Theoretical studies of mammalian cortex argue that efficient neural codes should be sparse. However, theoretical and experimental studies have used different definitions of the term "sparse" leading to three assumptions about the nature of sparse codes. First, codes that have high lifetime sparseness require few action potentials. Second, lifetime-sparse codes are also population-sparse. Third, neural codes are optimized to maximize lifetime sparseness. Here, we examine these assumptions in detail and test their validity in primate visual cortex. We show that lifetime and population sparseness are not necessarily correlated and that a code may have high lifetime sparseness regardless of how many action potentials it uses. We measure lifetime sparseness during presentation of natural images in three areas of macaque visual cortex, V1, V2, and V4. We find that lifetime sparseness does not increase across the visual hierarchy. This suggests that the neural code is not simply optimized to maximize lifetime sparseness. We also find that firing rates during a challenging visual task are higher than theoretical values based on metabolic limits and that responses in V1, V2, and V4 are well-described by exponential distributions. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that neurons are optimized to maximize information transmission subject to metabolic constraints on mean firing rate.  相似文献

Oral Diseases (2010) 16 , 136–145 Objective: The oral cavity forms an indispensable part of the human microbiome, for its unique and diverse microflora distributed within various niches. While majority of these organisms exhibit commensalism, shifts in bacterial community dynamics cause pathological changes within oral cavity and distant sites. The aim of this review was to appraise the current and emerging methods of detecting bacteria of the oral cavity paying particular attention to the cultivation independent methods. Design: Literature pertaining to cultivation based and cultivation independent methods of oral bacterial identification was reviewed. Methods: The specific advantages and disadvantages of cultivation based, microscopic, immunological and metagenomic identification methods were appraised. Results: Because of their fastidious and exacting growth requirements, cultivation based studies grossly underestimate the extent of bacterial diversity in these polymicrobial infections. Culture independent methods deemed more sensitive in identifying difficult to culture and novel bacterial species. Conclusion: Apart from characterizing potentially novel bacterial species, the nucleic acid sequence data analyzed using various bioinformatics protocols have revealed that there are in excess of 700 bacterial species inhabiting the mouth. Moreover, the latest pyrosequencing based methods have further broadened the extent of bacterial diversity in oral niches.  相似文献

Parent-child sexuality communication has been identified as a protective factor for adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including HIV infection. The available literature on this topic in sub-Saharan Africa is increasing; however a systematic review of studies has not been conducted. This article reviews the literature in the area of parental or caregiver and child communication about sexuality and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. A review of peer reviewed literature published between 1980 and April 2011 was conducted. Communication process studies investigating the frequency, content, style, tone of discussions, preferences, as well as associations with and barriers to sexuality communication are reviewed. In addition, studies which examine behavioral associations with parent-child sexuality communication, and intervention studies to improve parent-child sexuality communication are examined. The findings from process studies suggest wide variation in terms of frequency of discussions, with a range of socio-demographic and other factors associated with sexuality communication. Overall, findings demonstrate that discussions tend to be authoritarian and uni-directional, characterized by vague warnings rather than direct, open discussion. Moreover, parents and young people report a number of barriers to open dialogue, including lack of knowledge and skills, as well as cultural norms and taboos. Findings are less clear when it comes to associations between parental communication and adolescent sexual activity and contraception use. However, nascent indications from intervention research suggest positive findings with increases in frequency and comfort of discussions, among other outcomes. Gaps in the research are identified and discussed with implications for future studies.  相似文献

Epileptiform discharges and behavioral seizures may be the consequences of excess excitation associated with the neurotransmitter glutamate, or from inadequate inhibitory effects associated with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Synaptic effects of these neurotransmitters are terminated by the action of transporter proteins that remove amino acids from the synaptic cleft. Excitation initiated by the synaptic release of glutamate is attenuated by the action of glial transporters glutamate-aspartate transporter (GLAST) and glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1), and the neuronal transporter excitatory amino-acid carrier-1 (EAAC-1). GABA is removed from synaptic regions by the action of the transporters proteins GABA transporter-1 (GAT-1) and GABA transporter-3 (GAT-3). In this experiment, albino rats with chronic, spontaneous recurrent seizures induced by the amygdalar injection of FeCl3 were treated for 14 days with zonisamide (ZNS) (40 mg/kg, i.p.). Control animals underwent saline injection into the same amygdalar regions. Treatment control for both groups of intracerebrally injected animals was i.p. injection of equal volumes of saline. Western blotting was used to measure the quantity of glutamate and GABA transporters in hippocampus and frontal cortex. ZNS caused increase in the quantity of EAAC-1 protein in hippocampus and cortex and down regulation of the GABA transporter GAT-1. These changes occurred in both experimental and ZNS treated control animals. These data show that the molecular effect of ZNS, with up-regulation of EAAC-1 and decreased production of GABA transporters, should result in increased tissue and synaptic concentrations of GABA. Although many antiepileptic drugs have effects on ion channels when measured in vitro our study suggests that additional mechanisms of action may be operant. Molecular effects on regulation of transporter proteins may aid in understanding epileptogenesis and inform investigators about future design and development of drugs to treat epilepsy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPCs) are commonly collected and used to reconstitute hematopoiesis after high-dose chemotherapy. However, strategies for optimal collection and assessment of leukapheresis components are not standardized. STUDY DESIGN and METHODS: Hematopoietic progenitor cell assays were performed on 369 leukapheresis components collected from 95 patients who had received doxorubicin-based chemotherapy and/or granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Precollection patient hematologic values, leukapheresis collection values, component hematopoietic progenitor cell assays, and patient outcome measures were summarized. The kinetics of mononuclear cell (MNC) and PBPC mobilization were assessed among four patient groups. RESULTS: Patient group was a significant predictor of the peripheral blood MNC count on the day of collection (p<0.0001), and that value was a significant predictor of granulocyte-macrophage– colony-forming unit (CFU-GM) yield (p<0.0001). This relationship between the peripheral blood MNC count on the day of collection and CFU- GM yield differed according to patient group (p<0.0001). CFU-GM made up a larger fraction of peripheral blood MNCs collected from patients who received chemotherapy plus G-CSF than collected from those who received G-CSF alone. Moreover, the peripheral blood MNC count and the corresponding CFU-GM yield increased significantly on consecutive days of collection in patient groups receiving chemotherapy and G-CSF but were unchanged or decreased in patients receiving G-CSF alone. CONCLUSION: The relationship between peripheral blood MNC count and leukapheresis component CFU-GM yield differed significantly between patients who received chemotherapy and G-CSF and those who received G- CSF alone for the mobilization of PBPCs. Patient peripheral blood MNC count and component CFU-GM yield are useful for both assessing and suggesting revisions to PBPC mobilization and collection strategies.  相似文献

目的分析2005年1月~2011年12月在北京医院维持性血液透析死亡患者的病例特点和死亡原因。方法回顾性的检出维持血液透析大于3个月的死亡患者共83例,计算本中心从2005年起每年维持透析患者的死亡人数和死亡率;将死亡患者根据年龄分为3组,60岁以下中年组,60~79岁老年组和80岁以上高龄组,分析3组的人口学资料、有无糖尿病、透析龄和死亡原因等。结果从2005年起,北京医院每年维持透析患者的死亡率依次为11.00%,10.90%,8.30%。8.10%,10.10%,8.70%和6.34%;83例死亡患者中,男性49例,女性34例,平均年龄71.812.0岁(42岁~94)岁,中年组(小于60岁)14例,老年组(60~79)岁46例,高龄组(大于80)岁23例;3组患者在性别上无统计学差异。透析龄在中年组最长,平均77.2±73.0月,高龄组为44.0±35.5月,老年组透析龄最短,平均为33.2±28.1月;3组之间的差异有统计学意义。老年组患者糖尿病肾病居多;死亡原因在各组有明显的差别,中年组50%死于脑血管疾病,脑出血居多;高龄组56.50%死于感染中毒性休克。老年组死亡原因较复杂,死亡率超过10%的依次为感染中毒性休克、心肌梗死或心力衰竭、肿瘤、营养不良-炎症-动脉粥样硬化综合征(Malnutrition-inflammation-atherosclerosissyndrome,MIAsyndrome)和猝死。结论北京医院单中心血液透析死亡患者绝大多数为老年患者。年龄不是决定透析预后不良的主要危险因素,糖尿病是影响预后的重要因素,不同年龄组患者死亡原因不同,中年患者脑血管疾病多见,高龄患者感染中毒性休克常见,老年患者的死亡原因多样化,包括心脑血管疾病、感染、肿瘤和MIA综合征。±  相似文献

AIM: To assess the prevalence and location of advanced neoplasia in patients undergoing colonoscopy, and to compare the yield per indication. METHODS: In a multicenter colonoscopy survey (n = 18 hospitals) in the Amsterdam area (Northern Holland), data of all colonoscopies performed during a three month period in 2005 were analyzed. The location and the histological features of all colonic neoplasia were recorded. The prevalence and the distribution of advanced colorectal neoplasia and differences in yield between indication clusters were evaluated. Advanced neoplasm was defined as adenoma 〉 10 mm in size, with 〉 25% villous features or with high-grade dysplasia or cancer. RESULTS: A total of 4623 eligible patients underwent a total colonoscopy. The prevalence of advanced neoplasia was 13%, with 281 (6%) adenocarcinomas and 342 (7%) advanced adenomas. Sixty-seven percent and 33% of advanced neoplasia were located in the distal and proximal colon, respectively. Of all patients with right-sided advanced neoplasia (n = 228), 51% had a normal distal colon, whereas 27% had a synchronous distal adenoma. Ten percent of all colonoscopies were performed in asymptomatic patients, 7% of whom had advanced neoplasia. In the respective procedure indication clusters, the prevalence of rightsided advanced neoplasia ranged from 11%-57%. CONCLUSION: One out of every 7-8 colonoscopies yielded an advanced colorectal neoplasm. Colonoscopy is warranted for the evaluation of both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.  相似文献
