We fabricated 3-dimensional scaffolds consisting of biodegradable poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA)(75/25) with hydroxyapatite particles containing atelocollagen (aAC). The aim of this study was to evaluate this new type of scaffold in regard to its basic properties and biocompatibility. Characterization of the obtained scaffolds was performed to know the porosity, shrinkage, diametral tensile strength, and biocompatibility. Composite scaffolds made of PLGA with hydroxyapatite particles containing atelocollagen (PL-aAC) showed a greater strength and stability than PLGA scaffolds. PL-aAC also exhibited superior performance in terms of cell attachment and proliferation as compared to PLGA, while histological findings showed that PL-aAC had an excellent response toward soft tissues. Our results strongly suggest that PL-aAC is more useful for cell transplantation as compared to PLGA for bone tissue engineering.  相似文献

Purpose

We attempted to identify the exact point of tumor eruption of a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP).

Methods

We morphologically classified 36 SFTPs into 5 categories. Type A showed a connection that included a bloodstream with the pleura on both sides. Type B only showed a connection that included a bloodstream with the visceral pleura, and had a non-bloodstream connection with the parietal pleura. Type C only showed a connection that included a bloodstream with the visceral pleura, and had no connection with the parietal pleura. Type D showed a non-bloodstream connection with the visceral pleura, and only showed a connection that included a bloodstream with the parietal pleura. Finally, type E had no connection with the visceral pleura, and only showed a connection that included a bloodstream with the parietal pleura. The clinicopathological profiles of the tumors were investigated according to their type.

Results

The distribution of the 36 SFTPs was as follows: A (19 %), B (6 %), C (67 %), D (0 %) and E (8 %). The tumors categorized as type A tended to be large in size.

Conclusions

SFTPs commonly arise from the visceral pleura and in accordance with tumor progression they will form a non-bloodstream connection with the parietal pleura. Finally, a vascular pedicle will arise with the parietal pleura.

The effects of acupuncture stimulation to the sacral segment on electroencephalograms (EEGs) and activity of locus coeruleus (LC) neurons were examined in urethane-anesthetized rats. In 71 of 112 trials, when EEGs displayed small amplitude and high frequency, stimulation to the sacral segment-induced large amplitude and slow EEGs with a latency of <450s and duration ranged from 32s to >42 min. Stimulus-induced EEGs comprised significant increases in delta power and significant decreases in theta and beta powers. After intraperitoneal administration of bicuculline, stimulation to the sacral segment failed to induce changes in EEG pattern. Firing rate of noradrenergic LC neurons decreased significantly from 2.9+/-1.5 to 1.1+/-0.8 Hz (n=11, p<0.001). Decreased neuronal activity exhibited close relationships with increased EEG amplitude. These results suggest that acupuncture stimulation to the sacral segment changes the state of animals from light anesthesia to deep anesthesia, and that this change is mediated by GABAergic systems suppressing the activity of noradrenergic LC neurons.  相似文献

The aim of this multi-center study was to explore the relationship between missing occlusal units and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in subjects with the shortened dental arches (SDAs). Subjects with SDAs were recruited consecutively for one month from six university-based prosthodontic clinics. In total, 115 SDA subjects participated (mean age, 58.5 +/- 10.0 yrs; 71% female). The location and number of missing teeth were examined and the number of missing occlusal units was calculated. To evaluate OHRQoL, the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-J) was administered and the summary score of OHIP-J was calculated. The SDA subjects were categorized depending upon the anterior-posterior lengths of the missing or remaining occlusal units. Regression analyses were performed to investigate 1) the association between missing OU and OHIP-J summary scores and 2) the OHIP-J differences between groups of subjects with various anterior-posterior SDA lengths. The first analyses revealed that one missing OU was significantly related to an increase of 2.1 OHIP-J units (95% CI: 0.6-3.5, P=0.016). The second analysis revealed that subjects who only lost the second molar contact exhibited significantly better OHRQoL than those who lost more teeth (Coefficient: 11.1, 95% CI: 2.8-19.2, P=0.02). Furthermore a statistically significant group difference was observed between the groups with and without the first molar occlusal contact (Coefficient: 12.8, 95% CI: 1.4 to 24.1, P=0.03). These results suggest that missing occlusal units are related to the OHRQoL impairment in subjects with SDAs. They also suggest that the patterns of missing occlusal units are likely to be related to the OHRQoL impairment in SDA subjects with the presence of first molar contact having an important role.  相似文献

A 61-year-old woman with typical atrial flutter underwent an electrophysiologic study and radiofrequency catheter ablation. The electroanatomic mapping revealed two contiguous lines of distinct double potentials (DPs) extending anteriorly/posteriorly from the coronary sinus ostium to the inferior vena cava (IVC) border. A large part of the anterior line of the DPs was close and parallel to the tricuspid annulus (TA). An initial discrete radiofrequency application at the very narrow preexisting isthmus between the TA and anterior line of the DPs completed the IVC-TA isthmus conduction block.  相似文献

Background

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is reported to be a risk factor for surgical site infection (SSI), which is a serious complication after spinal surgery. The effect of DM on SSI after instrumented spinal surgery remains to be clarified. The aim was to elucidate perioperative risk factors for infection at the surgical site after posterior thoracic and lumbar spinal arthrodesis with instrumentation in patients with DM.

Methods

Consecutive patients who underwent posterior instrumented thoracic and lumbar spinal arthrodesis during the years 2005–2011, who could be followed for at least 1 year after surgery, were included. These included 36 patients with DM (19 males and 17 females; mean age 64.3 years). The patients’ medical records were retrospectively reviewed to determine the SSI rate. The characteristics of the DM patients were examined in detail, including the levels of serum glucose and HbA1c, which indicate the level of diabetes control.

Results

Patients with DM had a higher rate of SSI (6 of 36 patients, 16.7 %) than patients without DM (10 of 309 patients, 3.2 %). Although the perioperative serum glucose level did not differ between DM patients that did or did not develop SSI, the preoperative HbA1c value was significantly higher in the patients who developed SSI (7.6 %) than in those who did not (6.9 %). SSI developed in 0.0 % of the patients with controlled diabetes (HbA1c <7.0 %) and in 35.3 % of the patients with uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c ≥7.0 %).

Conclusions

DM patients whose blood glucose levels were poorly controlled before surgery were at high risk for SSI. To prevent SSI in DM patients, we recommend lowering the HbA1c to <7.0 % before performing surgery.  相似文献

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a major form of brain injury among preterm infants, which is characterized by extensive loss and dysfunction of premyelinating oligodendrocytes (pre‐OLs) induced by hypoxia–ischemia (HI). Therapeutic hypothermia, which is a standard treatment for term infants with HI encephalopathy, is not indicated for preterm infants because its safety and effect have not been established. Here we investigate the effectiveness and mechanism of hypothermia for the inhibition of pre‐OLs damage in PVL. For in vivo studies, 6‐day‐old rats underwent left carotid artery ligation, followed by exposure to 6% oxygen for 1 hr under hypothermic or normothermic conditions. The loss of myelin basic protein (MBP) was inhibited by hypothermia. For in vitro studies, primary pre‐OLs cultures were subjected to oxygen–glucose deprivation (OGD) under normothermic or hypothermic conditions, and dorsal root ganglion neurons were subsequently added. Hypothermia inhibited apoptosis of pre‐OLs, and, despite specific downregulation of 21.5‐ and 17‐kDa MBP mRNA expression during hypothermia, recovery of the expression after OGD was superior compared with normothermia. OGD caused disarrangement of MBP distribution, decreased the levels of phosphorylated 21.5‐kDa MBP, and disturbed the capacity to contact with neurons, all of which were restored by hypothermia. Pharmacological inhibition of ERK1/2 phosphorylation with U0126 during and after OGD significantly reduced the protective effects of hypothermia on apoptosis and myelination, respectively. These data suggest that phosphorylated exon 2‐containing (21.5‐ and possibly 17‐kDa) MBP isoforms may play critical roles in myelination and that hypothermia attenuates apoptosis and preserves the contact between OLs and neurons via ERK1/2 phosphorylation. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
