Relations between handedness and interhemispheric processing in cognitive tasks were examined. Thirty six right-handers and thirty left-handers (familial and nonfamilial left-handers) were asked to add two numbers which were presented tachistoscopically. Two numbers were displayed either to one visual field, or one to the left and one to the right visual field simultaneously. In Experiment 1, the numbers were displayed in Arabic numerals, and in Experiment 2 one of the numbers was displayed in Kanji and one in Arabic numerals. The results of Experiment 1 showed a bilateral advantage, however no subject group difference was shown in the performance of the three (left unilateral, right unilateral, and bilateral) presentation conditions. Though familial left-handers showed a weaker tendency to different patterns than right and non-familial left-handers, the results of Experiment 2 were largely similar to those of Experiment 1. These findings suggest that interhemispheric processing may not differ between left- and right-handers.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Neovascularization is known to be one of the major characteristics of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Angiogenin (ANG), originally discovered in a human colon cancer cell line, is a liver-derived polypeptide that shows strong angiogenic activity in vivo. However, the role of ANG on the development of HCC remains unknown. The present study was designed to examine the implication of ANG in the neovascularization of human HCC. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Forty-one HCC patients who had undergone conventional celiac angiography were used in this study. ANG protein expression and microvessel density (MVD) in HCC specimens obtained by liver biopsy or surgical resection were examined by immunohistochemistry, and the levels were quantified by the KS-400 image analyzing system. ANG mRNA expression in liver tissues was evaluated by in situ hybridization. Serum ANG concentrations were measured by an ELISA. Survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization showed greater increments of ANG protein expression and mRNA expression, respectively, in HCC tissues than in the surrounding nontumorous tissues. MVD within tumorous tissues increased according to dedifferentiation of the histological grade of HCC, showing a significant correlation (r = 0.877, P = 0.0009) with ANG expression levels. Mean +/- SD serum ANG levels of healthy subjects and chronic hepatitis (CH) patients were 362.3 +/- 84.1 ng/ml and 331.9 +/- 133.8 ng/ml, respectively, with no significant difference. Serum ANG levels of liver cirrhosis patients (242.4 +/- 126.9 ng/ml) were lower than those of healthy subjects or CH patients and decreased as the fibrosis grade advanced. In HCC patients, despite the cirrhotic background, serum ANG levels increased as the tumor vascularity increased (197.8 +/- 64.9 ng/ml for hypovascular, 326.7 +/- 148.6 ng/ml for hypervascular, and 405.0 +/- 121.3 ng/ml for very hypervascular), in good accordance with histological grading, and significantly decreased (P = 0.015) after successful treatment with transcatheter arterial embolization or percutaneous ethanol injection. HCC patients were conventionally divided into two groups according to the serum level of ANG, those with values higher than the mean level (332.9 +/- 143.8 ng/ml) and those with values lower than the mean,; the 5-year survival rate of the latter group was determined to be significantly higher than that in the former group. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that ANG is one of the neovascularization defining factors of HCC. Thus, measuring serum ANG may assist in monitoring the disease, and targeting ANG may provide a new strategy for treating advanced HCC.  相似文献

Noninvasive imaging of tau aggregates with a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer is useful for the diagnosis and staging of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Recently, we found that benzimidazopyridine (BIP) is an attractive scaffold for developing PET and single photon computed emission tomography tracers targeting tau aggregates. In this study, we designed and synthesized five novel 18F-labeled compounds with various substituted groups or atoms at the 7-position of the BIP scaffold. In in vitro autoradiographic studies, all 18F-labeled BIP derivatives selectively bound to tau aggregates deposited in AD brain sections. On the other hand, the initial brain uptake of these compounds was affected by the type of substituted group or halogen atom introduced into the 7-position of the BIP scaffold. Among these compounds, [18F]Me-BIPF showed the highest brain uptake (6.79% ID/g at 2 min postinjection) and 2 min/60 min ratio (3.59). These results suggest that appropriate introduction of the substituted group or atom into the 7-position of the BIP scaffold may be effective for developing useful tau PET tracers.  相似文献

Osteoporosis prevention is an important public health goal. Bone turnover markers are clinically measured to assess bone strength. C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) is released when collagens degrade and serves as an indicator of bone resorption. Simple CTX immunoassays are now available. However, serum CTX (sCTX) reference ranges for Japanese women are lacking. Procollagen type I N-propeptide (intact P1NP) reflects osteoblast activity, serving as a marker of bone formation. Because sCTX and intact P1NP are clinically applied as bone turnover markers, we determined reference ranges for both sCTX and intact P1NP in healthy Japanese women. We collected 228 blood samples from healthy Japanese women aged 19–83 years, grouped by age and menopausal status. We measured sCTX and intact P1NP and examined their correlation. sCTX values differed significantly between the two consecutive decade groups encompassing 19–39 years of age, intact P1NP values between 20 and 30 s, between post-menopausal 50 and 60 s, and between pre-and post-menopausal women in their 50 s. The mean sCTX of 91 healthy pre-menopausal women was 0.255 (0.100–0.653) ng/mL, the intact P1NP in 90 women 33.2 (17.1–64.7) μg/L. Corresponding values for post-menopausal women were 0.345 (0.115–1.030) ng/mL and 41.6 (21.9–79.1) μg/L. sCTX correlated with intact P1NP. Bone resorption markers are measured to assess anti-resorption agents, bone formation markers to assess the effects of bone-forming agents. The sCTX and intact P1NP reference values determined herein, in healthy Japanese women, are expected to be useful for osteoporosis treatment, assessment of fracture risk, and other clinical applications.  相似文献

Determining the factors associated with NCCLs and DH in populations could guide the implementation of specific preventive measures. This study evaluated the clinical features and factors associated with non‐carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in a Brazilian population. The participants were 118 patients at the Dentistry Clinic of our dental school. They completed an interview to obtain personal information and determine the possible factors associated with NCCLs and DH. Clinical examination was undertaken to record the NCCLs, shape of the lesion and certain occlusal factors. DH was diagnosed by air and probe tests. Data were analysed with the multilevel Poisson regression and prevalence ratios, and the respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The prevalence of NCCLs and DH among patients was 67·8% and 51·7%, respectively. Of a total number of 2902 teeth examined, 9·65% had NCCLs and 5·82% were sensitive to air. The most affected teeth for both conditions were the premolars. Most of the NCCLs were wedge‐shaped and located in the maxilla. The factors associated with NCCLs and DH were age and presence of premature occlusal contacts. NCCLs were also significantly associated with consumption of wine and alcoholic beverages, and DH with consumption of acidic fruits and juices. NCCLs were a common finding, with higher frequency in more advanced age groups, the maxilla and premolars. A significant association occurred between NCCLs, premature contacts and consumption of wine and alcoholic beverages. DH was associated with NCCLs, premature contacts and with the consumption of acidic fruits and juices.  相似文献

Nuclear factor (NF)‐κB essential modifier (NEMO), also known as IκB kinase subunit‐γ (IKKγ), is a pivotal molecule in the NF‐κB signaling pathway. Mutations of NEMO cause incontinentia pigmenti and X‐linked ectodermal dysplasia with immunodeficiency. Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial diseases (MSMD), which confers an almost selective predisposition to mycobacterial infection, is also caused by NEMO mutations. We herein report the first case of a patient with X‐linked recessive (XR) MSMD who developed cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, thyroid cancer and Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The relationship between NEMO mutation and oncogenesis is discussed.  相似文献
