Characteristics of an intraoral cone for electron beam therapy with an 18 MeV linear accelerator

A 3.0 cm diameter X ray intraoral cone was attached to the end of a 4.0 cm × 4.0 cm electron beam applicator for an 18 MeV linear accelerator. The central axis depth dose, X ray contamination, field flatness, and isodose distributions were determined for this configuration at five electron beam energies with film, using ionization chamber measurements as a check on the dosimetry. These data indicated possible clinical advantages with the electron beam as compared to an X ray beam.     

Screw fixation of silicone implants

A simple and safe procedure for fixation of silicone prostheses is presented. Two screws ensure accurate location, helping to avoid displacement and probably reducing the incidence of bone damage.     

Metyrapone-induced cardiovascular degenerative changes in non-arteriosclerotic and arteriosclerotic rats

Virgin and breeder, male and female, Sprague-Dawley rats were unilaterally nephrectomized and given 1% saline drinking water. Animals were injected i.p., twice daily, with a 10 mg/100 g body wt dose of the 11-beta hydroxylation inhibitor, Metyrapone. After 7 weeks of treatment, both the previously nonarteriosclerotic virgin rats and the breeder rats with pre-existing arteriosclerosis developed de nove, widely distributed, intimal hyalinization of their peripheral arteries along with myocardial fibrosis and hyalinization of their intramyocardial coronary arteries. The Metyrapone-treated animals developed severe hypertension with greatly elevated serum creatin phosphokinase, glucose, BUN and cholesterol levels. The adrenal glands, hearts, and kidneys were greatly hypertrophied, in keeping with Metyrapone-induced extra ACTH release and the hypertension-induced myocardial and renal histopathology. Uniparous, Metyrapone-treated, female rats manifested an unusually high incidence of saccular aneurysms of the aorta. It is suggested that the hypertension and the intimal hyalinization and other specific morphologic characteristics of the cardiovascular degenerative changes observed were directly related to excess production of mineralocorticoids, e.g., deoxycorticosterone.     

Deleterious mechanical factors on skin flap survival

Summary In a comparative experimental work, the deleterious effect of tension, kinking and rotation, were studied using undelayed cutaneous cranially based dorsal flaps, in 105 albino-rats (sabra). The results showed a significant reduction in flap survival length. This is consistently diminished by kinking and rotation as compared to minimal changes produced by tension.The authors dedicate this paper to the dear memory of their teacher, the late Prof. Zvi Neuman, who passed away untimely on March 22, 1977     

A dynamic fixation of the base of the tongue to the mandible using de-epithelized tongue flap in the Pierre Robin Syndrome

Summary A 20-months-old infant who suffered from the Pierre Robin Syndrome and subsequently of right heart failure is presented. The baby was operated on successfully, fixing the base of the tongue to the mandible by means of a de-epithelized tongue muscle flap, simulating the course of the genioglossus muscle. Alternative traditional methods to deal with the problem are listed.The authors dedicate this paper to the dear memory of their teacher, the late Prof. Zvi Neuman, Former Head of the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, who died on March 22, 1977     

Morton neuroma: sonographic evaluation

One hundred consecutive patients with symptoms suggestive of Morton neuroma were examined with sonography, and 134 intermetatarsal masses were demonstrated. Forty-five patients underwent surgical exploration, which revealed Morton neuromas. The typical sonographic appearance is that of an ovoid, hypoechoic mass oriented parallel to the long axis of the metatarsals. Most masses were between the second and third or third and fourth metatarsals and seemed to produce symptoms when reaching a diameter of 5 mm.
