Vision conduction routes were examined in 75 patients with the syndrome of optic nerve partial atrophy by recording the visual evoked potentials, threshold of electric sensitivity emergence, critical frequency of phosphene disappearance, electroretino- and electroneurograms. The findings of these examinations correlated best of all with the clinical picture when visual evoked potentials (latency increase, decrease of the amplitude with atrophy augmentation, interhemispheric asymmetry in chiasmal and retro-chiasmal involvement) or the critical frequency of phosphene disappearance (reliably reduced if a disease was developing) were recorded. Introduction of electrodes with therapeutic and diagnostic purpose permitted assessment of optic nerve function from the electroneurogram amplitude and time parameters. 相似文献

A case of destructive ocular myiasis resulting in complete loss of the globe in two days time is documented. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of such a severe involvement in a healthy and non-compromised host. Mechanical removal and good local hygiene helped heal the wound. The larvae were isolated to be that of Chrysomyia bezziana (screwworm fly). This is possibly the first report of destructive ocular myiasis caused by Chrysomyia bezziana from the Indian subcontinent and the second in world literature. Infestation of human eyes with larvae of flies (myiasis) has been reported. Serious consequences of destructive myiasis are seen in emaciated and diseased patients. Only one report of total destruction of the globe by maggots of Chrysomyia bezziana exists in the literature. As in previous communications, the patient in this report had no predisposing factors both systemic and local. We here in document a case of orbital myiasis leading to rapid destruction of the globe within two days in a healthy and a non-compromised patient. 相似文献

Estrogen deficiency is a risk factor for osteoporosis and coronary artery disease. Osteoporosis can be evaluated by measuring
bone mineral density (BMD). Coronary atherosclerotic burden can be evaluated by measuring coronary calcium using electron
beam computed tomography (EBT) of the heart. We compared coronary calcium scores in 45 asymptomatic postmenopausal women with
normal and low BMD. BMD of the lumbar spine and proximal femur was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and coronary
calcium was measured quantitatively by EBT. Women were divided into control, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups based on
the T score of the lumbar spine. Women were similar in age, years since menopause, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).
BMD ± SD (g/cm2) of L1–L4 was 0.96 ± 0.11, 0.83 ± 0.03, and 0.73 ± 0.05, in control, osteopenia, and osteoporosis group, respectively. The
total coronary calcium score ± SD (relative units) was 41.9 ± 83.1, 115.1 ± 181.9, and 221.7 ± 355.4 for control, osteopenia,
and osteoporosis group, respectively; the score was significantly higher in the osteoporosis than in the control group. This
study provides initial data suggesting that women with osteoporosis may have a higher risk of developing coronary atherosclerosis. 相似文献

The duration of symptoms before diagnosis (lag time) was defined for 184 of 236 children diagnosed as having a malignancy at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh for the time period January 1982 until December 1990. The natural logarithm of the lag time was correlated with age, gender, diagnostic group, white cell count in acute leukaemia, clinical stage of disease in solid tumours, and event free survival. Age was significantly associated with lag time, older children presenting later. In the diagnostic groups, mean lag time ranged from 2.8 weeks in nephroblastoma to 13.3 weeks for brain tumours. Diagnostic group was predictive for lag time after adjustment for age, with for example, a significantly longer lag time for those with brain tumours. However lag time was not predictive of event free survival and it is likely that lag time has other major determinants. When compared with previous studies, there also appears to be a regional variation in lag time for diagnostic groups. It seems likely that this is a reflection of geographical difference in the structure of health systems and is therefore yet another important determinant. 相似文献

Truncation artifacts occur in MR imaging because Fourier transforms are used to process MR signal data. These artifacts may alter the intensity, shape, and anatomic detail of structures in the spine. Ring artifacts (Gibb phenomenon) occurring near highly contrasting interfaces represent but one manifestation of truncation artifacts visible on MR images. We review truncation phenomena by providing graphic and phantom models. Ways in which truncation artifacts alter the MR appearance of the spine are discussed. We found that truncation phenomena are reduced most effectively by using a 256 x 256 matrix whenever feasible. 相似文献

Prior to 1975, Stingy Run was a third-order tributary of Kyger Creek, which empties into the Ohio River at Mile 260 (Gallia County, Ohio). Both streams drained strip mine refuse areas and physicochemical measurements indicated acidicmine drainage conditions (e.g., low pH). A depauperate macroinvertebrate community, dominated by a few acid-tolerant taxa, was found in both streams and no fishes were collected. In 1974, Stingy Run was impounded to form a fly ash pond which contains fly ash sluiced from Ohio Power Company's General James M. Gavin coal-fired power plant. Physicochemical and biological sampling during 1975–1986 indicated marked changes in the aquatic ecology of Stingy Run between 1) pre-impoundment and post-impoundment conditions; and 2) effluent pH control treatments after impoundment. Fly ash discharge eliminated acidicmine drainage characteristics in Stingy Run and lower Kyger Creek. After impoundment, net spinning caddisflies and a few dipteran taxa dominated the Stingy Run benthic community, reflecting changes in functional niches likely due to improved habitat and greater food availability. Replacement of acid feed by CO2 injection for effluent pH control and changes in ash pond chemistry occurred concomitant with elimination of a substrate floc; increased species richness and densities of invertebrates were subsequently observed. In Stingy Run, species richness and diversity of fishes increased from 1983 to 1986, reflecting improved water quality and increased benthic production after impoundment. We have measured systolic and diastolic blood pressure and excretions of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in groups of about 50 8- and 9-year-old boys from 19 European centres using standardized methods for the measurement of blood pressure and collection of urine, and by carrying out all analyses in one laboratory. Weight, height, pulse rate and environmental temperature were also studied. Mean systolic blood pressure ranged from 91 to 105 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure from 51 to 66 mm Hg. Mean 24-h excretion of sodium was between 91 and 146 mmol/d, that of potassium between 29 and 60 mmol/d, that of calcium between 1.5 and 2.6 mmol/d and that of magnesium between 2.7 and 4.2 mmol/d. Mean sodium excretion tended to be lower and potassium excretion tended to be higher in the boys from the north-western parts of Europe. Relations between either systolic or diastolic blood pressure and electrolyte excretions were generally weak or absent. Most remarkable is that only the association between mean diastolic blood pressure and 24-h magnesium excretion (partial regression coefficient (b +/- s.e., -5.04 +/- 2.08 mm Hg/mmol/d) was statistically significant after adjusting for differences in creatinine excretion and environmental temperature. Mean systolic blood pressure was not significantly related with any of the variables measured. The partial regression coefficient (b +/- s.e.) for diastolic blood pressure on weight was 0.186 +/- 0.062 mm Hg/kg, on height 0.165 +/- 0.056 mm Hg/cm, on pulse rate 0.364 +/- 0.100 mm Hg/beats per min and on outside temperature -0.25 +/- 0.07 mm Hg/degrees C. 相似文献
