During 2008 to 2011, faecal samples, ear swabs, and ectoparasites obtained by full body search and total body comb were collected from 252 cats originating from the greater Tirana area. Faecal samples were examined using the McMaster and Baermann techniques, and a subset of 58 samples was tested for Giardia-specific antigen using a coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ear swabs were examined for the presence of parasitic mites. Overall, almost 93 % of the cats were identified harbouring one or more parasites: 59.1 % (95 % confidence interval (CI), 53.0–65.0) and 86.9 % (95 % CI, 82.7–91.1) of the cats tested positive for ecto- or endoparasites, respectively; 53.2 % of the cats had evidence for concomitant ectoparasite infestation and endoparasite infection. For ectoparasite infestation, prevalence was 52.0 % for total fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, 51.2 %; Ctenocephalides canis, 2.0 %; and Leptopsylla segnis, 0.4 %), 8.3 % each for Felicola subrostratus and Otodectes cynotis and 4.0 % for Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato. The most prevalent endoparasites were Toxocara ascarids (48.0 %), followed by Aelurostrongylus lungworms (39.7 %), Capillaria spp. (31.7 %), hookworms (32.9 %), dipylidiid cestodes (27.8 %), Cystoisospora spp. (23.4 %) and taeniid cestodes (2.0 %). One animal was found shedding Pseudamphistomum truncatum eggs. Giardia-specific antigen was detected in 29.3 % of the 58 cats tested. Mixed infections with up to six endoparasites concurrently (excluding Giardia) and mixed infestations with two or three species of ectoparasites were recorded in 73.1 and 22.8 % of the parasite-positive cats, respectively. Cats ≤9 months of age were more frequently tested (p?0.05) positive for Toxocara and Cystoisospora infections than cats >9 months while these cats tested more often (p?0.05) Aelurostrongylus-positive compared with the younger cats. The prevalence of infestation with ectoparasites did not differ between the cats of these two age groups. Given the impact that some of the parasites may have upon animal health as well as the zoonotic potential of some of them, measures should be taken to minimise the transmission of these parasites. 相似文献

Context: Age-appropriate reference ranges for thyroid hormones are required for detecting pediatric thyroid dysfunction. Data on thyroid hormones and peripheral thyroid metabolism in short children born small for gestational age (SGA) before and during GH treatment are lacking. Objectives: Our objectives were to obtain pediatric thyroid hormone reference ranges; to investigate thyroid hormones in short SGA children before puberty, during puberty, and during postponement of puberty by GnRH analog; and to evaluate thyroid hormones during GH treatment. Patients and Design: In 512 healthy children (225 females; 0-18 yr), free T(4) (FT(4)), TSH, total T(4), T(3), rT(3), and T(4)-binding globulin were determined. Reference ranges were calculated using the linearity, median, and skewness method. In 125 short SGA children (62 females; mean age 11.3 yr), thyroid hormones were analyzed before and after 2 yr of GH treatment and additional GnRH analog. Results: Thyroid references showed wide ranges postnatally and age-specific patterns thereafter, similar in boys and girls. Untreated short SGA children had similar FT(4) and T(4) levels as the reference population but significantly higher T(3), rT(3), and T(4)-binding globulin levels. During puberty and during GH treatment, FT(4) and rT(3) significantly decreased, whereas T(3) significantly increased. Conclusion: Age-specific thyroid reference ranges are presented. Puberty and GH treatment both induce changes in peripheral thyroid metabolism, resulting in more biologically active T(3) at the expense of less inactive rT(3), possibly mediated by IGF-I. GH treatment induces altered peripheral thyroid metabolism but does not result in thyroid dysfunction. 相似文献

High plasma concentrations of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, are associated with adverse outcome in critically ill patients. Asymmetric dimethylarginine is released within cells during proteolysis of methylated proteins and is either degraded by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) or exported to the circulation via cationic amino acid transporters. We aimed to establish the role of DDAH activity in the regulation of tissue and plasma concentrations of ADMA. In 33 critically ill rabbits, we measured DDAH activity in kidney, liver, heart, and skeletal muscle and related these values to concentrations of ADMA in these tissues and in the circulation. Both DDAH activity and ADMA concentration were highest in kidney and lowest in skeletal muscle, with intermediate values for liver and heart. Whereas ADMA content was significantly correlated between tissues (r = 0.40-0.78), DDAH activity was not. Significant inverse associations between DDAH activity and ADMA content were only observed in heart and liver. Plasma ADMA was significantly associated with ADMA in the liver (r = 0.41), but not in the other tissues. In a multivariable regression model, DDAH activities in muscle, kidney, and liver, but not in heart, were negatively associated with plasma ADMA concentration, together explaining approximately 50% of its variation. In critical illness, plasma ADMA poorly reflects intracellular ADMA. Furthermore, tissue DDAH activity is a stronger predictor of plasma ADMA than of intracellular ADMA, indicating that, compared with DDAH activity, generation of ADMA and cationic amino acid transporter-mediated exchange may be more important regulators of intracellular ADMA. 相似文献

Glycogen storage disease type 1b (GSD 1b) is caused by mutations in the Glucose-6-phosphate transporter and is characterized
by impaired glucose homeostasis. In addition, GSD-1b is associated with chronic neutropenia resulting in recurrent infections
and inflammatory bowel disease. It is unclear whether the neutropenia is solely due to enhanced apoptosis of mature neutrophils
or whether aberrant neutrophil development may also contribute. Here we demonstrate that hematopoietic progenitors from GSD-1b
patients are not impaired in their capacity to develop into mature neutrophils. However, optimal survival of neutrophil progenitors
from GSD-1b patients requires high glucose levels (> 200 mg dl−1), suggesting that even under normoglycemic conditions these cells are more prone to apoptosis. Furthermore, analysis of cytokine
levels in peripheral blood suggests an inflammatory state with an inverse correlation between the level of inflammation and
the number of neutrophils. Finally, in some patients, with low numbers of peripheral blood neutrophils, high numbers of neutrophils
were observed in the intestine. Together, these results suggest that the neutropenia observed in GSD-1b patients is not caused
by impaired maturation, but may be caused by both increased levels of apoptosis and egress of neutrophils from the blood to

Identifying factors that predict health-related quality of life (QOL) following hematopoietic SCT, is important in estimating patients' abilities to adjust to the consequences of their disease and treatment. As the studies that have been published on this subject are scattered, the present study aimed to systematically review prognostic factors for health-related QOL after auto- and allo-SCT in hematological malignancies. A systematic, computerized search in Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library was conducted from 2002 to June 2010. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using an adaptation of Hayden's criteria list. Qualitative data synthesis was performed to determine the strength of the scientific evidence. In all, 35 studies fulfilled the selection criteria. Strong-moderate evidence was found for GVHD, conditioning regimen, being female, younger age, receiving less social support and pre-transplant psychological distress as predictors of various aspects of health-related QOL following hematopoietic SCT. The results of this review may help transplant teams in selecting patients at risk for experiencing a diminished health-related QOL following hematopoietic SCT. A new venous disorder, chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), has been proposed in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). It is a vascular condition characterized by an impaired cerebrospinal venous drainage due to obstructions in the main extracranial cerebrovenous outflow routes (i.e. internal jugular veins [IJV] and/or azygos veins). In this review, the studies which assessed the prevalence of CCSVI in MS by echo colour Doppler (ECD) will be discussed. The technical aspects of determination of the five CCSVI criteria: (1) reflux in the IJV and/or vertebral veins in supine and upright position, (2) reflux in the deep cerebral veins, (3) high-resolution B-mode proximal IJV stenosis, (4) flow not Doppler detectable in IJVs and/or vertebral veins (VVs) and (5) reverted postural control of the main cerebrovenous outflow pathway are described in detail. We conclude that so far there are many studies with contradictory results, and as yet a strong scientific base to support the evidence for a causative relationship of CCSVI and MS is lacking. Recent studies call into question the validity of using ECD as a proper and reliable test for the diagnosis of CCSVI. One explanation for the variety in interpretation of the individual CCSVI criteria, with the wide-ranging percentages CCSVI, could be the different methods by using ECD to determine various criteria. 相似文献
