The treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scar is challenging with no universally accepted mode for permanent ablation. Conventional therapies yield unpredictable results, significant complications and require elaborate hardware.

Objective

The objective was to establish the safety and efficacy of intralesional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for the treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars.

Study design

Randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Place and duration

It was conducted at the Jinnah Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Center/Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan from May 2012 to March 2013.

Subjects and methods

We included 120 patients divided in two groups. The group A patients received intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) and the group B patients received both 5-FU and TAC. 8 injections at a week interval were given and patients were evaluated at the start of treatment and then at 4th and at 8th week during the treatment and then 4 weeks after the end of treatment. Patents were assessed for mean reduction in scar height, efficacy and complications.

Results

Total of 108 patients completed the study. The mean reduction in the scar height in group B (5-FU + TAC) 1.144 + .4717 was markedly better than that of group A (TAC alone) 1.894 + 1.0751 (t = 4.781, p = .000). The efficacy (defined previously as >50% reduction in initial scar height) was superior in group B 44 (77.2%) than that of group A 25 (49.0% (X2 = 9.260, p = .002). Recurrence was seen in 39.2% (20) of patients of the group A while in only 17.5% (10) of the cases of group B (P = 0.012). Mean follow up was of 22 months.

Conclusion

5-FU + TAC is safe, easy to administer and effective treatment for problematic scars and has the lower rate of recurrence on larger follow up.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate the toxico-pathological effect of cadmium (Cd) and its amelioration with silymarin (SL) and milk thistle (MT) in male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). A total of 144 male quail were divided into nine equal groups (A–I). Experimental feeds were offered to these groups containing different combinations of Cd chloride (Cd1: 150 and Cd2: 300?mg/kg feed), SL (250?mg/kg of feed), and MT (10?g/kg of feed). The duration of the experiment was 60 days. The physical parameters studied included feed intake and body weight. Hematobiochemical parameters included total protein, albumin, ALT, AST, creatinine, urea, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique, and group means were compared by Duncan’s multiple range test. The body weight decreased significantly in Cd-treated groups while SL and MT ameliorated the toxic effects of Cd as compared to control group. The hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and hematocrit (Hct) values were decreased significantly in Cd2-treated group, while Hb and Hct decreased nonsignificantly in Cd1-treated group compared with control. Similar hematological findings were observed, when Cd was used in combinations with SL and MT. Urea, creatinine, and AST increased significantly, while ALT increased nonsignificantly in Cd-treated groups as compared to control group, while total protein, albumin, and globulin decreased significantly in Cd-treated groups as compared to control group. The SL and MT completely ameliorated these toxic effects at low dose of Cd; however, amelioration was partial at higher doses of Cd. These compounds (SL &; MT) might be used to ameliorate toxic effects of Cd in Japanese quail.  相似文献

Recently, nanosized metal-oxides have been extensively investigated for their ability to remove metal ions from aqueous media. However, the activity and capacity of these nanosized metal-oxides for removing metal ions decrease owing to their agglomeration in aqueous media. Herein, we synthesized a highly stable and magnetically separable rosin-biochar-coated (RBC) TiO2@C nanocomposite through a facile and environment-friendly wet chemical coating process, followed by a one-step heating route (pyrolysis) for efficient removal of Cr(vi) from aqueous solution. An array of techniques, namely, TEM, HRTEM, TEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR, VSM, BET and TGA, were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposite. The pyrolysis of rosin into biochar and the fabrication of Fe onto the RBC-TiO2@C nanocomposite were confirmed by FTIR and XRD examination, respectively. Moreover, TEM and HRTEM images and elemental mapping using TEM-EDS showed good dispersion of iron and carbon on the surface of the RBC-TiO2@C nanocomposite. Sorption of Cr(vi) ions on the surface of the RBC-TiO2@C nanocomposite was very fast and efficient, having a removal efficiency of ∼95% within the 1st minute of reaction. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis showed negative values of Gibb''s free energy at all five temperatures, indicating that the adsorption of Cr(vi) ions on the RBC-TiO2@C nanocomposite was favorable and spontaneous. Conclusively, our results indicate that the RBC-TiO2@C nanocomposite can be used for efficient removal of Cr(vi) from aqueous media due to its novel synthesis and extraordinary adsorption efficacy during a short time period.

In this study, 3D hierarchically self-assembled NiCo2O4 nanopins were synthesized by a morphology controlled hydrothermal method. Structure, morphology, and composition of the samples were investigated using FT-IR, XRD, EDS, and SEM methods. Electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) studies were done in a three-electrode system with 1.0 M Na2SO4 solution as the electrolyte for the supercapacitive study of the samples on a carbon paste electrode for the first time. The results confirmed the high-performance supercapacitive behavior of the dense nanostructure and acceptable stability during the charge–discharge cycle. The specific capacitance for the dense self-organized nanopins was calculated using a galvanostatic charge/discharge experiment which gave 2168 F g−1 at a current density of 5 A g−1.

Objective:To evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant potential of Emblica officinalis(E.officinalis)fruit on normal and type 2 diabetic rats.Methods:Type 2 diabetes was induced into the male Long-Evans rats.The rats were divided into nine groups including control groups receiving water,type 2 diabetic controls,type 2 diabetic rats treated with glibenclamide(T2GT)and type 2diabetic rats treated with aqueous extract of fruit pulp of E.officinalis.They were fed orally for8 weeks with a single feeding.Blood was collected by cutting the tail tip on 0 and 28 days and by decapitation on 56 day.Packed red blood cells and serum were used for evaluating different biochemical parameters.Results:Four weeks administration of aqueous extract of E.officinalis improved oral glucose tolerance in type 2 rats and after 8 weeks it caused significant(P0.007)reduction in fasting serum glucose level compared to 0 day.Triglycerides decreased by 14%but there was no significant change in serum ALT,creatinine,cholesterol and insulin level in any group.Furthermore,reduced erythrocyte malondialdehyde level showed no significant change(P0.07)but reduced glutathione content was found to be increased significantly(P0.05).Conclusions:The aqueous extract of E.officinalis has a promising antidiabetic and antioxidant properties and may be considered for further clinical studies in drug development.  相似文献
