Cognitive and emotional processing in narratives of women abused by intimate partners

This study examined relationships between cognitive and emotional processing with changes in pain and depression among intimate partner violence survivors. Twenty-five women who wrote about their most traumatic experiences completed measures of pain and depressive symptoms before the first writing session and again 4 months following the last writing session. Reduced pain was significantly associated with less use of positive and negative emotion words. Relationships between cognitive and emotional aspects of writing with changes in depressive symptoms fell short of statistical significance. The results suggest that emotional processing in narrative writing predicts changes in pain in intimate partner violence survivors.     

Estimation of Cardiac Depressant Activity of Ten Medicinal Plant Extracts from Pakistan

Ten medicinal plants extracts were pharmacologically screened for their cardiac activity on isolated rabbit heart, and showed significant negative inotropic activity with negative chronotropic effects. In all cases alcohol dried extracts were used and reconstituted in either water or ethyl acetate for these tests. The plant extracts which produced cardiac depression were Cactus grandiflora , Carissa carandas Linn., Duranta repens Linn., Eclipta prostrata Roxb., Heliotropium ophioglossum , Prosopis glandulosa , Scheweinfurthia sphaerocarpa A. Br., Solanum surattense Burm. f., Tephrosia uniflora Pers., Nardostachys jatamansi Dc. (Syn. Valeriana jatamansi ).     

Epigenetic regulation of protein tyrosine phosphatases: potential molecular targets for cancer therapy

Promoter methylation-mediated silencing is a hallmark of many established tumor suppressor genes. This review focuses on the methylation and suppression of a receptor-type tyrosine phosphatase gene, PTPRO, in a variety of solid and liquid tumors. In addition, PTPRO exhibits many other characteristics of a bona fide tumor suppressor. Reactivation of genes silenced by methylation using inhibitors of DNA methyltransferases and histone deacetylases, and the potential application of PTPRO as a molecular target for cancer therapy have been discussed.     

Colonic perforations in enteric fever

We report a case of multiple colonic perforations in a 5-year-old boy due to typhoid fever. The main objective is to present the occurrence of this complication and discuss the management. The patient was admitted with nine days history of high-grade fever and abdominal pain. On examination, he was very sick looking child with acute abdomen. After initial workup and resuscitation, laparotomy was performed which revealed multiple colonic perforations with feacal peritonitis. The case revealed that one must not forget to inspect entire intestine including colon, as there may be perforations present in the large bowel.     

β-cyclodextrin complexes of celecoxib: Molecular-modeling, characterization, and dissolution studies

Celecoxib, a specific inhibitor of cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a poorly water-soluble nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with relatively low bioavailability. The effect of beta-cyclodextrin on the aqueous solubility and dissolution rate of celecoxib was investigated. The possibility of molecular arrangement of inclusion complexes of celecoxib and beta-cyclodextrin were studied using molecular modeling and structural designing. The results offer a better correlation in terms of orientation of celecoxib inside the cyclodextrin cavity. Phase-solubility profile indicated that the solubility of celecoxib was significantly increased in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin and was classified as AL-type, indicating the 1:1 stoichiometric inclusion complexes. Solid complexes prepared by freeze drying, evaporation, and kneading methods were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, powder x-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy. In vitro studies showed that the solubility and dissolution rate of celecoxib were significantly improved by complexation with beta-cyclodextrin with respect to the drug alone. In contrast, freeze-dried complexes showed higher dissolution rate than the other complexes.
