ABSTRACT – Deposits of immunoglobnlins were demonstrated at the basement membrane zone in oral lesions in 10 out of 11 patients with lupus erythematosus (LE), and in normal oral mucosa in one out of six patients with LE by means of an imniunofluorescence staining technique. The reported findings are in accordance with the findings in skin biopsies from cutaneous LE lesions. In cases of LE, difficult to diagnose clinically and histopathologically, the imniunofluorescence staining technique may be of value as a supplementary diagnostic tool. 相似文献

Abstract – A Double-blind clinical trial with cross-over was conducted for a period of 12 months in 25 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). The effect of the amyloglucosidase and glucoseoxidase containing Zendium toothpaste on the discomfort, number of exacerbations, duration of exacerbation, number of ulcers and number of days with pain caused by RAS was studied. The use of Zendium significantly reduced the sensation of discomfort from RAS as compared to the use of placebo toothpaste (0.025>p>0.01). However, the patients were unable to discriminate significantly between Zendium and placebo when asked to choose one of the toothpastes (0.10>p>0.05) and no significant differences were demonstrated as far as the above mentioned parameters of disease serverity were concerned. Therefore, it is concluded that the reducing effect of Zendium containing amyloglucosidase and glucoseoxidase on RAS is weak as compared to a similar toothpaste without these enzymes. 相似文献

Background
The pathogenesis of HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection is poorly understood. We examined markers of oxidative stress, plasma antioxidants and liver disease in HIV/HCV‐coinfected and HIV‐monoinfected adults.Methods
Demographics, medical history, and proof of infection with HIV, hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV were obtained. HIV viral load, CD4 cell count, complete blood count (CBC), complete metabolic panel, lipid profile, and plasma concentrations of zinc, selenium, and vitamins A and E were determined. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase concentrations were obtained as measures of oxidative stress. Aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI) and fibrosis index (FIB‐4) markers were calculated.Results
Significant differences were found between HIV/HCV‐coinfected and HIV‐monoinfected participants in levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (mean±standard deviation: 51.4±50.6 vs. 31.9±43.1 U/L, respectively; P=0.014), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (56.2±40.9 vs. 34.4±30.2 U/L; P<0.001), APRI (0.52±0.37 vs. 0.255±0.145; P=0.0001), FIB‐4 (1.64±.0.91 vs. 1.03±0.11; P=0.0015) and plasma albumin (3.74±0.65 vs. 3.94±0.52 g/dL; P=0.038). There were no significant differences in CD4 cell count, HIV viral load or antiretroviral therapy (ART) between groups. Mean MDA was significantly higher (1.897±0.835 vs. 1.344± 0.223 nmol/mL, respectively; P=0.006) and plasma antioxidant concentrations were significantly lower [vitamin A, 39.5 ± 14.1 vs. 52.4±16.2 μg/dL, respectively (P=0.0004); vitamin E, 8.29±2.1 vs. 9.89±4.5 μg/mL (P=0.043); zinc, 0.61±0.14 vs. 0.67±0.15 mg/L (P=0.016)] in the HIV/HCV‐coinfected participants than in the HIV‐monoinfected participants, and these differences remained significant after adjusting for age, gender, CD4 cell count, HIV viral load, injecting drug use and race. There were no significant differences in glutathione peroxidase concentration, selenium concentration, body mass index (BMI), alcohol use or tobacco use between groups. Glutathione peroxidase concentration significantly increased as liver disease advanced, as measured by APRI (β=0.00118; P=0.0082) and FIB‐4 (β=0.0029; P=0.0177). Vitamin A concentration significantly decreased (β=?0.00581; P=0.0417) as APRI increased.Conclusion
HIV/HCV coinfection is associated with increased oxidative stress and decreased plasma antioxidant concentrations compared with HIV monoinfection. Research is needed to determine whether antioxidant supplementation delays liver disease in HIV/HCV coinfection.34.

AIM: To assess the use of capecitabine-based therapy and associated complication rates in patients with gastroesophageal cancer (GEC) in a real-world treat- ment setting. METHODS: Patients with claims between 2004 and 2005 were identified from the Thomson Reuters MarketScan databases. Capecitabine regimens were compared with 5-fluorouracU (5-FU) and other chemotherapy regimens, and were stratified by treatment setting. RESULTS: We identified 1013 patients with GEC: approximately half had treatment initiated with a 5-FU regimen, whereas 11% had therapy initiated with a capecitabine regimen. The mean capecitabine dose overall was 2382 ± 1118 mg/d, and capecitabine was used as monotherapy more often than in combination. Overall, 5-FU regimens were the most common treat- ment option in neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings, while other non-capecitabine regimens were used more widely in first- and second-line settings. The overall unadjusted complication rate for capecitabine regimens was about half of that seen with 5-FU regimens. In multivariate analyses, capecitabine recipients had a 51% (95% CI: 26%-81%) lower risk of developing any complication than 5-FU recipients did. The risk of developing bone marrow, constitutional, gastrointestinal tract, infectious, or skin complications was lower with capecitabine therapy than with 5-FU.CONCLUSION: Capecitabine appeared to have a favorable side effect profile compared with 5-FU, which indicates that it may be a treatment option for GEC. 相似文献

The biological profile of naratriptan (N-methyl-3-(1-methyl-4-piperidinyl)-1H-indole-5-ethane-sulphona-mide), a novel 5HT1B/1D receptor agonist, was investigated in a variety of experimental models of relevance to migraine. Naratriptan has high affinity for human recombinant 5HT1B and 5HT1D receptors (pKi = 8.70.03 and 8.30.1, respectively) and causes contractions of dog isolated basilar and middle cerebral artery (EC50 values of 0.11 and 0.07 M, respectively). Naratriptan causes small contractions of human isolated coronary arteries (EC50 value of 0.17 M; maximum contraction equivalent to 33% of 5HT maximum). In anaesthetized dogs, naratriptan causes selective vasoconstriction of the carotid arterial bed (CD50 dose = 193 g kg−1 ) and, in anaesthetized rats, naratriptan selectively inhibits neurogenic plasma protein extravasation in the dura (ID50 = 4.1 g kg−1 ). In a variety of antinociceptive tests, naratriptan has no effect even at high doses. In conscious rats and dogs, naratriptan has high oral bioavailability (71% and 95%, respectively). The data show that naratriptan is a selective agonist at 5HT1B/1D receptors, with a pharmacological profile very similar to that of sumatriptan, albeit 2-3 fold more potent. These observations, coupled with high oral bioavailability in animals, suggest that naratriptan has the profile of an orally effective anti-migraine drug. 相似文献

Elastic recoil of the vessel wall is a common cause of failure of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in renal arteries. To oppose such recoil, balloon-expandable metal stents were implanted in artificially stenotic renal arteries in pigs and normal renal arteries in dogs and pigs. The stents were then examined angiographically and histologically at regular intervals. All stents were completely covered with endothelialized neointima in 3 weeks. There was no difference in intimal thickness between the stenotic and nonstenotic renal arteries. A large stent diameter and a large open or nonmetal surface may cause less intimal hyperplasia, but nonturbulent, fast arterial flow is probably the most important factor in ensuring long-term patency of the vessel. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare and characterize histopathologically the virulence of two bacterial strains in a naturally susceptible animal host. One of the strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 19660, routinely used in this laboratory, produces endopthalmitis and phthisis bulbi in C57BL/6 mice within 3-4 weeks. The other bacterial strain, a clinical isolate from a 70-year-old patient with Pseudomonas corneal infection was found to be less virulent in the patient and thus was examined for virulence in the susceptible mouse model. The strain also proved to be less virulent in the normally susceptible mouse when compared with ATCC 19660. In general, when comparing the histopathological response of the mice to the two bacterial strains, it was found that in contrast to ATCC 19660, fewer polymorphonuclear neutrophils migrated into the cornea at 24-72 h, endothelial and epithelial necrosis was delayed, few free bacteria were observed in the cornea and animals recovered corneal clarity by 21-25 days following infection. 相似文献
