分析三组椎体信号下降指数的差异,探讨不同骨密度组椎体信号下降指数的变化规律。结果 56例患者224个椎体按照T分数进行分组,骨量正常组68个,骨量减少组72个,骨质疏松组84个,骨量正常组,骨量减少组和骨质疏松组椎体信号下降指数的中位数分别是60.57%(67.86%~45.34%),58.22%(69.29%~49.49%),56.80%(67.52%~36.00%),骨质疏松组同正常组、骨量减少组比较具有统计学差异(P<0.05),正常组、骨量减少组比较无统计学差异(P>0.05)。结论磁共振化学位移成像通过测定椎体下降指数可以反映椎体脂肪含量的变化,对骨质疏松做出诊断,具有较高的应用价值。  相似文献

Objective: NF-κB signaling plays a central role in the regulation of inflammatory responses in atherosclerosis. R65 ribozyme gene suppresses activation of NF-κB pathway, therefore we studied whether R65 gene therapy can ameliorate oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) injury. Methods and results: Recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (rAVV9) vector was used to transfect the R65 ribozyme gene (rAVV9-R65) into HUVECs then following ox-LDL stimulation, expression of NF-κB p65 and p50 subunits, inflammatory mediators and cell apoptosis were examined. First, rAVV9-enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP)-R65 at 1×107 v.g./cell multiplicity of infection reached a long-lasting and significant increase in R65 gene expression. Second, ox-LDL treatment led to time- and dose-dependent activation of NF-κB pathway, and enhanced inflammatory response and cell death evidenced by increased expression of nuclear NF-κB p65 and p50 subunits, greater production of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-6 and von willebrand factor and 20.57% increasedapoptotic HUVECs. Third, over-expression ofR65 gene was 2-fold increased in HUVECs attenuated ox-LDL induced unclear accumulation and expression of p65 subunit and ameliorated inflammation and cell death (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: rAAV9-mediated R65 ribozyme gene transfection in cultured HUVECs effectively inhibits ox-LDL induced activation of NF-κB and production of inflammatory cytokines and prevents cell apoptosis.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the expression of NIMA-related kinase NEK2 and evaluate its clinical value in colon cancer. Method: Sixty specimens of colon cancer, 30 specimens of paracancerous colon tissues and 10 specimens of normal colon tissues conventionally resected in surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University from February 2006 to February 2014 were collected. These tissues were detected for the expression of Nek2 using Western Blot and immunohistochemical staining. The relationship between Nek2 protein expression and the clinicopathology and prognosis of colon tissues was discussed. Results: The expression level and positive expression rate of Nek2 protein in the colon cancer were obviously higher than that in the paracancerous tissues and normal colon tissues. They were also significantly higher in the paracancerous tissues than in the normal tissues (P<0.05). Statistical analysis revealed that Nek2 protein expression was not obviously correlated with gender, age and tumor size, but obviously correlated with degree of differentiation (P=0.008), TNM staging (P=0.000), lymph node metastasis (P=0.022) and tumor invasion (P=0.011). With the plotting of Kaplan-Meier survival curve, it could be seen that Nek2 protein expression was not significantly correlated with survival (P=0.0048). High Nek2 protein expression may be an independent risk factor for colon cancer (HR=0.227, 95% CI 0.101-0.510). Conclusion: High Nek2 protein expression reflects the malignant behavior of colon cancer. Playing important roles in the occurrence of colon cancer, Nek2 protein expression has diagnostic and prognostic value in colon cancer.  相似文献

We conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between interleukin (IL)-10-592C/A, -819C/T and -1082A/G polymorphisms and susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy. A hospital-based case-control study was taken in our study. A total of 172 patients with proven type 2 diabetes mellitus and 344 controls were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University between March 2012 and October 2014. Genotyping of IL-10 -592C/A, -819C/T and -1082A/G polymorphisms was done by done by PCR-RFLP methods. By the χ2 test, the distributions of the GG, GA and AA genotypes in IL-10 -1082A/G were significantly different between patients with diabetic nephropathy and control subjects (χ2 = 8.09, P = 0.02). By conditional logistic regression analysis, we found that the AA genotype of IL-10 -1082A/G was associated with an elevated risk of diabetic nephropathy compared to the GG genotype in codominant model, and the adjusted OR (95% CI) was 2.38 (1.23-4.57). In dominant model, the GA+AA genotype was associated with a significantly increased risk of diabetic nephropathy compared to the GG genotype in dominant model (OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.05-2.16). In recessive model, the AA genotype could influence the susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy when compared with the GG+GA in recessive model (OR = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.12-3.85). In conclusion, we suggested that IL-10 -1082A/G gene polymorphism was correlated with development of diabetic nephropathy, but no association was observed between IL-10 -819T/C and -592A/C and risk of diabetic nephropathy.  相似文献

Aim: To investigate the expression of CCAAT enhancer binding protein-α (C/EBP-α) in normal human liver and liver fibrosis and its probable association with autophagy. Methods: Double label immunohistochemistry was used to detect the location of C/EBP-α in hepatocytes and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). The expression of C/EBP-α, Atg5, and Atg6 was also evaluated by immunohistochemistry in paraffin sections of human liver. HSC-T6 cells were treated with rapamycin and 3-methyladenine (3MA) to induce or inhibit autophagy, and the expression of C/EBP-α protein was detected by Western blotting. Results: Double label immunohistochemistry showed that C/EBP-α was predominantly located in hepatocytes and that its expression was significantly decreased in fibrosis compared with normal liver. Atg5 expression was increased in fibrosis but was located primarily in liver septa and peri-vascular areas, which was consistent with the distribution of HSCs. In contrast, Atg6 was not expressed in normal or fibrotic liver. Treatment of HSC-T6 cells in culture with rapamycin or 3MA decreased or increased C/EBP-α expression, respectively, as shown by Western blotting. Conclusion: C/EBP-α was primarily expressed in hepatocytes in normal liver, but its expression decreased significantly in liver fibrosis. Autophagy might play a role in liver fibrosis through its association with C/EBP-α, but this hypothesis warrants further investigation.  相似文献
