Rheo-optical Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze the orientational behavior of hard and soft segments of thermoplastic poly(ether urethane)s (TPU-Et) and poly(ester urethane)s (TPU-Es) and their blends with a 20 mass-% contribution of either polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene with an amorphous rubber phase (PP). The blends show a reduced stress level, lower elongation-to-break and a lower degree of orientation of the segments — especially for the TPU-Es blends — compared to those of pure TPU's when uniaxially elongated. Blends of TPU-Et with PP show reduced stress but increased strain compared to pure films of TPU-Et. This is caused by an improved adhesion of the rubber phase in the polypropylene and the polyether phase of TPU-Et. Optical micrographs visualize deformed polyolefin particles in elongated films of TPU-Et/PP blends. In the TPU-Et/PP blend we could achieve equivalent orientation for the polyolefin phase and the segments of TPU-Et caused by this higher phase adhesion compared to the other blends. Orientation functions (OF's) of absorption bands which specifically represent hard or soft polyurethane segments or which are characteristic of the polyolefin phase have been calculated to monitor the molecular alignment due to the mechanical treatment. 相似文献
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of unilateral versus bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation on quantitative measures of walking and reaching in Parkinson's disease (PD). We used kinematic measures and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor subscale (subscale III) to evaluate the movement of 6 people with PD who had bilateral STN stimulators implanted for at least 6 months and withheld their anti-parkinson medication for at least 8 hours. Subjects were studied with both stimulators off, one on, and both on. Kinematic data were collected as subjects walked, reached to a target, and were rated using the UPDRS motor subscale. STN stimulation improved walking speed and stride length, with the greatest benefit from bilateral stimulation. Reaching speed was improved by unilateral STN stimulation alone, with no additive effect of bilateral stimulation. UPDRS motor subscale ratings paralleled the kinematic findings. STN stimulation did not restore PD subjects' movements to the level of age-matched controls. Overall, these results provide further evidence that the basal ganglia pathways involved in control of walking and reaching may be distinct. We speculate that basal ganglia may influence walking through bilateral pedunculopontine projections and reaching through ipsilateral thalamocortical projections. Our findings also suggest that maximal improvement of walking requires bilateral rather than unilateral STN stimulation. 相似文献
Background: Percutaneous cricothyroidotomy is a lifesaving procedure for airway obstruction in trauma victims who need airway establishment and cannot be intubated or in whom intubation has failed.
Methods: The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a training effect using Seldinger technique emergency cricothyroidotomy (group 1; Arndt Emergency Cricothyroidotomy Catheter Set; Cook Critical Care, Bloomington, IN) versus standard surgical cricothyroidotomy (group 2). Twenty emergency physicians performed five cricothyroidotomies with each method in a total of 200 human cadavers, comparing efficacy and safety (speed, success rate, and injuries).
Results: Seven attempts in group 1 and six in group 2 had to be aborted. Time intervals from the start of the procedure to location of the cricothyroid membrane were not significantly different between the groups. However, time to tracheal puncture (P < 0.01) and time to first ventilation (P < 0.001) were significantly longer in group 2. No time effect could be observed in both groups. The airway was accurately placed into the trachea through the cricothyroid membrane in 88.2% (82 of 93) of the cadavers in group 1 and in 84.0% (79 of 94) in group 2 (not significant). No injuries were observed in group 1, whereas there were six punctures of the thyroid vessels in group 2 (P < 0.05). 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that decorin and biglycan account for over 70% of the proteoglycans (PGs) synthesized by human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs). Since these PGs are involved in the control of cell growth, cell differentiation, and matrix assembly, we investigated their turnover in cultured HPMCs. METHODS: Confluent HPMCs were metabolically labeled with [35S]-sulfate and the labeled products isolated from the cell medium and the cell layer characterized by sensitivity to bacterial eliminases. Experiments were undertaken with exogenous labeled decorin, and its metabolic state was studied. RESULTS: In a 24-hour labeling period, 75% of the newly synthesized chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) PGs appeared in the culture medium, the majority of which (90%) was decorin. In the cell layer, protein-free glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains accounted for 21% of the total CS/DS at 24 hours and exhibited constant specific activity at 12-16 hours. The latter material was turned over with a half-life of approximately 2.5 hours. Exogenous decorin underwent receptor-mediated endocytosis and subsequent intracellular degradation. Uptake but not degradation could be inhibited by heparin. CONCLUSIONS: HPMCs are distinguished by a rapid turnover of decorin. A characteristic metabolic feature is the existence of a large intracellular pool of protein-free DS-GAGs. Understanding the control of decorin turnover in HPMCs might lead to delineation of its potential role in both the physiology and pathophysiology of the membrane in PD patients. 相似文献
PURPOSE: Amiodarone (AMIO), a widely used anti-arrhythmic drug, has been shown to reduce the incidence of atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery and also to exert immunomodulatory actions in vitro and proinflammatory effects in vivo. The present study investigated the immunomodulatory properties of AMIO in the inflammatory response induced by cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 20 patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass graft were randomized to receive placebo or AMIO 600 mg day(-1) orally for seven days before surgery and 45 mg hr(-1) intravenously for 48 hr postoperatively. Plasma levels of the proinflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen (FBG), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and the antiinflammatory marker IL-10, were compared before and after surgery. RESULTS: Ninety-six hours after start of surgery, plasma levels of FBG had more than doubled (2.2 +/- 0.5-fold increase, P < 0.0001). Overall, FBG formation was significantly increased in the AMIO group (P = 0.048). Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 secretion transiently increased four hours after start of surgery (6.6 +/- 4.5-fold increase) but rapidly declined thereafter, (P < 0.0001). There was a trend toward higher MCP-1 plasma concentrations in the AMIO group (P = 0.13). The plasma levels of CRP, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and Il-10 changed significantly over time, but were not altered by AMIO treatment. CONCLUSION: In the inflammatory response induced by cardiac surgery with CPB, our data suggest that AMIO treatment is associated with a selective trend toward proinflammatory actions. 相似文献
