The objective of this study was to compare the morphological and chemical composition of bone graft (BG) and coral graft (CG) as well as their osteogenic differentiation potential using rabbit mesenchymal stem cells (rMSCs) in vitro. SEM analysis of BG and CG revealed that the pores in these grafts were interconnected, and their micro-CT confirmed pore sizes in the range of 107-315 µm and 103-514 µm with a total porosity of 92% and 94%, respectively. EDS analysis indicated that the level of calcium in CG was relatively higher than that in BG. FTIR of BG and CG confirmed the presence of functional groups corresponding to carbonyl, aromatic, alkyl, and alkane groups. XRD results revealed that the phase content of the inorganic layer comprised highly crystalline form of calcium carbonate and carbon. Atomic force microscopy analysis showed CG had better surface roughness compared to BG. In addition, significantly higher levels of osteogenic differentiation markers, namely, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Osteocalcin (OC) levels, and Osteonectin and Runx2, Integrin gene expression were detected in the CG cultures, when compared with those in the BG cultures. Periodontal bio‐repositories, which allow banking of clinically validated human data and biological samples, provide an opportunity to derive biomarkers for periodontal diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic activities which are expected to improve patient management. This article presents the establishing of the Malaysian Periodontal Database and Biobank System (MPDBS) which was initiated in 2011 with the aim to facilitate periodontal research. Partnerships were established with collaborating centres. Policies on specimen access, authorship and acknowledgement policies were agreed upon by all participating centres before the initiation of the periodontal biobank. Ethical approval for the collection of samples and data were obtained from institutional ethics review boards. A broad‐based approach for informed consent was used, which covered areas related to quality of life impacts, genetics and molecular aspects of periodontal disease. Sample collection and processing was performed using a standardized protocol. Biobanking resources such as equipment and freezers were shared with the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database and Tissue Bank System (MOCDTBS). In the development of the MPDBS, challenges that were previously faced by the MOCDTBS were considered. Future challenges in terms of ethical and legal issues will be faced when international collaborations necessitate the transportation of specimens across borders. 相似文献

Bone pain, especially back pain, is a common presenting feature of myeloma patients. We report three multiple myeloma patients with exacerbations of back pain and referred shoulder pain resulting from vertebral infections. Two patients were treated with surgery, and one patient had computerized tomography-guided percutaneous needle aspiration for diagnostic purposes. All three patients received a prolonged course of antibiotics. Vertebral infection resolved with this treatment in all three patients without any recurrence. Previous dexamethasone therapy, together with an episode of bacteraemia, appears to be a predisposing factor for vertebral infection. We review the cardiovascular and renal outcomes and safety of newer anti-diabetic medications in high-risk patients. We examine the outcomes of the IRIS, EMPA-REG OUTCOME, CANVAS, LEADER, SAVOR-TIMI 53, and EXAMINE trials demonstrating the cardiovascular and renal benefits of thiazolidinediones, SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists, and DPP-4 inhibitors.Recent Findings
Diabetes mellitus is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease with rising prevalence and disease burden. The microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes are well-recognized and include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Newer diabetes medications have demonstrated significant cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, renal, and mortality benefits in high risk patients with diabetes. In addition to their glucose-lowering effects, the thiazolidinedione pioglitazone, SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonist, and DPP-4 inhibitors have demonstrated significant cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, renal, and mortality effects.Summary
The outcomes and safety data of newer diabetes medications from recent trials demonstrate cardiovascular and mortality effects with significant implications for clinical practice.69.

In the United States, Spanish-speaking patients with diabetes often receive inadequate dietary counseling. Providing language and culture-concordant dietary counseling on an ongoing basis is critical to diabetes self-care. To determine if automated telephone nutrition support (ATNS) counseling could help patients improve glycemic control by duplicating a successful pilot in Mexico in a Spanish-speaking population in Oakland, California. A prospective randomized open-label trial with blinded endpoint assessment (PROBE) was performed. The participants were seventy-five adult patients with diabetes receiving care at a federally qualified health center in Oakland, California. ATNS, a computerized system that dialed patients on their phones, prompted them in Spanish to enter (via keypad) portions consumed in the prior 24 hours of various cultural-specific dietary items, and then provided dietary feedback based on proportion of high versus low glycemic index foods consumed. The control group received the same ATNS phone calls 14 weeks after enrollment. The primary outcome was hemoglobin A1c % (A1c) 12 weeks following enrollment. Participants had no significant improvement in A1c (–0.3% in the control arm, –0.1% in the intervention arm, P = .41 for any difference) or any secondary parameters.
