BackgroundUpdated information on the vectorial capacity of vectors is required in each malarious areas as well in Iran and its neighboring countries such as Afghanistan. The aims of this study were to investigate the potential infection of about 800 specimens collected from malarious areas of Afghanistan and Iran, and to differentiate biological forms of Anopheles stephensi.MethodTwo molecular markers, 18S RNA gene subunit and AsteObp1 intron I, were used respectively for investigation Plasmodium infection and identifying the biological forms of An. stephensi.ResultsPlasmodium infection was detected in 4 pools of Afghanistan specimens, including An. stephensi, collected from Nangarhar. Individually examination showed infection in 5 An. stephensi (infection rate: 1.25), to P. falciparum (2), P. vivax (2) and a mix infection. Out of five infected specimens, three were intermediate forms and two were mysorensis. No infection was found in specimens collected from Iran (Chabahar County), probably due to the active malaria control program in south-east of Iran.ConclusionThe key role of An. stephensi, as a known Asian malaria vector, was re-emphasized in Afghanistan by the results achieved here. The fauna of vectors and the pattern of biological forms of An. stephensi are similar in both countries that urge regional investigations to provide evidence-based and applied data for decision-maker in malaria control.  相似文献

Genetic factors play an important role in women’s fertility and embryonic development and may also contribute to the efficacy of assisted reproduction techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of His447His and Pro12Ala peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) gene polymorphisms on oocytes and fertilization in women undergoing IVF. Follicular fluid and blood samples were obtained from 98 IVF patients referred to Tabriz Alzahra Hospital. Samples were analysed for fatty acid content by gas–liquid chromatography and for polymorphisms of the PPARγ gene using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism-based methods. Multiple regression analyses were used to test the independence of associations between the number of mature and fertilized oocytes as outcome variables and the polymorphisms of PPARγ gene. For both polymorphisms, fertilization ratio was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in carriers of the rare alleles than homozygous wild-type genotypes. The associations of His447His (P = 0.003) and Pro12Ala (P = 0.015) polymorphisms remained statistically significant in the multiple regression analyses. This study suggests that the two common gene polymorphisms of PPARγ may improve fertilization in vitro and, thus possibly, female fertility.  相似文献

Background

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease that contributes to increased oxidative stress. Gastric bypass surgery is the gold standard method in treating co-morbidities.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation between pro-oxidant antioxidant balance (PAB) as one measure of oxidative stress and glycolipid profile 6 months after gastric bypass surgery.

Setting

Imam Reza Hospital, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran.

Methods

Thirty-five morbidly obese patients with body mass index ≥35 kg/m2 with co-morbidities or ≤40 kg/m2 were randomly recruited. The PAB assay was used to estimate oxidative stress. Anthropometrics and glycolipid profile were collected at recruitment and 6 months after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 16 software.

Results

The study showed a significant postoperative reduction in serum PAB values compared with the baseline (P<.001). All anthropometric and several glycolipid parameters significantly reduced after surgery (P<.001), while serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was unaffected. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that postoperative PAB values were affected by gastric bypass surgery (F = 12.51, P = .001). Regression analysis demonstrated medication usage controlling co-morbidities (β^ = ?.6, P = .002) and fasting blood glucose (β^ = .41, P = .04) as independent factors in predicting PAB values 6 months after surgery.

Conclusions

Gastric bypass surgery can reduce PAB values in favor of antioxidants 6 months after the operation. Accordingly, fasting blood glucose after gastric bypass surgery can be an independent factor in predicting PAB values.  相似文献

Cerebral ischemia produces brain damage and related behavioral deficits such as memory. In this study, a rat model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion was used to determine whether saffron extract and crocin, which are potent antioxidants and free radical scavengers, can reduce vascular cognitive impairment. Male adult Wistar rats were administered different doses of an aqueous solution of crocin or hydroalcohol extract of saffron intraperitoneally (i.p.) 5 days after permanent occlusion of the common carotid arteries. Spatial learning and memory were assessed in training trials, 7–11 days after common carotid artery ligation using the Morris water maze. The results showed that the escape latency time was significantly reduced from 24.64 s in the control group to 8.77 and 10.47 s by crocin (25 mg/kg) and saffron extract (250 mg/kg). The traveled distance to find the platform was also changed from 772 cm in the control group to 251 and 294 cm in the crocin (25 mg/kg) and saffron extract (250 mg/kg) groups. The percentages of time spent in the target quadrant, in comparison with the control group (24.16%), increased to 34.25% in the crocin (25 mg/kg) and 34.85% in the saffron extract (250 mg/kg) group. This study suggests that saffron extract and crocin improve spatial cognitive abilities following chronic cerebral hypoperfusion and that these effects may be related to the antioxidant effects of these compounds. Objective: Despite numerous experimental studies in the literature, there are few clinical trials regarding the effect of date palm pollen (DPP) supplementation on sexual function improvement. In the present study, we sought to evaluate the impact of DPP on female sexual function in Iranian non-menopausal women. Methods: Between October 2019 and December 2019, health centers in the city of Khalkhal, volunteers meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited in randomized clinical trials. Sixty-eight women were randomly stratified and assigned to one of the two study groups: placebo group (n = 35) and palm pollen group (n = 35), and received a starch or palm pollen capsule (300 mg per day), respectively, for 35 d. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) instrument was used to assess female sexual function. Results: After DPP supplementation, the increase in desire, lubrication, and the overall score, was statistically significant compared to the placebo group (P = 0.002, P = 0.000, and P = 0.042; respectively); Whilst there was no significant differences in the remaining domains (arousal: P = 0.763; orgasm: P = 0.370; satisfaction: P =0.474; pain: P = 0.259). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the coitus and preintervention levels of desire (r = 0.298, P = 0.038), arousal (r = 0.328, P = 0.021), lubrication (r = 0.361, P = 0.011), orgasm (r = 0.320, P = 0.025), satisfaction (r = 0.327, P = 0.022), and overall scores (r = 0.338, P = 0.018). Conclusion: This study suggests that DPP (300 mg supplementation for 35 d), given to non-menopausal women, could improve the lubrication and desire domains of FSFI.  相似文献
